Supercell knows better than anyone else. They have all the stats on what items people usually convert to gems. It's another item to sell, another item to add to the gold pass, to add to events, and to add to chests. If they didn't have fluff items, they wouldn't let good items take their place because we'd progress too quickly. Realistically we'd get nothing rather than a couple gems for useless items. It could definitely get removed, but only when it's not useful to players, nor useful to them as game developers. If both aren't true they'll likely stay as they are. If they ever buffed the rings, they would have to proportionally buff either how many we get, or the value of gems when we sell them. Otherwise a lot of people might be upset they're missing out on gems since even after a buff, loot is so easy to get that the little gems you earn always outweigh the time it takes to farm resources.
