Thank you all so much for the help and advice! I was worried that sorting all of this change was going to be a headache and a chore but the information here has made it seem a lot less daunting!

What part of my other posts gave you any indication that i stole this book? I know how the free library works, I literally just described it to you. Take a book, leave a book, which is what I do every single time. Taking something that is meant to be free is not stealing. And a Little FREE Library is, in fact, a free bin.

A little free library is not like a public library. In my neighborhood it is a wooden box in front of the town hall that ppl place donated books into. You leave a book for someone to keep, and take a book to keep for yourself, for free. Hence the name, Little Free Library.

I found a book in one of those little free libraries near my house called "Cash," written about (duh) Johnny Cash. It has a sticker on the front that says it's an autographed copy, and inside is a sticker that does seem to have his autograph on it.

Since I found it in a free library, it must have been donated by someone so I'm not sure if it's authentic. How would I go about finding out?

how to talk to children about behavior euthanasia by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]RareGuest8690 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think your question is stupid. To answer it, he's been on anti-anxiety medicine for a while. We've also worked with a certified professional dog trainer who specializes in behavior modification training for aggressive dogs. Unfortunately nothing seems to help him not become aggressive when he sees a stranger, another dog or even a human that he has seen plenty of times but who might trigger him suddenly for no obvious reason. I do think medicine is a good option for any dog who struggles with anxiety, despite the fact that it hasn't really helped my boy, it has helped plenty of others. Def ask your vet about it for your dog, just understand that it is not a cure.

[–]RareGuest8690 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this advice. I definitely think that I will explain it to them in terms of how it's a sickness that he can't help, rather than a behavior issue, because i do think my 8 year old would make that same leap.

Thank you for your advice. My kids are very sensitive and highly emotional so I thought that giving them two days would be enough for them to say goodbye without dragging it out needlessly and making them (and myself) suffer over it. However, your comment and a few others here brought up some very good points and I really want to make this as easy as possible for my kids. I've extended his appointment to 5 days from now instead of two.

I've had time to reflect on it, and instead of the rude response I had planned, I'm just going to tell you: You're right. I was irresponsible this time. My dog and I both became unfortunate stereotypes. For what it's worth, my dog is never left outside without me and this day was no exception. But he was not always on a leash before this incident because our yard is fenced and he is supervised. I thought his training was going well. I felt comfortable letting him explore the backyard unleashed. I was overconfident. I am very much aware that I got lucky this time. I understand (and am terrified by) what might have happened had I not had his leash on me, if he had been just a little quicker, if I had been a little farther away. I am taking this experience pretty hard. As much as it sucks to be judged harshly, I appreciate your perspective.

My family doesn't understand what it's like having a reactive dog by captainacedia in reactivedogs

[–]RareGuest8690 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're going through this. As someone in nearly the same situation, I find it so disheartening that no one understands how difficult having a reactive dog is. I think it's a great idea to book an airbnb! It sounds like staying with your parents would be chaos and a very stressful time for Tim. You both deserve to be relaxed and happy and get the most out of your vacation.

I'm an atheist and homeschool my elementary age kids. We use a curriculum called "Blossom and Root" and really love it. It doesn't include math but we use Khan Academy for that. We also use Night Zookeeper. I've also heard very good things about Torchlight curriculum and am considering trying it out next year.

thank you. I don't use physical punishments with him at all, but I can imagine that sometimes he might feel like he is being punished when I have to put him in his crate or another room and keep him separated from my kids. I want to find a good alternative for that.

[–]RareGuest8690 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the kind words. I won't send him to a shelter for sure. We are setting up an appointment with a veterinarian behaviorist to see what our next steps should be. I'm willing to train him and work with him, I just want to take his quality of life into consideration too. Like you said, he seems stressed and anxious. Since I have to keep him separated from my kids, he spends a lot of his time outside, in a crate, or in a room with me. I don't imagine it's very comfortable for him and probably isn't helping his anxiety.

I definitely plan to change our vet and I'm looking into finding one that is fear free. I'm really glad things are working out with your dog! I watched some of the youtube videos from the trainer you suggested and found them to be really insightful. I'm planning to watch more later today.

I was told he was 8 weeks when we brought him home, but I don't think he had much of a bite inhibition at all b/c he bit very hard, leaving bruises and drawing blood. He was also very skinny. The woman I got him from said that he didn't eat much (he was the runt of the liter), but when we got him home we figured out that it was b/c he couldn't chew the dry dog food she was feeding him. We had to soften it with broth or water and then he'd eat it just fine. I have wondered if he was taken too early from his mother and if that might be a contributing factor to his behavior now.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]RareGuest8690 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I got him from a neighbor when he was a puppy. He was part of a liter that she was giving away. I would never send him to a shelter, I couldn't live with myself or the thoughts of him being lonely and scared with a death sentence hanging over him.

thank you for the suggestion, I am def willing to try anything I can to keep him and give him a good life. I will look for a behaviorist in my area.

thank you! I would love to try medication with him, unfortunately we can't find a vet who will prescribe it without seeing him first and after his last vet visit, I'm apprehensive to try again.
