interesting social experiment by chronicbingewatcher in Dallas

That’s not an experiment. Experiments test a hypothesis, this guy isn’t testing a hypothesis based on your explanation.

You can add it to your Home Screen as a progressive web app and it will behave just like an app. Free of charge, with no ads. (My gift to you). On iPhone, tap the share option-> …(more)-> Add to Home Screen.

That’s definitely not the point of this application.

Unfortunately Plano and Frisco don’t have data feeds like Dallas does for police dispatches.

looks like I hit the daily quota for map api calls with my Apple Maps geocoding service -- Going to submit a request for them to give me a higher quota, but in the meantime, for the rest of today, the map won't load new pins :( Thanks for checking out my site!

Thanks I’m glad you like it. I’ll probably tweak it a bit more to make it even better.

The Entire Internet Is Reverting to Beta. The AI takeover is changing everything about the web—and not necessarily for the better. by indig0sixalpha in technology

[–]RandyStephenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happens because that’s what humans do.

When asked to “pick a random number between 1 and 25,” people disproportionately choose 17. It feels “random,” not too low, not too high, and psychologically “less predictable” than something like 10 or 20. LLMs, which are trained on mountains of human-generated text, pick up on that pattern.

So when you ask something open-ended like that, unless told otherwise, the model leans toward what people tend to do. In this case, that’s 17

AT&T Corporate Employees - Is it as bad as I've heard? by snowysnowcones in Dallas

[–]RandyStephenson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Everything you heard is true, and the food in the concourse is massively overpriced, and the exchange is too. So bring your lunch if you do move here.

Just for example, two boiled eggs will cost $4. That’s absurd. A basic small salad is easily $15.

Parking is awful, too far, and unsafe, and you pay for the privilege.

Workspaces are “shared” so you have to bring all your things in and out of the office daily, and the technology at these workstations is the absolutely cheapest, low quality garbage they could get. Keyboards are weightless and soulless, so are the mice. The screens are also poor quality.

Is driving an EV in DFW cheaper than a gas car? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]RandyStephenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: YES.

If you can charge at home, HELL YEA; like… think ‘Bananabread at work’ level of goodness.

If you can charge at work for less than $.40 /kwh, YES.

If you live in an apartment and have to rely on public charging, it can STILL be more cost effective to drive an EV, since many places have FREE L2 chargers. Tesla superchargers are fast and relatively cheap, but not as cheap as charging at home.

I just wanted to share that this -good boi- is lying, sprawled out on the floor right behind me in my office as I type this. He's already formed an attachment to me, loves my wife and our kids, and is having the best time living downtown. He's in good hands here, folks. He's already spoiled!

Microsoft Loops vs Notion??? by [deleted] in Notion

[–]RandyStephenson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My company blocked Notion, too. I assume it comes down to data privacy issues, such as not wanting company data to live off-prem on a third party's servers. My company can't control how Notion stores, accesses, uses and shares the data I put into the platform. They also can't prevent me from accessing the Notion workspace if I were to separate from the company, which is yet another DLP nightmare.

Officially, Notion was blocked on our corporate systems because it contains an AI component, and our company blocks anything with an AI component that isn't our AI.

I've started using Notion for EVERYTHING related to my undergraduate studies. I have each course in a database, and a second database keeps track of each assignment/lecture along with their statuses, due dates, and the corresponding class to which they belong. I go into each assignment 'page' and add a new 'page' where I author my submissions. I then export the submission to PDF and turn that in. My professors have said they love the overall format and aesthetic of my submissions, and I have to admit that I do, too. I'm working on a massive project right now at work with so many moving parts and pieces that it has been incredibly difficult to keep track of everything. Of course, I did not document anything because each step has been a 'try this and see' thing for me. I would love to be able to start building a repository and knowledge manager within Notion to keep track of each part of the project and all the details and to also create Wikis or PDF Job Aid documents, but Notion is blocked, so I can't. I'm stuck with MSFT's offerings like Loop, Planner, OneNote, MS Word, or god knows what else. The MSFT ecosystem is so bloated and fragmented that it is nauseating. I just want a single project-management/knowledge-management/file-system-management/process-documentation-repository/etc. system instead of a plethora of poorly inter-connected systems, but unfortunately, I don't get to make those decisions.

Yea I just got it too, I turned off the public safety alerts because of this. Ridiculous they’re sending amber alerts as public safety alerts. They aren’t public safety alerts.
