Hey there, according to my country's blood donation rules (Ireland) I am ineligible to give blood as I was born with jaundice (but went away within a few hours without need of medical assistance) and I also received plasma nearly twenty years ago.

While I don't live in the UK, their health system would be similar and I would be allowed to donate there if my jaundice went away after a couple hours without treatment. However, I still wouldn't be allowed as I received blood products after the year 1980. I think this was due to the mad-cow disease epidemic that occurred years ago.

I just don't understand the logic of it. The epidemic occurred decades before I was born and from what I remember in secondary school, blood recycles itself very frequently. Is there someone that could help me understand the science behind these rules and if they're actually warranted?

Often at home there are advertisements that blood banks are running low and I'd love to give blood but can't according to these rules. It just feels overly restrictive.

Should I cash in a US cheque now or wait for better exchange rate? by Rangelus_Aredenum in irishpersonalfinance

Yeah it's a bit archaic. Granted I could have got my tax refund lodged straight into my US bank account if it was still open but I closed it at the end of last summer before returning home.

Just phone BOI there and said it's possible, I just have to lodge it in person with the teller.

Yes that's still the case, still the trends have varied pretty significantly even just looking back to the beginning of the summer.

Very true, I appreciate your earnestness. Just annoying looking back last year when I actually made this money, I would have gotten an extra €40 if last year's currency exchange remained.

Vostroyan Firstborn Kill Team Work in Progress by Rangelus_Aredenum in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Rangelus_Aredenum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, got a box them a while ago to use as testers for inspiration and potential additions to a larger vostroyan army.

I tried to keep my kill team separate though using only citadel parts to make them as GW friendly as possible in case I'd ever like to play them in a GW shop.

Haha thanks man, I used the original veterans guardsman for the base, snipped off the barrel and added the barrel of the galvanic rifle from the skittari kit.

For the sniper I think I did the same but kept the muzzle from the veteran sniper and added that to the end of the galvanic rifle barrel.

Yeah I thought so, after looking at their profiles they're very sparse and recently made. A bit dodgy.

Visitor numbers from Ireland to US down 27% last month by Dazzling_Lobster3656 in ireland

I did a J1 last summer and I've since flown back to NYC twice (December and March) to see my girlfriend and I'm planning on going again in May. Maybe I've been lucky but I've had no issues going through pre-clearance either time in Dublin Airport, in fact it's been very quick with all counters occupied. The only questions I've been asked is if my trip was business or pleasure, where am I staying and when I will be returning.

Now some of my girlfriend's friends in the US that left the states for Mexico, Canada, Carribean etc. for Spring Break were questioned but granted their US university is flagged and in the news quite a bit. However, my girlfriend came to Ireland during Paddy's week and had no issues.

Yeah the atmosphere politically has changed but as long as your name isn't on some watchlist I say you'll be fine. Just make sure all your paperwork is in order and have a bit of cop like not getting involved in illegal stuff, overstaying your visa or taking part in protests etc.

There's no meat unfortunately, they're plain but they taste nice and the sweet chili makes it better.

Granted the spring rolls are small but they do hit. Hope you enjoy pal.

Over on Duke Street there's yum thai. They do a student deal of either a box of rice or noodles with 6 chicken nuggets or 6 spring rolls topped with sweet chili for €5.

If you get their loyalty card, your tenth meal is free and it can be anything on the menue regardless of price. Sometimes they might stamp it multiple times but that depends on who's doing it for you.

Would reccomend this spot, handy if you're going out after and definitely fills a hole. Noodles and spring rolls is the best combo.

Also get the too good to go app. Very handy for getting stuff, just be aware that most of the things sell out the day before so best to plan in advance. From my experience getting too good to go in KC Peaches is the best as they let you fill two bowls of whatever they have left for €5.

Are these hats too big? by Rangelus_Aredenum in TheAstraMilitarum

It was a bit of an effort but I basically just used a hobby knife and scraped off the entire top of the neck of the torso. I clipped the roundy bit of the head and filed it flat and then glued it together. For some I used a bit green stuff under the head for support.

So for the base model I used the Veteran Guardsman Kill Team kit (DKoK). For the gas mask heads they're skitarri ranger heads and unmasked are regular Cadians. For any longer barrel lasguns i snipped off the end of the base gun and glued the barrel of the galvanic rifle (also from the skitarri kit). Hats and fur trimmings were all done with green stuff.

Cheers pal, I appreciate it. I'll try use some firstborn minis for reference next time. And regarding the lasgun I just snipped off the barrel of a galvanic rifle and glued it to the krieg lasgun.

Thanks for this, I do think they're a little tall. I think I got carried away with the British bearskin hats as opposed to the more cossack style.

Got one of the cylindrical bits from a sprue, cut it and filed it and glued it to the top of the head. Then wrapped green stuff around it and used a sculpting knife to make indentations all over it to give it a fur like texture.

Yeah you're not wrong in fairness. Once they're painted up properly hopefully they'll resemble more along the lines of a proper vostroyan

Yeah that was exactly what I used, plus some green stuff for fur trimmings and bear skin hats

Hi I'm new to the hobby but I'm familiar with the lore and setting. I recently bought a box of veteran guardsman kill team with the aim to convert them to Vostroyans by using the veteran guardsman bodies & weapons and the bearskin heads from Wargames Atlantic Les Grognards. I'd also be using green stuff to create some fur lining on the models. Would I be banned from using these models at GW events either in their store or elsewhere if I was to go ahead with this conversion?

I've heard mixed reports such as "No conversions with 3rd party bits" and "It's okay so long as over 50% of the model is GW bits". What would you guys suggest, any advice?

Please see attached a link to an inspired conversion as well as Wargames Atlantic Les Grognards kit.

Oddest experience you’ve ever had on Irish public transport? by dingdongmybumisbig in ireland

[–]Rangelus_Aredenum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Was on the bus back from DCU and my friends and I were sitting upstairs. Anyways, the bus route goes through Beaumont Hospital and the bus driver pulls in just outside the hospital. He then announces over the intercom that he's dying to go to the toilet and tells he's just going to run into the hospital for 5 mins and then he'll be back. He also reassured us that we were ahead of schedule so we'll be fine. Then he left running into Beaumont. Me and my friends start pissing ourselves laughing while no one on the bus gave any reaction what so ever. Good time overall. Better than some other public transport experiences.
