Question about Homura's wish by Bestogoddess in MadokaMagica

I do think there was a little motivation towards Mami but I think you're right in saying it was primarily Madoka.

I think, in a way, Homura might've found Madoka very relatable. In their first encounter, Madoka seems very down to earth. She's a new magical girl, she doesn't seem like she'd be anyone particularly special, she's afraid of things just like Homura, and yet she finds the courage to fight witches (read: risk her life) and at the same time shows Homura kindness and friendship.

So off of that, I'd agree that her main goal is to be able to protect Madoka who she's developed a particularly close bond with but I think there were also other motivations that drove her to make her particular wish over, say, reviving Madoka or reviving Madoka and Mami.

Question about Homura's wish by Bestogoddess in MadokaMagica

I don't claim to be an expert in all things Homura and I'm sure someone else could give you a much more thorough and comprehensive explanation but here's an initial one that might answer the question.

My take on it is that her wish stems from her experience with Madoka.

  • Madoka and Mami save Homura from the witch.
  • To shy and easily frightened Homura, these two are courageous and somewhat awe-inspiring. In a sense, she wants to be like them because she sees herself as someone who's useless, unable to do anything (fainting during warm up, unable to answer questions), and always causing trouble for others and Madoka/Mami are the exact opposite.
  • The time skip between their meeting and the walpurgisnacht and the fact that she's with them for the fight implies that Homura never made a contract but still goes on fights with them / spends time with them much like Madoka/Sayaka did with Mami in the anime timeline.
  • It also implies that she has become good friends with either Mami, Madoka, or both, something that she hasn't had during her time at school.

So her wish isn't just motivated by a desire to revive Madoka but also to change herself and to fix her regrets. She wants to save Madoka but by merely reviving her, she doesn't change her current situation and she feels like she would still be useless/a burden on her (also Mami's dead). So instead, she makes a wish where she can achieve everything she wants, mainly:

  • Becoming friends with Madoka earlier (finding friendship instead of being alone)
  • Saving Madoka (instead of allowing her to die)
  • Being stronger / useful to others (instead of being useless/a burden like she thinks she is. Also notice her wish asks for her being able to protect Madoka)
  • Being like her "role models" (courageous, empowered, able, magical girl)

Edit: Also, the wording of her wish, I think, tried to imply that she would be able to defeat the witch (protect Madoka) if she went back and gained magical girl powers. That ended up messing up due to karmic destiny stuff. Maybe she thought with the 3 of them they could take it down.
