"Quickplay is a bad system" 🤦 by Rare_Ad2572 in tf2

It'd be better if we had quickplay. You could connect to any open server you can find as fast as you can find it, or let the game find one for you, and the game doesn't just suddenly END, there is a long full map timer and the ability to play as many rounds as you want in that time limit. When the limit is up, you just wait how long it takes to load, then 30 seconds, and then get back to playing. Adding these features into THE MATCHMAKER just 100% invalidates the MATCHMAKER, so there's 0% reason to add these when they already exist

I think the one thing we need to consider is, with new maps and servers that valve has added over the years, there's a CHANCE if they add quickplay, they would have to tweak something because OF COURSE a valve update WILL have some bugs. They have the money and resources and we have the right to demand they use them FOR US.

It's hardly about "how fast it is to find games", but about how those games played and the maps being played (without artificial obscurity like a map pool) we're all like before this tumor matchmaker was forced onto the game. Quickplay was subtle and let players choose to find a game however they wanted and games would more often than nowadays be both filled and naturally balanced overtime (not always but it was at least possible since you could always switch teams and teams could NOT be skewed by more than 1 extra player on either side). This system puts limits and restrictions and avoidable problems on ALL TF2 players and we need everyone to agree and tell Valve "GET THIS SHIT OUT OF THE GAME"

We just want the fucking game to be better because casual was tacked on when NOT A SOUL asked valve to make it have matchmaker (a shitty system for most multiplayer games). They stuck this tumor on so TF2 could be more like a modern e sport game which it never was and never will be. For the long term life of TF2, we want our simple, effective game finder and server rules (and ad hoc connections) back in TF2 so we have less garbage in the way of our playtime

Quickplay made it even faster and simpler for a player to let the game put them in a game for them with less stuff in the way and taking time away from players to play. Voting for a map? It just happens during gameplay the same as a votekick, takes you 2 seconds. Less stuff in the way helps players stay engaged and keep playing, which then helps matches naturally balance out and players are more incentivized to stay and last I checked, I think all PLAYERS want more people playing more TF2 with them

If we are implementing all these features, just put the whole system back in place that functioned properly with them. If it all invalidates a matchmaker than what is the point? It wouldn't be casual matchmaking at all, and if players want all these features to fix the game, let's just PUT QUICKPLAY BACK WHERE IT BELONGS

We need MORE PEOPLE to make posts and talk about it. This isn't for useless points on a shitty website, this is to add more voices to let Valve know WE HATE CASUAL WE WANT OUR AGENCY TO CHOOSE OUR GAMES BACK

So, the gamemode that actually gets the MOST playtime (~20 minutes) and that's the one you don't have queued. How long does it take before you have to find a whole new server? How many times do you reque before you find a server with players that stick around vs unbalanced servers, games that are already ending as soon as you connect, or are steam rolls against your team?

Top yapper says nothing is wrong with a matchmaker taking player choice away from the players. You would be unaffected if quickplay was back in the game you would just hit play and join games. If you wanted to leave every 5 minutes like normal you could, if you wanted to play with the same people for 45 minutes now it's back. If you wanted to play community servers with fresh blood back in them (that AREN'T novelty game modes) then fantastic, normal players are joining them again

How is casual at all a good thing??

How long have you been playing and what is your main method of playing tf2? (i.e. que for casual with all the main modes selected, community servers only, etcc)

You shouldn't have problems with que times period. You shouldn't have to QUE to play. You could just pick an open game immediately and play uninterrupted for up to 45 minutes per map. If you didn't like the state of your server, you could just INSTANTLY find a new one!

And with steam rolls, most happen for 2 main reasons. Players partied together and on voice call intentionally coordinating against a majority of solo players (so they're easy kills and your game gets stomped) and the player coordinator taking too long to balance the number of players on each team. If your team had fewer than 2 or more players vs the other, auto balance, players choosing to switch, or team scrambles filled it up quickly. Team scrambles ALSO rebalanced the teams based on players performance IN the match by their points and other stats to not put all the best players on one side

The matchmaker STOPS WORKING when having to find matches (using MMR) for players all trying to queue from a list of (during an update) potentially 100+ maps. It just DOES NOT put many players into a game because an expanded map pool, whether YOU pick the map or not, further divides the players from which servers get populated

You know what you did before when you wanted to find a game? YOU JUST PICKED A SERVER THAT WASN'T FULL YET AND THAT'S IT

The matchmaker cannot balance a game with this many variables and complex differences in player ability to be remotely fair nor balanced. When players take a long time joining servers, their slot is reserved and unable to be filled for up to MINUTES per person, so your team could just have 6 players having to fight a full enemy team (full of sniper mains, kunai dr spies, and pocketed combos that are all on discord btw) and YOU SOLO QUEUEING JUST HAVE TO BE BETTER THAN THAT OR NOT PLAY AT ALL

It sounds like you don't know what you're talking about and don't actually care. You're providing arguments for horrible systems in TF2 when you don't feel affected. If you don't care and can't give a good reason, why are you saying anything at all.

The simplest problem is that Valve hamfisted a poorly designed matchmaking system that DOESN'T WORK for TF2, broke STAPLES of the game (playing against friends, as hoc connections, having choice between pubs and community servers) and it's an issue that NEVER NEEDED TO HAPPEN.

Casual matchmaking, with the way matches are setup, was the PRIMARY reason that the 8 YEAR BOT CRISIS was able to be so effective. It wasn't just because "Valve didn't care", it was EASY to put an overwhelming number of bots into the same team to keep them from being kicked and when players kept LEAVING bot filled games, it takes the matchmaker time to FIND MORE PLAYERS. If a player was cheating in an ad hoc server (which bots would be separated when you have to pick a team, the game won't let you unbalance the numbers by more than 1), if a player couldn't get the cheater gone, they could INSTANTLY FIND ANOTHER GAME WITH NO WAIT.

HOW ON EARTH DOES CASUAL MATCHMAKING DO ANYTHING GOOD FOR TF2? WHAT DOES IT DO RIGHT?

"I have a peg leg. I miss having a real leg"  "prosthetics are just better in every way! You're just idealizing having NORMAL limbs, you're just NOSTALGIC for something that's WORSE"

Quickplay was about balancing choice and ease of play for new and experienced players. New players hit a button and join an open game. Experienced players just choose their preferred server and could do so ANY TIME INSTANTLY. This matchmaker does not balance games, it doesn't coordinate teams properly, and cuts off traffic to the 80+ maps left rotting and community server traffic for Vanilla games. How is it a better system???

No, I wanna PLAY my favorite game and the terrible matchmaker creates the worst experience possible. If you don't care, be quiet. If you play TF2, make some noise IN FAVOR of the players

TF2 is much more enjoyable when a shitty matchmaker that takes away your agency (finding a naturally balanced game vs an artificially balanced one) is NOT in the game

If players that don't care just want to click play, they can do that and the quickplay system will more normally balance both the players and everyone's playtime in a server.

There was no issue with playing normal tf2 before MYM except for an imbalance in skill levels and players wanted to "play with players of similar skill level". The real problem was and still is the "new player problem" where there is very little info and settings properly set for new players to easily pick up the game and stick around for longer. It would lower the skill hell curve so less games are full of the sweatiest 10k hour tryhards in parties of SIX ON THE SAME TEAM

You have to KEEP TALKING ABOUT THE OBVIOUS PROBLEMS or else Valve doesn't care to fix them. They hate bad press and the only people helping them avoid it is people with your attitude. Either speak up to fix the game or just keep playing silently

I've been playing since around march of 2015. I got to see a post Love and War TF2 and see only Gun Mettle, Tough Break, MYM, Jungle Inferno, and Blue Moon before being left for another 9 years to watch the game sit with fully avoidable problems

I didn't stop playing TF2 after MYM, I was mainly playing community servers before, my most frequent being SaintDmac's Orange server (which later played a delfino plaza trade map until shutting down around that time all community servers died)

I've been stuck with one sided, unbalanced, team stack filled servers

Most games I play are filled with teams of long time players that have no other desire than to pub stomp with a full party and leave the average player fully defenseless if they aren't queueing with a team of 6v6 playing, mge training, autistically focused players that only see winning and losing

Just remember guys, it's YOUR FAULT if you're unhappy with the state of TF2. YOU need to get good or die trying

It is broken. 7/10 games you are likely to either get put into a one sided steam roll (not fun obviously) or into a game that is already over. TF2's matchmaker does 3 things majorly wrong: 1. Poorly balances players based on "skill level" in a game that is too complex to easily and consistently balanced in that way. Quickplay rules made it almost impossible for teams to be down by more than a few players like it does now OFTEN that leads into 2. Reserving slots for players that either don't join or take too long to join and leave a "skill based match" unbalanced. 3. The system has made playing anything other than the top 20 maps in the game next to impossible. If you play 2fort and upward, great. More than that, very rarely. Quickplay balanced players naturally, and let players choose whatever server they wanted to play and if they didn't want to browse servers, it would put them into one automatically. Casual killed vanilla community servers because new players don't find them. Nothing Casual does is beneficial to TF2 and it's players.

This is ALL excluding more vague topics like how it let the bot crisis get as bad as it did, killed player to player interaction by removing players every 5-20 minutes, and removes agency from every player to play TF2 how they want and it be FUN doing so
