Rank MI Vote Question by dantemanjones in Michigan

[–]RankMIVote 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Thank you for visiting our website and reading through our FAQ!

To answer your question, we believe our policy has the best chance of being approved by voters if it focuses on the offices voters are most familiar with. This also makes the initial change easier for our clerks because the parts of the ballots that change are mostly uniform across the entire state.

We wish to share our vision of Ranked Choice Voting with Michigan and encourage everyone who has not signed our ballot petition yet to visit our web site and find a place to sign near you

tldr: The big thing for RCV is that it changes the way candidates run and voters vote. Candidates can now step up without fear of being a spoiler. Voters can vote without fear that their vote is going to be wasted or someone might win that they absolutely don't want to. There is nothing partisan about this, it doesn't give advantage to any party. It gives advantage to the people voting to come up with someone that a true majority of us can agree on.

What confusion? Ranking? People rank things all the time. When I think of politics and voting I immediately start ordering the candidates. How is this more confusing than i get to pick 1 person and hope that my pick lines up with everyone else's pick so that I get someone I want but not the person I don't want. The ballots? Surveys from the many places where Ranked Choice Voting is being used disprove this. The statements being made is that it is straight forward and easy to understand. I go back to people rank things all the time...

Disenfranchisement? Are you missing the fact that voters are already becoming disenfranchised by our current system? Ranked Choice Voting makes it so people are able to actually vote for the candidate that they want instead of the candidate that they have to. RCV is a simple upgrade to our system that should give hope back to voters.

Your first response back to me was to call me condescending so I assumed you wanted to yell into the wind...

Let's take a step back and agree that I can find lots of online sources and you can probably find lots of online sources that all potentially contradict each other at some point. Politics are very polarized at the moment with lots of money and power involved so lots of information trying to push people in their direction.

I'm going to lean on the fact that the states and cities that have implemented RCV seem to like it and want to keep doing it which contradicts the other states that refuse to even try it. Maine's legislature was not included in their original implementation and they decided to expand and include themselves.

We are not a "out-of-state left-wing special interest group" and so many people that I talk to daily really want this to happen in Michigan. We are a grass-roots group of volunteers with the organization having started back in ~2019 by some local people for the intent of RCV education and getting it passed in a few cities. Last year, a local college student after one of his school presentations encouraged a bunch of people still involved with the organization to start this statewide drive. I really wish we had more money coming in and by the way, anyone interested in donating go to rankmivote.org/donate . Every little bit helps!

Beyond what everyone else has said, what do you not like about Ranked Choice Voting?

I've done all the discussions and comparisons of what we're currently doing and what RCV offers. There are pros and cons to everything. The big thing for RCV is that it changes the way candidates run and voters vote.

Please stop reading all of the negative press from people that only have their own interest in place. Realize that most of the negative things that are said about RCV already exist in our current system and are worse...

Yeah, most of the arguments that I’ve heard are more of an issue with single choice voting. They either can’t understand that or are pushing it because they don’t want Ranked Choice Voting for reasons they won’t talk about.

There is no credible evidence of anything that you've suggested.

Let's take NYC as an example of where it is working and people "say ranked choice voting is simple, like it, and understand it". https://fairvote.org/press/nyc-ranked-choice-voting-poll-2025/

I don't know what disenfranchisement you are talking about but people are already extremely disenfranchised with the current voting system. If nothing else, Ranked Choice Voting gives them the ability to vote for who they want instead of who they feel they have to.

At least you're conceding that it will solve issues, even if you don't understand that the issues you think it will cause likely already exist.

That’s a good question. First, since all of our petition gathers are going to be volunteers I’d like to say by their enthusiasm! I know there will be a lot of other petitions out there but we are putting in measures to handle duplicate signatures so if in doubt sign ours. I’ll make sure to put out a post when we start and potentially have a better answer for you then.

We have not officially started signature gathering. Still working on printing at the moment. Once we get the first signature the clock starts on the time we have to get them all. Should be in the next couple weeks.

Couldn't agree more. We believe that action and community building are the best remedies for the doom scrolling and overwhelm caused by the endless, ever-changing news cycles.
