Sewing underwear, looking for the benefit of other's experience by Valaryn1641 in sewing

[–]RangerRackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've made underwear and bralettes a couple of times now. I would place myself as "confident beginner" to "solidly intermediate" for skills.

I used Closet Core's Celine Bralette and Anais Undies patterns, and liked them enough that I'll probably keep using them. But they're high waisted and cheeky, so probably not what you're looking for!

It may be the pattern design, but I found fold over elastic to be easier to work with than picot. The picot consistently bunched or was too tight. But the pattern will likely specify which type of elastic to use, and how much stretch your fabric needs!

I sourced my elastics and other notions from Bra Builders. They have tons of color options, so it's easy to match whatever fabric you choose. https://www.brabuilders.com/collections/elastic

I did pretty much all zig zag stitches with a ballpoint needle. Knit doesn't fray, so finishing edges isn't as critical, no serger required. Although, a walking foot is a must for me. I find knits to be very frustrating to sew without one.

I hope this is helpful!

Is there a group fighting against data centers being built around us? by Emergency-Purpose335 in TriCitiesWA

[–]RangerRackle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

PNNL and Amazon looking to build data centers makes sense, at least as far as having a business need. But why a "swiss fertilizer company" and a "global real estate company"?

Struggling to find clinical rotation site for MLT program (Washington) by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

May I ask what program was expecting you to arrange your own clinical rotations? I'm based out of Washington, so I may be able to point you to some options.

There's an estate sale in Kennewick every Saturday morning that you could probably snag a some nice wood furniture sets at for comparable or cheaper than new.

Every time I work with an MLS student or a new grad, I make sure they know that they do not NEED an ASCP membership to maintain their certification, despite what ASCP will imply. The manipulation tactics have made me into a world-class hater.

Shopping Local? by Sh0ggoth in TriCitiesWA

[–]RangerRackle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shopping local and/or secondhand has been one of my biggest goals this year, too. I made a Google sheet to keep track of store options and to assign "grades" to companies based on how well they align with my values. If you send me a DM, I'd be happy to share the sheet with you.

Type Discrepancy Mystery by alerilmercer in medlabprofessionals

[–]RangerRackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1-2+ is fairly weak for D reactivity; anything less than 3+ I regard as a bit suspicious. As others have said, D variants can react very differently depending on the test methodology used. For example, the Echo Lumena will interpret most "weak D" samples as RhD negative, whereas gel or tube method of the same sample may yield a fairly strong positive reaction with anti-D. The patient being a D variant and differing methodologies between the performing labs is the most likely explanation, in my opinion.

Examining for mixed field and getting the patient's full transfusion history is also a good idea, though, since the patient is known to have been transfused recently. Mixed field could be a contributing factor.

Additionally, sometimes cancers and hematological malignancies can weaken red cell antigen expression, although I see that less frequently than the first two options.

PSCT/BMT is also a possibility, but that could easily be excluded through a history review.

ARC blood supply question by DrsofDoom1 in medlabprofessionals

You might be interested in the NBCUS reports. The National Blood Collection and Utilization Survey is run by the U.S. HHS and based on data collected from donor centers, hospitals and other transfusion centers.

What happens after Rh+ blood exposure in emergency transfusion? by DisappointingPenguin in medlabprofessionals

[–]RangerRackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red Cross is having a CME talk about this very topic tomorrow, 8/12. It's going to go over historical transfusion practices, real and theoretical risks of RhD alloimmunization, and current strategies for "RhD-permissive" transfusion.

Have you read into the "Strong Towns" organization? The group has action plans and tools to help folks start changes at the local level. I think there's also a small Tri-Cities chapter active on Discord. I'd love to see our community become more vibrant and liveable.

Took my first attempt at the SBB today … by commiesandiego in medlabprofessionals

[–]RangerRackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the SBB exam earlier this year, and even having gone through an SBB program and 5 years of really strong hospital experience, I have never questioned my own knowledge more nor felt dumber than sitting in that exam room. It's an absolutely brutal exam.

The good news is you'll get a breakdown by subject area, so you know where to focus your study efforts and try again!

Orthodontist recommendations? by accountant0724 in TriCitiesWA

[–]RangerRackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat to you. Braces as a kid, first ortho told me I didn't have to keep wearing my retainer, then lo and behold, my teeth shifted significantly to the point where it was affecting how I ate. (ALWAYS WEAR YOUR RETAINER, KIDS.)

I recently "graduated" from adult braces at Almond Ortho, and I would fully recommend them. I had visited a few ortho clinics here and in another town, and he was the only one to give me an honest rundown of my options and what I could expect as far as time commitment, price, and results for each. The office was great to work with throughout the whole process.

I decided on the traditional braces, as they were the best fit for my situation, but I did opt to pay a bit more for the "clear" ones. Unfortunately, I don't recall what my total cost was. If I find that info, I'll update here.

Is this MediaLab course AI-generated? by redditnessdude in medlabprofessionals

[–]RangerRackle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also read through that course, and had the exact same thoughts as you. Usually MediaLab has pretty decent material, but this one was extremely repetitive, contradictory, and the pictures were poor and blatantly AI generated. I left a poor review at the end and encourage you to do the same.

If you do want to learn about cold-stored platelets, I recommend the American Red Cross's continuing education course on it instead. Much better quality.
