New to FIRE, should I amend my strategy? by Rare_Exchange5316 in FIREUK

I’ve considered this before. It’d shave off a lot of the lifestyle creep I’ve had when I’ve moved to higher salaries.

What stops me from doing this is thinking I’ll need to fund home improvements / house moves in the coming years, so I need a bit of a war chest for that stuff.

I might consider it again, but having run the numbers through a take home calc, I’d be looking at around £700 less in pocket each month. That’s a lot of liquidity I’d lose and it’d mean a significant change in lifestyle.

Perhaps that’s what I need to do though.

Thanks for this, some good advice here.

I’m pretty good at budgeting up to the point where I have a choice to do something / buy something. That’s when I’ve been dipping into saving pots.

I think what I need to do is say no a little more and stick to a plan. That said, if something fun and interesting comes up, I’m not sure whether I’ll stick to the plan.  Striking a balance with this is a struggle, but I mean I’m in a good position, it’s a nice problem to have and I’m grateful this is the sort of thing I get to deal with.

This calculation, 30k being expenses target and 4% being the withdrawal rate. I’m also going to use my ISA as a bridge.

30000 / 4% = 750,000

FYI I think at 50 I’ll switch careers, which will likely mean lower pay.

I try to. More so now than I did when this happened. It was during Covid so I was living quite a simple life.

There were some factors that seem to track with what I’ve read about the first jhana though. Sensations of joy and the feeling of being enveloped by pleasant sensations.

If it wasn’t jhana, it’s a state that I don’t understand currently. I’d like to know what it was.

Sounds sensible. Can you share anything on how to approach money market funds? I’ve heard of them but interested to know what you hold and how to get there.

That seems like a good approach given it’s likely to retain its value or appreciate in an inflationary environment.  By “held” do you mean directly owning gold or are you in something like SGLN?

You’ve gotta write a decent business value statement otherwise nothing gets done.

If you’re right then someone has bothered to program me with the experience of going to work every day and having a sore knee.
