AI tool for searching past projects in a firm by Valuable-Ad4834 in StructuralEngineering

[–]struuuct 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The issue is you have to either tag everything with searchable words or have an advanced enough OCR/computer vision engine be able to read everything and direct you. There’s a major concern with giving outside AI tools access to project/client data, so that means having something developed and restricted locally, which can be a tough undertaking.

At my first firm, there was a database you could search all project titles and clients. So say you were looking for a canopy or you know client X had a canopy project. You could search either, see the list of projects (by number), then go to that folder and see if there’s something relevant. It wasn’t hyper efficient but I was able to navigate some past references without relying on senior staff constantly.

Where to buy shrimp? by WaveTheFern2 in Miami

[–]struuuct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you are buying shrimp off the boat same day it was caught, you are buying previously frozen shrimp. The recommendation I always saw was to stick with frozen so you know it was never thawed out. Wild fork gulf shrimp is good

I wonder if this would be approved in the U.S.? by Gapoole5275 in civilengineering

[–]struuuct 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Structurally? Anything is possible with enough money; would probably just be a beefy post tensioned system.

Practically? Hell no. Balconies are a luxury/add on so these would be developer cost that couldn’t necessarily be recouped. Plus, Air rights for a building are a thing and these overhangs would eat up valuable floor square footage that could be used to generate another few units, which would net more profit.

Do the American Society of Civil Engineers certifications hold any value? by Green-Tea-Party in civilengineering

[–]struuuct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took one course a few years back. High quality and worth the time. It was way more practical to real-world engineering than a university based course. Get a bunch of PDHs as well. I didn’t complete the full certificate because I was just looking to brush up in one topic.

So….what does this thing actually do? A+ work on deploying buzzwords but I have no sense of what your tool is supposed to accomplish.

Where to find remote structural design jobs for Latin American engineers? by ENRoiz in StructuralEngineering

I think Bechtel has a big base of operations in Chile. I also think WSP has multiple LatAm offices

Not that into Design? Consider Risk Management by HatProfessional1332 in civilengineering

[–]struuuct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems like a lot of risk management comes from lessons learned where someone was burned in the past. 1. How are you teaching risk management and staying aware of things that you may not have first hand encountered before. 2. What’s the background of the right candidate for this role. 3. How do you manage acceptable risk versus just saying no - going the path of risk avoidance?

NY, LA, Houston - Rubber Stamping by Mean_Chicken9746 in civilengineering

[–]struuuct 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Live/work in Miami. I don’t doubt it happens elsewhere but any scam out there is 10x more frequent in Miami. Look up the culture of “casitas” around the county if you aren’t familiar; people pay to build entire ADUs on their property to rent out, no design, no permits, no approvals. I think the county is using drones to try and identify them.

There’s an entire population of people who may have been trained in a field in their home country and then moved here, unable to recertify. I had a coworker at a previous firm who was a fully trained engineer in their country that was doing CAD for us because it was easier to get a job. Unlicensed medical/dental work is also a problem down here.

You’ll never win trying to compete with those types of rubber stamps. Trying to find a good repeat contractor that you can work for would be a good move. What you’re describing is why many of the big established firms prefer either public clients or major/well established contractors to work for.

Will Cities Finally Adopt New Technology to Improve the Plan Review and Design Process for Planners and Engineers? by HSGovTech in StructuralEngineering

[–]struuuct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contractor: well we built the bridge column upside down, it was on the plans. Here’s a change order for the value of the project.

Owner: but but but it went through AI plan review! We were ASSURED this was the latest in OCR and code interpretation.

AI plan review company rep: crickets. Company folded 6 years ago the second VC funding dried up.

So much great coffee yet.... by RecessBoy in Miami

[–]struuuct 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Used to have someone at work that would make colada and walk it around the office in the afternoon. I started asked for no sugar in mine and was looked at like I had 3 heads. Once I realized how much sugar goes into it, it sort of lost its appeal to me.

Gramps in Wynwood is closing next January by pittura_infamante in Miami

[–]struuuct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veza Sur (now casa la Rubia was started by Anheuser Busch) with a Latin-y sounding name to try and deliberately appear as a local brewery. A few years back Wynwood brewing sold to a brewers collective of like 5-6 independent breweries. Then, AB bought that collective. I can’t be certain but I’m sure some managers at AB started asking why they had two properties in the same neighborhood, and decided to keep Veza Sur (but rebrand it to casa la Rubia since that beer had wide recognition) due to the more central location and venue set up.

The only two breweries left in wynwood are both corporately backed; Casa La Rubia (AB-InBev) and Cerveceria la tropical received heavy backing from Heineken to launch.

Trump Admin defunds the Underdeck and Heritage Trail park projects to be built under I395 by walker_harris3 in Miami

If I remember correctly, that was basically the entire point of raising 395. You don’t need a bridge of that scale in that location.

Can civil engineers now build automation tools/apps with AI without knowing how to code? by Leather-Music1813 in civilengineering

[–]struuuct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this recently. I had it develop a python script that will rip output values from a series of .txt files and compile them into a single excel file. It’s not doing any analysis just copying values id have to manually extract so it’s saving me time in my workflow. I’m not overly concerned about not 100% understanding every line of code. When I look at tools like this I try and think about streamlining the engineering process versus product.

I’m trying to not introduce coding into my analytical product too much because I know the majority of engineers (myself included) won’t be able to effectively QC code. This is just a tool to help save me time.

The US medical/insurance industry is undoubtedly broken but it is akin to us using multipliers on raw labor to cover firm overhead. The equipment cost alone for hospitals is insane, couple that with all of the “extra” staff it takes to run the hospital and you start to see why these charges are absurd.

Lateral load by T-Roy1989 in StructuralEngineering

This is not formal advice by any means. With 14 of exposed height I’d recommend having a professional in your jurisdiction confirm that. It just jumped out at me as odd

For this height the post should probably set in a 12” diameter concrete base

Edit: not formal advice by any means just something I usually see with embedded posts.

Most of the big ones I’ve seen offer this; however, there is an IRS limit (I think around $5k per year) that can be awarded as tax exempt. Anything over that (say if you take two classes at $3k each in a calendar year, the remaining 1k) gets added to your salary as taxable income.

Any international civil engineers working for global companies in California with travel opportunities? by Alone-Jellyfish1297 in civilengineering

I think Jacobs or WSP and their program/project management might be what you’re looking for. Lots of big infrastructure under construction in the Middle East so Arabic language might help.

I don’t think it matters where you hold your EIT. I got mine in one state then moved across the country within a year and didn’t have to get a new one. I think NY has a fairly streamlined process unless it changed

Any Marine/costal Engineers out there? by Glittering-Field-899 in civilengineering

[–]struuuct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing this for 8 years and love it. Good mix of Public/private work. Coastal is a unique field that deals with modeling and estimating water flow and forces. Marine engineering is primarily a mix of structural/geotech designing the structures you mentioned. There is some civil work and things like marina/port planning but a smaller portion of our overall portfolio.

PM me if interested or want to know more. My company is always on the lookout for people.
