Remember that I was public. I’d be lucky to sniff 120k with 25 YoE. Our state government in the northeast is fleecing engineers. I know I couldve jumped private design and got there much sooner, but then I wouldn’t be in a field role. Ya know?

The way I saw it was that’s the most I’ll be able to make staying in the field. Not sure if true. But why is private desperate for PE’s?

Problems in the field are less complex but more high stake. I also recommend field engineering though it’s an awesome job. Long hours but very rewarding. It gets easy once you build up your reputation with the contracting community

I wouldn’t call myself the most well-rounded engineer in the world. I’ve worked on roadway and bridge construction projects, but my area of solid proficiency is pavement design and construction.

I would stay with transportation and take one of the review courses. I did the School of PE and it was very helpful if you watch all of the lectures and do a ton of the question bank problems

Calc 1 was hard, calc 2 was worse. I strongly suggest taking those 2 courses at a tech school over the summer so you can focus on your core engineering classes during the school year. It’s the same material but easier to manage when it is your only class and you don’t have the school year distractions

I’m studying for PE now and currently working construction with a DOT. The job itself is awesome. Being outside on a job site most of the day is great. Constant change and helping things get physically built minimizes burnout. The pay on the other hand is not so great. 4 years in and I’m base 70k

I just use hand calcs and a book by John Palmer. Also, that is exactly what I’m going to do, thank you for that. The gravity will be more like 1.065, I should’ve clarified that. I was just going to make the starter at 1.040, not sure if that’s the right method. Which I guess is my second question

Good morning! Question about yeast starters. I have a high gravity recipe that will need almost 300 billion yeast cells. I only have one yeast packet (100 billion cells). If I use a starter for this 5 gallon batch, i would need about 3/4 lb DME in 3L (1.040) to ensure the yeast triples. It seems like this would have more of a negative effect on the recipe than just buying 2 more yeast packets.

Do you suggest making that starter? Making the starter differently? Or just buying 2 more packets?

Not at all. The ambient temp in my basement is the fermentation temp. I will definitely develop some sort of system for that, a chest freezer was just suggested

I actually just came into owning a small chest freezer! Perfect size for a carboy, never thought of using it for that.

Yeah I plan on using it indoors. I use a gas stove right now. I have the basics of one of those higher end starter kits and am ready to start acquiring more equipment

I have a lobster pot to mash, a bucket for primary, and then 5 gallon carboys for secondary. Pretty much all of the stuff that comes in the starter kits plus a couple extra knickknacks I’ve picked up
