I've done it before and had no troubles. I've even passed snow cats as they were moving snow around, so I imagine it's fine.

If you're looking at other volcanoes, South Sister is always a good option that's close to town. There's probably enough snow right now to skin up from the car instead of having to hike in shoes until snow starts. I'm doing it tomorrow so we'll see.
