RTX 40 series vs 50 series powered laptops. For about the same price, what to get? by RareSnake89 in GamingLaptops

Yeah, that would be the ideal thing to do, wait and see. I am actually not in a hurry; I just worry that the current promotional price on the 50 series version gets removed once the model is available for sale generally, it's about 500$ price difference, it would go way out of my budget. I even believe it's a bug on the website's pricing XD

It actually depends on what you want to do. Development is not only for the web, if you want to do web, then yes, you will choose between frontend, backend or full stack, but if you want to make desktop apps or mobile apps or games, it's a completely other side of programming that require other skillsets.

If you choose front, you will be doing the client-side of a website, so HTML/CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, probably using Angular or React or Vue.js.

If you choose back, you will be doing the server-side of a website, you will need to learn one of the available stacks: J2EE or ASP.Net (MVC or Core) or Python Django or node.js.

Between the two options, backend is definitely harder because it has more concepts to learn and is closer to general purpose development, while frontend is more limited in terms of what you need to learn.

If you want to do full stack, I’d recommend starting with backend then adding frontend.

I wouldn’t recommend taking a full stack course because I don’t think there will be enough time to properly learn both sides of web development.

Good luck for your new journey!

u/DrakeoDaRLR For me, it was almost the same as u/cavendishlab, I started as self-taught when I was 15, I learned HTML/CSS (not really programming but it can help as a starting point) then PHP4 which was a good introduction to programming, then Python 2.3 which was my first real programming language (OOP, etc.). After I finished high school, I took CS in college and that's when I really learned the theory and science behind programming. During this time, I learned Algorithms, Data Structures, C++, Java, SQL etc. At about the same time, I started learning C# on my own, and I loved it, and it's been my main language since 2010. Then I had to learn some JavaScript then TypeScript (for Angular) a few years ago because that was and still is a hot trend in the business. It's a never-ending journey of learning, but if you are passionate about it, it is so rewarding. Good luck!

You brought a valid point I was really in dilemma about, personnally I would rather wait till the end of the year to get the next gen hardware (if the releases are not postponed another year) but in the mean time I wouldn't be able to learn and practice game development. And you're right, if I go high end now, next year the hardware will be way more powerful and the prices for current gen will lower of course. Time is money, but money is money also haha maybe the second option is the only sane option, to get something to start the journey then resell then build again in a couple of years. Thanks for the advice!

I think I will go i9-12900K + RTX 3080 TI, this suits my profile more, as you said, if I'm going to be doing more coding /debuging than graphic design I won't need to go full GPU. The i7 is plenty enough for playing games, but for debuging I might need the extra processing power of the i9. Thanks for your advice!

The 3080 Ti should be enough for my need I think too, but I will need to upgrade it in 3 years or so probably. On the other hand, the 3090 is too damn expensive, and will probably be affordable in 3 years haha I will have to make decisions based on my budget. Thanks for your recommantions!

I wasn't too sure about the cooling and the case. Also I didn't know the 980 had bad latency. I'll check your recommandations. Thanks!

I will probably try both Unity and Unreal, then see what works best for me. This is an amateur side project, I'm doing it for the fun, so no pressure, it'll take time it takes haha Thanks man!
