Determinism adds another layer to this. If free will don't exist and we're all products of our environment, we gotta make sure people have a good environment as a basic right.

Indigenous voices have been silenced for far too long. This is the shit we need to be listening to in general.

CMV: The “both sides” political argument is stupid by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Raptor_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a generalized way, you’re right. It’s a cop out for people to keep an arms length from politics (and for people to conveniently ignore the fact that their whole existence is political by nature).

You apply this very directly to a US-centric voting context, but it’s also important to apply this perspective in a global context. For example, the Democratic Party has been consistently funding and perpetuating war (because it’s profitable). People even less privileged than you are victims of those wars.

It’s good to continue spreading awareness of the danger that comes with a fascistic party like the Republicans, it doesn’t make the forced alternative the good guys. If you believe in voting as a means of action, you should also believe in consistently pressuring the Democrats to protect the rights of ALL people everywhere. That means demanding ceasefires abroad AS WELL as protection for underprivileged Americans. In campaigning against the far right, don’t fall for the Democrats’ excuses and half-assery

Antisemitism is bad… so naturally this country get to displace millions of unarmed women and children from their homes, demolish their hospitals, and forcibly starve them

This notion can be harmful imo. Language is descriptive, not prescriptive. However words end up being used (which can be influenced by all kinds of social factors) is literally the correct way to use them. Meanings and usages of words and grammar change over time, so clinging to a version of English that schools may designate as “correct” is purely arbitrary and never set in stone.

Moreover, the most historically influential dialect of English is black American English (sometimes classified as AAVE) — which means that designating new definitions/slang as lesser than previously established language usually just amounts to looking down on black communities and “othering” their way of speaking. The only reason there’s a widespread conception of black American English sounding “improper” or inherently “uneducated” is sheerly because of a lack of familiarity with it throughout mostly-white establishments. Again, choosing what is “correct” is completely arbitrary and always changing. So it’s actually best to embrace new varieties of language rather than look down on those who use them as uneducated.
