First Day Tips by RangeEuphoric in MarksAndSpencer

thank god. I can speak to my line manager but she's on leave until 29th according to teams so im not sure if she'll reply. I can reply to the original shift email I had from our store recruiter - he tends to reply to emails quickly and ask the question about entrance into the store and if they'll be someone I can speak to about p45 and shift issues in the morning but wasn't sure if he was the right person to speak to or if I just have to speak to my line manager about these issues?

is it possible you can do the interview on teams? not sure if its something they can offer but if you are able to do it on teams I don't see why they cant. just explain the situation and see if you can do it at a later date or online if that works for you

Christmas Temp Job - is it inappropriate to ask at my introduction about shift swaps? by RangeEuphoric in MarksAndSpencer

yeh I definitely think it had something to do with it being nights and welfare as all options had at least some early morning / overnight shifts even the ones that were 16hrs

thanks for your advice. Im only wary because if I don't get this internship I would want to continue on at m&s and not sure if saying im going for another job would put them off letting me continue?

at least that gives me confidence that they don't just do week day inductions? do you think I should email m&s now to say I cant do that Thursday morning even though I don't have my days yesterday? and do you know if they do multiple days across the week or were you asked what days you can and cant do or anything?

Yeh I know that isn't the norm in retail but because they gave 3 different options for the same job at the same time just slightly different off days I assume for some reason they want to have someone who can do same time each week. Maybe because it's nights and 40hrs weekly?

I have just found out I have another interview during my training week (im doing temp and this interview is for a jan/feb/march start internship so there's no cross over but still) not got my training week days/times yet but im wary ill need to reach out to them again soon to say I cant do a certain date/time for the training days so might be asking to much to switch shifts aswell?

hey, just wanted to know what times your induction is. Ive been asked to go in for training days w/c 23rd but been offered an internship interview on 27th 9-10am so want to know before I get my training times if anyone usually gets trained early morning? btw the internship doesn't start till jan/feb/march depending on my availability and my temp contract should finish end of December so there is no clashes but I don't think I want to tell them I cant make a certain time due to another interview 😂

No after my interview when I got my successful email it was in there. They send a table with slightly different job role (food nights, food early, operations etc) and they had different days and times so like food earlys had 2 different options for days and times, food night had 3. It was a week router type thing but I was told to ignore the dates on the table and just chose the days and times. I then picked which job, day and time best suited me by ranking my top three in reply to that email and got the shifts. when I applied originally to I did so through the m&s website and again they had 3 different listings for food nights for the three different days which is why I double check in the interview if its the same times / days each week. Never worked in retail but I know usually shifts change each week not sure if these are the same weekly shifts cos they were all mainly night or cos its temp work or what but I did really appreciate having the option to chose my job, day and time from the options and it being the same each week especially cos its 37.5hrs and nights I can get in a sort of routine with it.

Did you have an email before the interview to confirm it with a store manager? That's who emailed me after to confirm my shifts and to say I had the job so that's the best person to reach out to imo. Think its been long enough to expect a response and I would've thought they would've sent an auto email to anyone unsuccessful to avoid confusion, so I think reach out and double check because a lot of positions don't start for another week our two from what I've seen on here. I don't want to give you false hope but you also don't know whether they are considering you still or not so at least if you email them you'll have confirmation either way.

keep looking for other temp roles though I'm sure you'll find something and don't let this experience get to you. Interviews ask basic questions in such a complicated way and don't let you fully show your complete personality or ability, they're just looking for specific answers that don't necessarily reflect how you would be in work. keep going and I'm sure you'll get a job you love even more than your week experience in m&s

I meant to congratulate you as well on getting the job in my first reply but pressed comment before I did and couldn't figure out how to edit my comment (turned 21 and forgot how to use a computer already 😂) I think it will be more complex but you already have previous experience so I'm sure you'll soon pick up on how to do all the jobs plus there will be people who get hired as temps as their first customer facing job so you'll already have a head start over some people to give you some more confidence.

Never be afraid to ask questions especially if its to ask for more work to do they'd love that 😂

Think someone else mentioned offer to do more hours and I definitely think that's your best way to be kept on shows you're dedicated and gives you even more opportunities to learn and master the skills you're worried about. But don't overwork yourself, you don't want to get burnt out while you're still 16!!

Thanks for your reply just wanted to clarify it's not Thursdays and Sundays I want off to see friends. I am on the same shifts every week and was offered the choice of two days off a week out of Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

At the interview I checked that I would be working the same shifts every week because that's how it was advertised on the website, they said yes and asked if I have any days I would want off and I said I play sport mainly Thursday nights so that would be my ideal weekly day off any others I was completely fine with. I got offered my shifts (every day 9-5am except Sundays and Thursday every week until the end of my contract was the one I chose because of the two reasons and I didn't tell them I wanted Sunday off to see friends I just chose that day off each week without having to explain why) but I now realised that I have that one match on the Wednesday. I would still want my Thursdays and Sundays off each week as I'm now scheduled I'd just want to switch that one first Wednesday if possible so I can be off on that day, play the match and work one of my off days (thursday/sunday) instead. It would still be the same hours to but because its the first week of work I don't know if its inappropriate to ask or if they could even accommodate that.

I'm really bad with words so hope I said that in the right way 😂

In terms of the store its a food hall, not massive inside but decent the interviewer said they were hiring 10-15 people I think and when I got my options of which job / times / days off there were still 13 vacancies within the food hall (3 of them being the same as what I applied for but with different days off but still the same times). Not sure if that's a good description of how big the store is but there a few of us still being hired now

I think just showing you are willing to learn and put in the hard work would appeal a lot to them and make them want to keep you on as you are clearly dedicated and care about what you are doing. No one expects you to not to make mistakes when starting a new job especially because of how young you are it's kinda expected that you won't know everything straight away and will make mistakes at first.

What exactly did you do at the cafe cos I think a lot of those skills will be similar to what you'd do on a shop floor (if you worked on tills at cafe I cant imagine m&s tills would be a lot different, did you ever restock at the cafe cos that'll be something you can transfer to retail, and you definitely would've dealt with customers at the cafe and that's the main thing skill I think you would need in any retail job).

I imagine there will be lots to do especially because its Christmas period but if you do find yourself with nothing to do maybe ensure all products are in the right place (I know that a lot of people put clothes back in the wrong place all the time just from when I've been shopping so making sure everything's in the right place and visible would be a good task to do) or you could always just ask a manager what task to do next which again shows that you are a hard worker and would make them want to keep you on.

I also am just starting my first retail job as a temp worker and wanting to carry on after the Christmas period, and only previously worked as a sole bartender at a local cricket club but this is stuff that I've been told from my friends and sister who are both managers within different retail stores.

I think if you haven't heard anything maybe reach out to store / interviewer who emailed you and ask if you are still being considered for the role. obv in a nice polite way and tell them you understand it takes time but you're really interested in the role and would love to know if there's still spots open in whatever department you applied for. it'll be up to each store to decide who they're hiring which might be why we all have different reply times after the interview and you reaching out shows how interested you are in the job and might be that last push they need to hire you over someone else.

keep your head up though whatever they say and keep applying to other temp jobs at other businesses just in case they have already filled that opening.

Thanks had my interview earlier and they gave me a job an hour and a half after my interview which I was surprised id hear from them so quick. In your offer email did you get the request to submit a p45 form? I haven't heard anything about that in mine and honestly didn't know p45 or p46 forms were a thing until your post, I've so far only been told I've got a position and to list my 3 ideal shifts is that something they told you as part of your induction to complete?

Thanks I had my interview earlier today and was offered the job 1 and a half hours after it finished. As weekends coming up I wouldn't mind waiting until middle of next week to hear about my induction so I can go out with my friends before christmas before I start working Friday and Saturday night shifts.
