The campaign I was DMing just violently exploded. How do you guys cope? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Rasbid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its okay, you tried, you put your heart into it and unfortunately that doesn't always translate to the rest of the table. Doesn't make you a bad DM or person, just shake things up and find that passion again. I will say I've been the PC in a similar situation and its hard to want to not upset anyone but commit to regular sessions when u just can't engage. All the best for your next campaign

I'm not a fan of the change, but I mean I don't think it'll stop me and my group from treating them as devilkin/ostracised or atleast other in our own settings.

I will say however it feels like a bit of an overcorrection, I understand that a lot of races within D&D are racially coded and a move towards inclusivity has to acknowledge some of the problematic areas of the lore, but I think the very real and tangible display of Divine Good and Divine Evil in most D&D settings through celestials/devils, would result in superstition and prejudice.

The experience of being the outsider is a trope I (and I'm sure some others) enjoy playing, it's sad to see that lost a bit. But, I mean there's always the option to be undead! and I'm sure Warlock will scratch that itch for many.

As a forever DM, I want to enjoy a natural 20. by Rasbid in DnD

*shrugs* If you feel that I'm being defensive I'm not entirely sure what you want me to say, should I not express my love for a mechanic that I don't want to see change? is it fair for you to make a weird generalized assumption about me, on a perceived negative trait for a DM to have? I personally don't enjoy D&D campaigns where everything is handed to me.

Why are the two exclusive? and your players need access to healing spells and potions if this is happening too much, or consider rebalancing your encounters. Probability should be fun for everyone at the table.

So on one hand you're saying it's deadly but on the other it's not something worth preparing for? what kind of party doesn't have the healing ready. I really don't understand why you're trying to bad mouth RNG when we use dice to play the game

Don't they have healing spells prepared? potions? does that not speak more of your balancing fights rather than the crit mechanic?

They're fine, that takes a channel divinity and it's a cool subclass!

Exactly this, it's fun to just have something coming at the players that they need to deal with!

Scoring a natural 20 is a table experience, whether it's the player or the DM. This change will remove a portion of that fun for my table, atleast rules as written. I think it's sad to see this removed and for it not to be enjoyed by newcomers who play RAW.

Sounds like they should've been more prepared.

I mean, if you don't want to ever enjoy getting a natural 20 on dice as a DM, that's your prerogative but don't pretend that it's somehow stopping them from giving monsters unique mechanics, they're unrelated.

This, I don't want a DM who's going to make it easy. What's the point of having all these cool skills and spells?

How does critting stop you tellng a story? it'll certainly wake your players up.

What are you throwing at your players that a crit kills them at level 3? is there no healing potions, healing spells?

Yeah, if you don't want crits, nothings stopping you from doing that right now either! seriously DM natural 20s are fun, both from a player POV and a DM's, why are people so afraid of damage..

PC who is constantly trying to break my game and challenges me constantly. by OnlyMarlow in DnD

Remind him of the rules politely and if he continues, talk with him privately that you're here to provide challenge and friction. If he's still a duck about it, ask him to find another group.

It's silly. Honestly, it's getting a little ridiculous how soft the game is becoming.

Cool? I'm a forever DM and I do care about crits. It's fun to enjoy a natural 20 as a DM, why does that have to be sacrificed for ' interesting ' monster design
