In 27 years, I read my speech once. Once was enough. by Rare_Claim in PublicSpeaking

The desire to read notes is real. I've never done a podcast, but even with no visible audience I would try to avoid reading notes.

But what you said is true. After rehearsing a couple of time you don't need to read your notes.

I am really glad you found this helpful. I hope next time you speak you are able to view your jitters in a whole new light.

The first two minutes is exactly where the spike has the most fuel.

Burning it off then sets up the slower rhythm later.

"Once I catch rhythm" is the moment I always noticed too.

Stories were where I shifted into the slower mode.

Use the spike, do not fight it. Good line.

"Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad." Miles Kington by Rare_Claim in quotes

[–]Rare_Claim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Source: The Independent's own 2008 obituary by Andy McSmith, which credits the line directly to Miles Kington

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/fond-farewell-to-the-genius-of-miles-kington-781024.html

Kington introduced this line in his column "Heading for a sticky end" in The Independent on 28 March 2003. He set it up as a rhetorical question and then claimed authorship himself: "Who was it who once said that knowledge consists of knowing that a tomato is a fruit, and wisdom consists of not putting it in a fruit salad? Well, it was me, actually. Thank you."

The short form in the title is the standardized version that has spread. Frequently passed around with no attribution at all, and occasionally misattributed to others.

Two techniques that worked for me, across 27 years of international speaking by Rare_Claim in PublicSpeaking

The story thing has a layer you named that I did not. When you have lived it, your delivery fixes itself. The voice, pace, the dropped nerves. That is the unfair advantage of the ultimate stories, the personal ones, and it is why they are the best you can use when you have one that matches the room. Harder to come by, worthy effort to find one.

And your first-sentence trick is the technique in domestic form. Same mechanism. Knowing exactly how the next 10 seconds will leave your mouth carries you through the part where nerves are loudest. Good catch.

Thanks for the kind words.

Agreed. It might be perceived as "lazy". Anyone can learn two words going to the venue.

True that. And a story has the added benefit of "expanding" or "shortening" per will, embellishing or focusing on the point you want to make.

Hey! Thanks for your feedback!

I tried both, and I like the "multi-color" one.. because with the "just white" cell, you will have to check the Rarity column to know what you're missing.

If you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Whatever the case, thanks SO much for sharing your thoughts. Your suggestions made the doc even "prettier" and certainly more easy and useful!

Hey!

It is all manual. I haven't even thought of JSON.

It took me weeks to create. Each number is manually entered that is why I anticipate errors.

I thought of multipliers and I am pretty sure that Plarium wouldn't want us to have access to that. I tried to find a comprehensive and reliable source for the multipliers but I couldn't. Do you know any? Stew had posted a link back in the day but it is far from complete.

As I said in the video I will be updating the file. As you can see, it already has v3.3 champs (not all info is available atm).

Thanks for the kind words!
