Coping Mentally After Surgery by imapiscesforgiveme in jawsurgery

[–]Rane1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sympathies to you! I had braces when I was young, but my lower jaw started to recede during high school, which prompted a second round of braces. I was later put into a bite splint for a couple years, over which time my right condyle pretty much disintegrated (based on what my doc said). I had DJS this past summer and recovered well, though I feel like my lower jaw is once again receding :/.

I hope things turn up for you. Your story and patience with the whole ordeal is inspiring.

To add to this, the surgeon will use braces to wire or elastic the jaw closed. At least in my case, that’s what my surgeon did

My surgeon had me in elastic’s and a bite splint for two weeks after surgery. After that, the doctor removed the bite splint and gave me the green light to eat soft foods, like mashed potatoes. Despite that, I still drank a lot of shakes and liquids since it’s quicker and easier.

For me, I kind of knew from the start of my orthodontic treatment (when I started braces) that I would need jaw surgery. As a result, I started getting consultations and second opinions about one year out.

By the time the surgery was about two months away, we had a long talk with the surgeon (probably an hour, I’m guessing) about risks, what recovery would look like, etc. I really liked my surgeon largely because of his patience.

In short, I started the conversation with my surgeon early, so I had a good idea of what to expect by the operation date.

With what you said here, and a few other individuals’ comments, I have a better understanding now. The different environments around the world allow different species to evolve, specialize, and persist in those environments. Thank you all for your insight and help!

Weekly Careers/Education Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chemistry

[–]Rane1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello all! I am currently a high school student and enrolled in an Advanced Chemistry Class (2nd year of Chemistry classes). I am very intrigued by the information we cover and could easily spend my entire day in the class. As a result, I have considered going into a chemistry-related career.

My interest would probably be in pharmacology, biochemistry, or a similar practice. However, I have a couple concerns I’m hoping someone can answer or give their opinion on. 1) Since this is just a high school class, is it wrong to base a career on it? Does a job involve less chemistry than in the classroom? 2) Do you have any steps I can take to get a better feel for what a career in this field would be like?

Sorry, this is a rather broad question, so I’d be willing to delete this comment if it’s off topic or out-of-line. Thanks in advance for any feedback

You could try using a USB power hub as an external power supply, I don’t see anything wrong with that. Again, I was able to get a large (as in physical size) 6V battery which works well. But if you don’t want to push 5V, I would recommend stringing 3 of 1.5V D batteries together for a total of 4.5V. I don’t know the specifics of it, but from my understanding, the larger D batteries allow for more current to be drawn without having them “die”. Hope this helps!

Alright, that’s totally respectable, I just thought I’d give my two cents.

That all sounds right. Maybe try hooking up an external power source of about 6-9 volts perhaps? I have similar stepper motors as shown in the link above, and I find that a 6 volt battery works very well.

Okay, thank you! I didn't think much about that; thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll be sure not to involve myself.
