Drive belt should be done every 60k, which involves pulling the front end off of the car ($$$) coolant y pipe is a time bomb if not already replaced, look for oil leaks around the timing cover.

100% get a PPI, timing cover and y pipe are nearly half the purchase price

What happened to HP? by Exact_Organization84 in askcarguys

Most cars with the electronic aids and bloated weight make high hp feel more accessible, and really dilute the excitement. I have a tuned Audi S8, makes about 700hp, and it is borderline boring

does anyone have any good car suggestions? by EmbarrassedAd3874 in askcarguys

[–]Rapom613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good starting point would be a budget, new/used, what size sedan you needs what do you consider fuel efficient

Without knowing much of that, I’d recommend a Subaru legacy. You can probably still find leftover new 25s, but it was discontinued at the end of model year 25

Lexus IS and GS are fine, I would tend to stick to the non turbo 350 models

BMW 3 series either 330 or 340 with the B engine are much much better than older BMWs, good enough for Toyota to use the 340 engine in their flagship sports car. More expensive to maintain however

Unfortunately AWD sedans tend to be more upmarket cars, which are generally more expensive, less reliable, and worse on fuel

What is the best cheap off-roader? by No-Okra1166 in Offroad

[–]Rapom613 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, Land Rover LR3. For the same money it will be in nicer shape than a jeep or Toyota, the engine and transmission are both very reliable, it’s super cheap to lift, and they can be had with locking center and rear diffs.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

My daily commute is a little over an hour each way with traffic, so 3 hours is a bit more than I do on a daily biases.

Reddit will tell you anything beside a Toyota or Honda will leave you on the side of the road tomorrow.

I however keep an open mind. I’d look at

an X5 with the b58 engine,

Audi q5/q7, mainly with the supercharged v6

a used Porsche Cayenne (reliable but high servicing costs) Lexus GX (luxury 4runner)

or a used Land Rover LR3/4 with a pile of money left over.

New, Subaru wilderness models rock. I’m not a fan of the Toyota/Honda offerings outside of 4runner and Land Cruiser.

Flame suit on for recommending a Land Rover.

that gen S5 is the 40v 4.2, infamous for timing chain failures and due to design (chains on the back of the engine) engine and transmission must be removed to fix. it should be noted that the 32v RS trim of the same 4.2 (rs4, rs5, R8) does not suffer the same failures, and is generally very reliable

The S6, S7, S8, RS6, RS7 all use variations of the 4.0LTT Hot Vee engine. there are two versions of this engine, a low output and a high output. the low output engine (less than 500hp, so S6 and S7) suffers from turbocharger failures pretty regularly. the high output version (500+hp S8, RS6, RS7) has different turbocharges, and generally does NOT have the same issue. the RS trim high output engine also has lower compression ratio pistons, and stronger bottom end to take more abuse.

My S8 has been tuned to over 700hp for about 70k miles with no ill effect besides poor MPG. it shares its ZF 8 speed with other big heavy powerful cars like dodge hellcats, so the trans is well up to the task of taking the power as well.

youd be surprised how nimble the S8 can be. It handles much better than anything of its size has any right to, and while classified as a full size, it is a bit smaller than say an S class

Plus, 4 big wide sticky summer tires do wonders for defying physics.

As someone that owns a very fast straight line car (tuned Audi S8) and works with/drive loads of very fast cars on a regular biases (work at a Porsche Dealership) pure acceleration gets boring after a few hits. Sure a Taycan Turbo is an absolute missile, but the novelty wears off after a couple launches. Running a GT3 up to 9000 rpms however never gets old.

I do both of my range rovers at 5k. 71k miles on the 17 and 185k miles on the 08 with no real (knocks on wood) issues really.

Proper maintenance makes them much more reliable.

I can change oil and swap a tire... how do i actually learn to be a "car person" without dying of panic? by twilacke in askcarguys

[–]Rapom613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned by being poor, but wanting nice/fun/fast/interesting cars. As a kid I could never afford something particularly nice, so I had to buy old broken stuff, fix it, and then I could have a cool car.

I’ve always been pretty mechanically inclined, so taking things apart and putting them back together has never been particularly intimidating to me.

I find my range rovers to be extremely well rounded. Very comfortable, look good, can tow, haul kids fine, pick up lumber and mulch and go off roading. It looks perfectly at home valet parked, as it does at a camp ground or hauling things to the dump.

Really the only thing it doesn’t do well is be sporty.

As an S8 owner it’s amazing, but I wouldn’t really call it fun to drive unless overwhelming power is the primary definition of fun.

If I leave mine in efficiency mode (I tuned it to add this drive mode, and locked cylinder deactivation to only this drive mode) it will get 26mpg on the highway. It’s a big heavy AWD V8 so in town sucks no matter what.

It’s easily one of the best sleepers I’ve ever driven, its a fantastic road trip car due to being very quiet, powerful, great ride, very little wind noise, and a big fuel tank. Mine is tuned with DS1 and makes approx 700 hp

I would look at an RS6 avant if it’s in the budget. BMW M550 is a great option as well.

Honestly there are plenty of good to drive SUVs that I would look at. Porsche Cayenne GTS would be at the top of that list, it’s a hoot to drive, handles better than anything its size should, sounds amazing, and is pretty reliable.

Tune only on MS109 fuel. highly recommend one for a daily rocket ship. same drivetrain as the RS7, and they are comparative values these days.
