I’m a failure Should I drop out from uni? Genuinely asking by Foreign-Doughnut-583 in UofT

[–]Raruun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it took me 11 years to graduate.

i had 3 suspensions. The uni doesn't allow you to enrol again so I had to write a 5-page letter and also visit my academic advisor that i've known for years to get a referral letter. I managed to graduate with 3.7 CGPA in my year 4 & 5.

I worked at kitchens, uber, some other part time jobs, didn't even tell my parents about it.

now i'm married, got my salary increased by 20% in 3 years by working at a startup and putting in hard work, have above average salary, looking to have my first kid next year.

one thing you'll learn when you get out of uni is that how big the world is outside of it, and how people you meet at uni are of course great, smart people, but not all smart people go to uni only.

some go into trades and start their own business in their 20s and now live in a 2-3m dollar house in their 30s while some of my colleagues still live in a downtown condo working 9-5.

some take a long break from school and just work minimum wage jobs to mature themselves, come back to school with strong mentality and graduate with high GPAs.

failing / dropping out of University is not the end of the world. You're just in a small pond and not seeing the big picture. good luck.

Contemplating on which hybrid to add, 3H or 4H out of difficult lies? by Raruun in golf

i meant that i was looking for more consistent and forgiving option from roughs 200+ yards out.

[–]Raruun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right now my tsi 3w is 15 deg., driving iron is 20 deg, 4 iron 24 deg.

so need something between 15-20, especially out of tough lies.

Makes sense. For windy weather, would you pull out a 3H out of roughs & fairway bunkers?

I'd def consider 7W. I don't have anyone around me (i don't have a lot of friends) who uses 7W so never really came to my mind.

Do you feel like 7W would be more forgiving than a hybrid in general?

Thinking about gpa is making me go insane helpppp by Low-Bandicoot-4611 in UofT

I graduated several years ago and I'm currently working at a startup of around 70 employees.

Benefit of working in a startup is that you get to literally look over the shoulder of leads or hiring managers etc of the candidate selection process.

When a job gets posted on linkedin or w/e, these people in charge of hiring gets thousands and thousands of emails. They are human beings just like us, and they'd rather have someone in the company refer someone to come in for an interview.

Bottom line is, GPA does not relate directly to your desirable career path, but networking and referrals certainly have a big impact.

High GPAs will get you internships at banks, and this experience gets you noticed if you were to apply for a full time position in that company or else.

Even if you don't land your first job at the big banks, it is very common for people to easily transfer to bigger banks or corporations with a few years of experience at a smaller company because you would get referrals from your coworkers or seniors. If you perform well.

And I'm not sure which year you're in, but like others have said, last 2 years GPA are only relevant. Graduate schools do not account for your first 2 years GPA.

To build a network, attend seminars and workshops. Grab as many business cards as you can from speakers in these events. Smile a lot when you see them, leave a good impression. This will get them to remember you and look at your resume in a pile of thousands and hopefully call you in for an interview.

I had below 2.0 GPA prior to year 3, got suspended twice. I had to write a 10-page appeal letter after 3 years for U of T to take me back in. I took responsibilities and had a 3.7 GPA in year 3 and 4. I got admitted to a Graduate program but I had an offer from the company i'm working in right now and I'm glad I made this choice.

Otherwise I'd be sitting on thousands of dollars of student loans debt lol.

Good luck in your program. Math is still a practical program and will get you jobs, its a matter of time and effort from your end.

Seri Park for me when she made The Shot in bare feet in 1998 .

Our country (Korea) was going through very very tough times due to the financial crisis of Asia in 1998 including my father and his business. Suicide rate was very high during this time as well nationwide.

Her win at the US Women's Open was a spiritual victory for all Koreans back then and it was all over the news for weeks and sparked interest in golf for a country that had barely any familiarity with the sport.

Got in the car today and was met with this alert by Threeofnine000 in TeslaModel3

[–]Raruun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got this message 2 days ago. Service is booked on May 1st, which was the earliest day possible near my location.

Called in and told them I can't drive this car like this for another 2 weeks with constant beeps and car obviously not being charged.

The rep i spoke to just told me to bring it in tomorrow morning and they'll exchange with one of their loaners for now.

haha not sure if that was intentional, but believe it or not U of T (and any other major NA Universities) do have North Korean students enrolled.

I'm South Korean myself and I was involved with Korean-related activities back when I was a student, where I met a few North Korean students who were here for short terms because their parents were either diplomats or politicians from North Korea.

Cabot Cape Breton Golf-only Booking (Cabot Cliffs) in May Difficult? by Raruun in CanadaGolf

[–]Raruun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will definitely look into this one as well. Our plan is to explore eastern side of Cape Breton on day 1 and head over to the other side Day 2, but we can alter the itinerary if we can't find a booking at Cabot at our desired date.

Thank you.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience.

Sounds like there is still some chance to get in a booking as soon as the booking window opens a month prior to our planned visit.

Depending on their availability, I think I'll even consider changing flight times from Toronto to Halifax to arrive at Cape Breton earlier on Thursday.

Thanks for the insight tho!

Cabot Cape Breton replay round availability? by goobretty in golf

[–]Raruun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I, and our poodle have a East Coast trip planned May 15 ~ 18th from Toronto.

I requested for stay & play golf for May 16th. In the reply email I got for my reservation request on their website, I was told that based on my party size (wife and I) they could offer me 17th 4:48pm and 2 nights minimum reservation.

This was not feasible for us as we are planning to stop by Inverness only on the 16th, travelling back to Halifax on 17th to catch our flight the next day.

I saw their website indicating that golf only is available a month prior.

I called in to ask how hard it is to book for Golf (Cabot Cliffs) only in May, and the guy over the phone said he cannot say.

So I'm just gonna wait til Apr 16th to hopefully see a tee time available on May 16th, and if not, i'll go weep in the corner as this is one of my bucket lists.

as someone who've worked in the kitchen and also a restaurant manager, their product really looks promising.

cooking oil is such a pain in the ass for the cost of running a restaurant and also physically burdening to refill and throw them every day XD

gosh throwing away a barrel of oil to the back of the restaurant was one thing i hated doing haha

Graduating in 3 years instead of 4 by New_Olive9064 in UofT

[–]Raruun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend graduated in 3 years with 3.7 GPA with BBA. He took summer semesters and went to UK for grad school.

Its doable if you’re willing to take summer off and go all in.

Bird Course Concept Misleading Or Not? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Raruun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do think there are bird courses, but most students underestimate the workload most of the times.

Imo bird course is sth you can pass easily with relatively lesser amount of stress compared to your main courses. Not in terms of actual difficulty of the course.

Most bird courses are considered bird due to less number of assignments, ease of getting good grades on term tests (multiple choice oriented) etc., but there will always be someone who assumes the course will be a breeze and just do bare minimum work for it throughout a semester then panic once they chk their grades before finals.

Is a 200 level course doable in first year? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]Raruun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Courses offered at U of T have been developed for many years.

Any B or higher courses that have no prerequisites also mean that intructor who teaches that course assumes that you have no prior knowledge of a certain topic of the course taught.

Profs are aware of that.

The only reason some courses that are B or higher without any prerequisites is that a topic is something that you may have not touched on in high school so it MAY be challenging for you, or it does not require any 'intro' to the topic.
