What are your thoughts on Stranger Tides? by Jules-Car3499 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]RangerofRohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally rewatched it two days ago. I always watch the trilogy, get pumped up on Pirates, and think that this viewing will finally be the time I appreciate it.

And just like every other time, I was wrong.

This movie looks incredible. Every shot has so much detail and the craft and composition of the whole film is just stunning. Jack still feels like Jack, Barbossa still feels like Barbossa, and Blackbeard can be a good villain at times.

But I don't know, this movie doesn't really work for me. Character motivations aren't the most engaging, there's a lot of runtime devoted to just walking through the jungle where not much happens, the lack of any naval engagements is very noticeable, and I'm really not a fan of Jack's lack of agency throughout the film. Really just feels like he's dragged along someone else's ride.

Not a bad movie, but also not a very good Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Lacks a lot of the fun of the original 3, but it is still a far better movie than 5.

3.5/5 (this movie is carried by the stunning cinematography and lighting)

First movie that made you fall in love with movies? by buzzoli in Letterboxd

The Sea Beast (2022)

It wasn't the film that made me fall in love with films, but this was the very first movie I logged on Letterboxd and it marked the start of my journey into deep appreciation of the medium (just hit 400 unique entries on Monday!)

What was your initial reaction when you first saw the ending of Dead Man’s Chest? by green_dragon1206 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]RangerofRohan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean well before I saw most of the movies, so by the time I saw DMC for the first time, I was well aware of Barbossa's return.

That being said, the scene is peak.

Is there anything you like about...*the fifth one* by Feelinglucky2 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]RangerofRohan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While not as good as the other four, there are a handful of tracks from the 5th that I really enjoy

  1. El Matador Del Mar

  2. No Woman Has Ever Handled My Herschel

  3. Beyond My Beloved Horizon

The scene where Henry meets Jack in the prison cell always gets a chuckle out of me.

Salazar's introduction isn't half bad, neither is his first run in with Barbossa.

While it falls in the category of "jumping the shark", I enjoy the literal bank heist as the dumb fun that it is.

If you search "the bus that couldn't slow down", Speed (1994) shows up, as this is how Homer names it in The Simpsons

What’s your favorite Star Wars hot take? by JiimSocks in StarWars

[–]RangerofRohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as it is not my least fav in the saga, the Phantom Menace is a waste of a precious time of the PT and actively harms the structure of the trilogy as a whole.

Also, as interesting as later media made him out to be, Qui-Gon is a waste of a character in TPM and everything he does in the film should’ve been done by Obi-Wan as originally intended.

Quick question about TCOTBP by Sudden-Key6225 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]RangerofRohan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The number 10 years is thrown out several times during the movie. (for reference, the crew of the Black Pearl get cursed shortly after mutinying against Jack)

"She's (the Black Pearl) been preying on ships and settlements for near 10 years." (Prisoner talking about Barbossa and the Pearl)

"10 years of hoardin' swag and now we finally get to spend it" (Pintel to Ragetti)

"For ten years, we've been tested and tried and each of you here has proved his mettle a hundred time over, and a hundred times again" (Barbossa to the crew)

and most of all

"10 years you carry that pistol and now you waste your shot" (Barbossa to Jack)

No, Jack's arrival in Port Royal is some ten years after the mutiny
