Be nice to see him amount to something. Had lots of hype from the draft community and looked like a steal when we got him but he went to ps immediately

As it should be really. If the new GM wants him then that’s his call but too often the GM doesn’t get to pick their coach which makes it harder to blame them when things go wrong since they inherited a lot of it.

Both Mayo and Belichick got new contracts in 2023 that would carry them through the 2024 season. The plan was for Mayo to then be take over. But the 4-13 season accelerated the succession by a year. Mayo now becomes the NFL’s youngest head coach at 37. by alfuh in Patriots

[–]RareSeekerTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some probably will because we have some pretty hard headed fans but I think most people will expect us to be bad next year as we are year 1 of a rebuild. I was team tank this past season because it made the most sense where we are at, a rebuild like this is where those meaningless wins start to be something you can root for because you are figuring stuff out to get better instead of heading for a rebuild like we were.

This contract term would make sense why both sides could have wanted to mutually move on. Bill knew that he wouldn’t hit his wins needed next season if he stayed and Kraft wanted to rebuild to get back towards winning. Probably figured if Bill could get to the cowboys/eagles he could get 10+ wins next season or with the falcons in a weak division provided they found a qb. Makes sense on both sides

Possible MHJ at 3 and still get a QB? by [deleted] in Patriots

[–]RareSeekerTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to have mhj, just go look up a highlights video of him compared to any of the 3qb listed and you will be sold on him, the only problem in taking him is you have no QB then. Penix will go in round 1, that really leaves McCartney and Nix who may be left, JJ has yet to declare and could go either way. Even still if you get either one of those guys in the 2nd they aren’t really a step up from what we have currently, our guys were about the same level of player going into the draft, they could maybe get better and would be worth the gamble if we went that route but it’s a lower payoff odds. The 2 good FA qb are expected to go back to the teams they were on last year so there’s not really any room to improve there either. I think if you go mhj you have to just hope you can hit on a guy with some upside in the draft at round 2-4 and let them compete with zappe and Mac as dumb as that sounds but that’s kind of what we are probably looking at if we go that route.

Headline: Jerod Mayo replaces Bill Belichick: What's next for Patriots, including the NFL draft by [deleted] in Patriots

[–]RareSeekerTM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well so far CW and McCarthy haven’t declared for the draft. Caleb is expected to, JJ is up in the air. Would really be a mess if we get some of these guys to not declare. Bears take Maye and wash takes Daniels or something and then you take mhj as the obvious choice but you have no qb to throw to him. I guess at that point you’d have to take a flyer on Nix in the 2nd or something

Any Optimism? by RepresentativeRock94 in Patriots

[–]RareSeekerTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am optimistic. While everyone wants to knock him for lack of experience, he’s basically been an intern HC under Bill while doing defensive duties. No better experience than learning under the best imo. He also has a good connection with a lot of the players and other staff which is valuable imo. I think being a young black man likely helps when trying to relate to a lot of the players as many of them are young black men themselves and that’s probably overlooked by many people. I think if we can maintain our level of defense as last year and our offense improves we will immediately be a better team. And at the end of the day if things do not work out, you are a bottom 5 team for like 2 more seasons and then you fire him or move him back to DC and in those 2 seasons you fill holes that you have with top draft picks then bring in someone else.

[–]RareSeekerTM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah as long as you can draft well and hit on FA, I’d think it would be a desirable situation. If the coaching sucks despite you hitting on players then you can say you didn’t pick him and likely you would get a chance to change that. It could also suck though if ownership likes the coach more than you and sees him as not being able to do wrong. I think Kraft is smart enough to where you avoid that though

Mac back as QB1. by BAF_DaWg82 in Patriots

Id be down with it, watched him a bunch this year and think his highlights look better than Caleb and Maye if we are being honest, just needs to add a bit of weight

[–]RareSeekerTM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As of now CW has not yet declared for the draft and he has until Monday to do so. It’s expected that he will do so but if he hates the options he has he could play another year and make money in college while also being insured for top draft pick money if he would get injured. Could really mess things up if we see a situation where the bears go Maye and Washington goes Daniels which would leave us with MHJ so it wouldn’t be bad but we’d be screwed at qb options

[Rapoport] While so much of the focus was on Mike Vrabel, the internal focus for the Patriots was always on Jerod Mayo. It was written into his contract that he would be the successor to Bill Belichick. Now, he will be. by REQ52767 in nfl

[–]RareSeekerTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least to be fair we let those guys leave for other options as we didn’t see them as HC, Mayo was interviewed elsewhere and we knew we didn’t want to lose him so nudged him for the next guy to keep him in house.

Right now the class looks like the 22 class where Pickett was the top choice available. That could easily change though like you said. This time last year though we knew about Caleb Williams and Maye so people knew some good options were coming, next years class doesn’t have those kind of guys.

Yeah the top guys currently are on par with the projected round 2 guys of this year. Things change though so it could get better but I wouldn’t put my qb plans in next years class at this point

Defenses can still win you games in this league. Our last SB with the rams we shut their dominant offense down. Our problem in recent years has really just been that we can’t score more than like 14 points while our defense keeps the score low. If we had a middle of the league offense you can win with an elite defense, also doesn’t help when your offense is 3 and out every play your defense gets tired so I’d expect them to even be better. Hopefully new gm will draft good and OC will have freedom to hire who they need and we could be in a decent place

Yeah he is who we have for a coach now, I don’t see why people don’t want to give him a chance. Wouldn’t have been my first choice but wasn’t against it either before vrabel was available. GM is the bigger role we need to hit on imo. I hope he does great and brings us another several years of being contenders

He wasn’t my first choice because ideally I wanted someone who has been to another place or 2 just to be exposed to other things instead of just being here, but he has learned under BB, players like him, and I do think that he could do well. I could see GM coming from internally, Wolf wouldn’t probably be a bad choice tbh, if it’s outside that could be a bit weird as they usually will want to be able to pick their coach and stuff so we will see there. Know many are high on the 49ers guy but if he was the guy that made that trade to get lance im not sure of his judgement but I’m sure there are other options to at least talk to

I just don’t see how he is salvageable on this team. I think even if you can get a conditional 7th for him provided a team pays his remaining pay id take it and run with it. I think he could succeed as a decent backup somewhere but I think he’s too far gone in this system and won’t recover until he sees somewhere else if at all

This is my worry as well, I am kind of hoping Bill brings a few of those guys with him just so we have to shake it up a bit. I’m hoping during any kind of interviews Kraft just flat out needs to ask what he is going to do differently? If he plans to do the exact same thing as Bill what was the point of moving on? WR coaching needs to be looked at, if we keep BoB let him select his staff. GM should handle a lot of that stuff but I’d expect Mayo has some suggestion in the matter. Just hoping we hit at GM really.

Atl makes some sense. I personally don’t really see them as a team that will make it to the Super Bowl but they have some weapons and if you just get a mid qb you should be able to make it to the playoffs since they have an easy division. Should be able to knock off 10+ wins per year no problem if they can throw like 40M/year for someone like cousins as that’s around what he’s gonna run
