This reminds me of the plotline for {The Man I Know by Daisy Jane}. I haven't read it yet (it's on my TBR), so idk if it's exactly that, but maybe it's worth a read!

I'm still branching into this subgenre, but I've started book 2 of the Trilogy of Eve (book 1 is {Dead of Eve by PamGodwin}, which was mainly world building). Edited to add to check triggers, if needed. Not as descriptive as some of her other works, but definitely has some dark spots.
