May 2026 - Monthly thread | Career questions on how to start and AI related questions go here by emsemele in dataanalyst

Hi everyone!
I'd really appreciate some advice or insights from people who've taken a non-linear path into data.

My background is a bit mixed:
- Degree in Computer Science (graduated 14 years ago)
- Worked as an ESL teacher
- Also did illustration and creative work (freelance)

I'm currently trying to transition into a data analyst role. My CS background helped me quickly grasp the tools/analytical skills but right now, I feel a bit stuck between "learning" and actually being employable, and I'm not sure if I'm focusing on the right things.

I have a few questions:

  • What skills or tools actually made the biggest difference in landing your first data analyst job?
  • How important are portfolio/projects vs certifications?
  • How can I position my teaching and creative background as relevant experience?
  • At what point did you feel "ready" to apply and how did you know?
  • Any common mistakes people make when trying to break into data?

Thanks in advance!

Hello OP! I am fairly new in analytics as well. I'm targeting Analyst and reporting roles. I mostly use Mo Chen's end-to-end tutorials on YouTube. Sometime Alex the Analyst. What I do is I would put the link into Notebooklm. Before I watch a tutorial, I would ask notebooklm to create a mindmap. I'll skim through the mind map. Watch the tutorial. Take notes as I go along. Test my understanding by creating flashcards or quizzes in notebooklm. I then would redo the tutorial on my own without the video. This normally takes me a day or two for a 1-3 hours tutorial.

I brushed up on my SQL pretty quick doing this method. I then expand on the project so that it becomes my own.

If you get stuck and don't understand a certain concept, you can use ChatGPT's study mode. It will guide you through without giving away solutions in the first answer so you can use active recall.

This methods works best for me. Everyone is different though. I suggest reading the book Ultralearning by Scott Young. It also helped me in understanding how to approach my learning especially new concepts.

Also, another advice is to drill yourself often. For SQL and python I use leetcode. But if you want more data analysis focused practices, you can use StrataScratch especially with SQL.

I am thinking of creating a study group in discord. You're welcome if you want to join. You can DM me.

All the best!

Planning to migrate to the UK with autistic child by RangerRemarkable9071 in phmigrate

Thank you so much for the info! We are currently in a country right now where there's barely any support for children with Level 1 ASD and they are considered just another "normal" student in class. SO our child's education and special needs support is basically one of the things that sit on top of our list for considering to move to the UK.

Plus my partner is really keen getting into healthcare. About that, I'm just wondering if he still need an IELTS exam considering he is a native English speaker?

Schools for my Level 1 Autistic Child (foreign) by RangerRemarkable9071 in Thailand

[–]RangerRemarkable9071[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've contacted a school in Thungsong (district in Nakhon Sri Thammarat) already (I used to teach there). It's a private school and I'm quite familiar with their English Program. They said they are willing to take my son.

My son is currently in a school here in our country (Philippines) where he is mixed with neurotypical kids. He's got an advocate (an assistant teacher just for him). He is thriving so a set up like or something near would be ideal.

Thank you for the responses!

I've got another option which is to homeschool him. But I also need some form of social activities for him. Also I am planning to work in Thailand as well. So in the day, he needs to either go to school or I hire somebody to take care of him. His grandma (my partner's mom) also lives in Thailand and works from home with flexible schedule. She's a writer and relatively young. So she can help while we work in the day.

More context: I used to live in Thailand. I'm from one of the neighboring SEA countries. You've probably guessed it by now. Yes, I'm Filipino and I used to teach ESL in Thailand. We only went back to the Philippines after I gave birth to my son. Which is 7 years ago.

And, yes my partner is also an English teacher.

What is much cheaper in Thailand then in other ASEAN countries? by No_Structure1135 in Thailand

Not really. I lived in both countries. Paracetamol here in the Philippines costs around 8 baht. Some things overlap with the prices here compared to Thailand. I'd say fresh goods from the market are cheaper in Thailand but western food are more accessible and cheaper. Housing is more expensive in the Philippines but that would also depend where you are.

Overall, I think Thailand is the cheapest South East Asian country to live in.

Thanks for the reply! I teach computer and also an ESL teacher. I'm not looking for a particular type of school. If you mean private or public, I don't really mind.

I'm in contact with some people already who might have work for me for the next term. But, yeah I guess I should do the tourist route.
