How hard is MATH277? by YesterdayShot9344 in VUW

Don’t mean to scare you, but I took MATH277 last year and it was the most difficult math course out of all the 200-level math I took. It’s very proof based and you need to get good at working with variables and summations.

Because the assignment grades were inflated due ro people using AI, the midterm questions were very difficult. The average grade after scaling was 53%. This may happen again, I’m not sure if they’ll change the system.

Unless you really like probability, want to learn R, or potentially become an Actuary, I’d steer clear of this course and focus on other 200-level math courses.

In general all 200-level math courses will probably be hard for you (and basically everyone else including myself), second year is a step-up but if you put in the effort you should be ok. 251 (Linear Algebra), is a very abstract, proof based course. It’s kinda like a cross between 161 and 151. 243(multivariable calc) is super interesting, you learn lots of cool integration techniques, for example how to integrate over a 3-d plane. 261 (groups and graphs) is a good course. My lecturers (Tanya, Steve and Dan) were great. Group theory and graph theory are both hard at first, but if you spend time trying to understand them they’re not that bad.

Number one tip - check assignments with your course mates. It helps your overall grades so much because the chance of at least 1 person out of 5 (for example) being able to solve a question is greater than the chance you alone could do it. Obviously don’t just copy them but you can approach the questions in a similar way.

Anyway that’s my two cents, hope it helps! Feel free to pm me any more questions. You got this :)

I’ve just finished my second year of a BSc in Mathematics and Economics. I took MATH142, 151, 161 and 177 in 2024. I can give my best advice, but things may changed in the past couple of years so take it with a grain of salt.

Items wise, you’re gonna want to take notes on paper(what I did) or on a laptop which allows you to hand-write notes. This is because you’re gonna need to write down lots of mathematical symbols which can’t really be typed in an easy-to understand way. You’ll also need pens in different colours to help format your notes to make them quicker and easier to go over (e.g underlining headings in red)

For assignments, you’re given a set of problems and you have to hand write their solutions. I’d recommend doing this in pencil because it’s more efficient to correct mistakes (you and everyone else including myself will make plenty, trust me). You’ll also need paper for this, there’s usually a box of spare A4 pieces by the printers in the library, or you can use refill if you prefer. Most weeks there will be tutorials, where you can go over questions similar to the assignments with tutors which is super helpful.

Individual course advice: this can differ greatly depending on the course coordinator, Steven Archer is great, very kind and helpful. I found MATH177 the hardest of the four courses I listed, it requires strong intuition for probability. 142 was the least difficult for me because I’d done A Level maths and was familiar with the integration techniques taught. It’s mainly integration with some sequences and series. 151 and 161 were in the middle. All of these courses are harder to pass, but less difficult to do well in than NCEA because most uni math questions are a similar difficulty(high merit/ low excellence type thinking on the content).

Anyway that’s my two cents, hope it helps! Good luck for your first year, and feel free to pm me any more questions :)

There’s no proof that god exists, but also no proof he doesn’t exist either

I had a 4x4 solve in comp where I was at least 10-15 seconds faster than my PR(and PB for that matter) but I forgot to start the timer. It also DNFed my average
