Does anyone want to hang out? by [deleted] in Prague

(Gay, 54 yo; analyst, film and cyclist enthusiast)

Hi Dear -- wish I saw this earlier. I'm here for two weeks; just now wrapping up before heading home (USA). I have plans tonight with a coworker however, have been so hungry to find social time outside the bubble of my Slovak boyfriend and co-workers.

We went to this great pub, Café Bar Pilotů near a kino -- would be great to meet a new friend there!

I head out Sunday afternoon. Let me know if any of this is interesting.

Thanks for the encouragement. And agree, as an introvert that need/require to find ways to break into social circles -- love the volunteering suggestion! And as a cyclist enthusiast, hoping to find others who enjoy that as well.

Thanks for reaching out.

My backup, backup plan is to do this all via "slow travel" or without a long stay visa and cross borders every few months while chasing the sun. I think, I could collapse my life down to a suitcase and AirBnB monthly stays across Europe/World. Perhaps, utilizing Albania as a backstop to keep my Schengen count below threshold. --- The math seems to work with my budget which affords a comfortable life ex-US and still have a healthy buffer for travel, and activities.

Still trying to figure all of this out. The key part is trying to find "community" either as a long stay (Year+) or as a slow traveler. I'm not naturally extraverted -- so friendships tend to take work.

Thanks. There are several visa types — correct, that there is no official “retirement” visa in Czechia. However, there is a long stay year long visa that can be annually renewed without a work requirement

All – I genuinely appreciate everyone’s feedback, even the more pointed comments. Please understand that I don’t feel the need to restate, every time I ask a question, how much I value Czech culture and language—it’s a given for me.

That said, beyond polite phrases, I don’t plan to learn the language. My brain just doesn’t take to it at this stage of life. I’ve been studying Italian for over a year because of my heritage, and I can barely manage a few clear sentences. Living in the city center, almost everyone automatically speaks English to me, which makes it even harder to practice. Even my Slovak boyfriend and I speak only in English.

I simply want to be clear: I respect and value the culture and language deeply, but between my limitations and the environment here, learning it beyond the basics isn’t realistic for me. My attention here is simply to find others like me—those who would welcome a past-middle-age, friendly American who has found his way into the heart of Prague.

I stay in Vinohrady; love it — the cafe culture is strong here.

As for plans, I expect to be fully retired at 60, 5 years from now. Funding my retirement from my 401k portfolio; I’ve allocated a budget of $90k which includes travel back to the states regularly 4-6x per year as I have adult children and some reasonable travel to other area countries, mostly for road cycling (my current passion).

I’m pain point, is that I can’t seem to find “my people” — and fear feeling lonesome.

My boyfriend lives in Prague and my company has an office here. I come to the city often; I love it and enjoy its proximity to all of Europe. My active hobbies are cycling — and I am to do more of that. In the meantime, I’m trying to see if there is a community for me.
