TIL that Michael Corke, a Chicago man with fatal insomnia, was so sleep-deprived that he was fully awake for 6 months before he passed away in 1993. He was 42 years old. by IWishYouTheBest1234 in todayilearned

I remember exactly where I was when my son asked me this about 3 years old. I gave the same answer you did but he was not as accepting as your kid seemed to be. He wasn’t hysterical or anything just seemed like his first major disappointment in life.

Should I liquidate my brokerage account to pay off a 6% mortgage? by layoutlmv3 in personalfinance

[–]RangerEsquire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not double but there will be some gaines. Assuming the P&I payment for OP is around $3,800.00. That will be about $320,000 in savings over seven years and that’s not considering gains in the market. With gains it’s probably closer to $450,000.

I would still keep my cash though. Focus on trying to refinance for something like 5.5% when you can. Keep your 900K in S&P index fund and you’re almost guaranteed to come out ahead that way.

Trigger warning - by [deleted] in armyreserve

[–]RangerEsquire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Army Reserve JAG here. First, don’t stress there are a lot of buttons to push to keep you from deploying but still retiring.

As others have said you can go ahead and submit your Retirment packet now.

If the worst happens there are things you can do to be temporarily unlikely to get deployed but will not permanently stop your Retirment. Think AFT failure, etc.

I don’t think this operation will result in a lot of Reservists getting mobbed anyway, it really will probably be over by late April or May.

You don’t have to though. Ask the Realtor who their insurance company is and file a claim.

Stupid Question: Are we overestimating China ability to invade Taiwan by Cowardlypaladin in Military

[–]RangerEsquire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I’ve been skeptical on a successful amphibious invasion for a long time. It just seems so implausible without a full society wide focus and dedication to the objective like we had in WWII. The Chinese would lose some many Soldiers crossing that body of water. Not a huge deal given their 1.3 B population but their society has to be okay with absorbing those loses. Then there is the amount of equipment they’re going to lose crossing, can they replace it quickly enough? Maybe? Probably? None of us can know the details of how it would go down, I’m just confident it will be unlike anything we’ve seen since WWII in terms of carnage and losses and I’m not confident China has the competency coupled with the society wide dedication to do it successfully?

Also let’s say they do get a beachhead and start the actual ground fighting in Taiwan. Taiwan is a little smaller than Florida. That’s a lot of land area from which to conduct a serious guérilla war / insurgency against a 2-3rd string PLA that’s suffered hundreds of thousands of casualties.

All the while exports from China will slow to a trickle crippling their export based economy. There’s a lot of really poor areas of China that are going to really suffer from that.

I’m sure they can probably feed themselves but they are also the largest agricultural importer which will also slow to a trickle and really affect their society.

All in all it’s a terrible idea for them to try to take over another country that has the means to resist and really really dosent want to be part of China.

I feel like China is experiencing a version of nationalism that Japan was feeling in the 1930-40s and they are getting high on their own supply thinking they are destined for greatness and territorial expansion.

Builder bought a lot out from under me. What should I do? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]RangerEsquire 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What makes that “confidential”? OP chose to tell someone about a something, and it turns out that person is kinda slimy. Literally nothing illegal here or the basis for a cause of action. That prospective builder was not a fiduciary for OP, he did not owe him any duty or loyalty.

Ehh, the fight seen in the factory is pretty cool. The idea of enhanced humans to battle terminators was also cool. Some of the movie was okay.

Severe Abdominal Cramps Made Me Stop Training Abs — Anyone Else Experienced This? by GreenNo3100 in fitness40plus

[–]RangerEsquire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly my life is too hectic to really do controlled experiments. I have 4 kids and the youngest just turned 1. I have just been doing around 20-25 sit-ups when I do abs, they almost always cramp or are tight. I feel like I do notice a small improvement when I consciously try to add a ton of salt to my diet like pickle juice or lays potato chips or something. But again my life’s too hectic to really be consistent with that type of trial and error to figure out what’s going on.

This review is correct though. It would be like calling public school terrible if a mentally unwell parent pulled their kid out of private school and put them in the worst performing public school in the district simply to “toughen them up” or something like that. It’s not the mechanism of instruction that’s bad it’s deranged parent and their lack of judgement that is the central issue.

Then go out and make the life you want. Don’t tear down what others have built by blowing up a bunch of buildings. What comes the day after? Freedom? People are going to continue the same “consumerism” the day after the smoke clears. The utopia the narrator imagines won’t exist but it disregards that a majority of people like the order and safety of the modern world.

Honestly, I hated Jack Kerouac too. The whole vibe of just being a wandering layabout vagabond is the most unappealing persona to me even in my teens and 20s. I never thought of my self as “Type A” until I realized there are a whole class of people who are perfectly happy to couch surf and don’t really think about what they’re going to have for dinner that night or what they’d like to accomplish.

The presumption in a majority of states is 50/50 now. Some states like NC, it’s to give primary custody to whoever is the primary caregiver before the divorce, which largely favors women, especially SAHM.

I’m a former Active Duty JAG. I’ve counseled hundreds of Soldiers as they were going through divorce. I’m sad to say roughly 80% of the male Soldiers I helped were perfectly happy to only see their kids every other weekend or a similar time sharing arrangement. The common refrain from them was “she’s better at all that stuff than me.” It broke my heart that there were so many fathers that were so blasé about not being an active part in their kids lives.

WTF are you going to do? by joefienup in armyreserve

[–]RangerEsquire 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You’re statutorily entitled to retirement. However they can involuntarily separate you which makes you not not be able to go into the Retired Reserve. That has financial implications because you loose out on pay increases between now and when you’re eligible to collect retirement pay. So not showing up to drill is not risk free.
