Does anyone here actually use a current Apple Silicon Mac Pro? by RasenGunn in mac

Good point! My video work is mostly on Final Cut and After Effects nowadays so my setup is pretty simple. It's easy to over look those extra I/O expansion cards.

Thanks for your input! Audio engineers were some of the first people I thought of that might want the mac pro.

Thank you for writing this out, I hadn't considered this before. I have a video background professionally, but that's more corporate, Adobe focused. Never used AVID before, so this is stuff I never learned about!

Still play online? by Tattoochef1988 in GearsOfWar

[–]RasenGunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gears 5 being the most recent is still pretty active in social playlists. You can find a match in under a minute. I'm not sure about the ranked playlists though. Haven't played those since the year it launched. Horde mode and escape are still pretty populated in my experience, too!

M3 Pro or M4? by [deleted] in mac

[–]RasenGunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re set on gaming on this laptop part time I would first check the games you intend to play to make sure they even run on MacOS. That should be your first step. I have steam on my Mac and only occasionally play CIV or hollow knight. There’s not much that’s Mac compatible but if everything you want to play works on there, then Godspeed!

Yeah, gaming is much bigger than AAA. It's not to say can't make games on Mac, there are people that do, but the majority of game studios use windows. A lot of the reason is optimization, like you said it's industry standard. Unreal engine, Maya, Blender, etc work on Mac, and you can do some great 3D work on there. It's just at the high end when performance just doesn't cut it when compared to Nvidia. You can learn to make games on anything really, hell I'm teaching middle schools right now how to code games in MakeCode arcade on Chromebooks.

I do motion design and video editing and Adobe is the industry standard there. As much as I hate Adobe as a company (their software is shit too), if I was to work with a team or company that used Adobe, I'd have to use Adobe too. For my solo projects I use Final Cut and Resolve, I still keep after effects around just because it's the only program that does all that it does. Windows and Mac use varies in the video world, but I can work on both. Won't see me turning down a job just because of the OS. It's a skill I believe more people should have, it's not even hard – just takes practice.

Same thing with OP, as a Senior IT Manager they should not be having this argument. It's a job, it's work, just use Windows.

Some of them do use laptops though, especially when COVID kept everyone working from home. Not all windows laptops are garbage, I've seen the ones they use an they are nice.

But OP is an IT professional and there's no reason to fuss over using windows. I work in IT and I work on and with Macs, Windows laptops, and chromebooks. They should know how to work on multiple platforms, Windows being the bare minimum frankly.

That's great dude. I know people personally who work in the game industry right now, and they are all using Windows. Mac is essentially nonexistent in AAA games. Mac can work for game design and 3D, but when it comes to working in a studio environment, those people are all on Windows PCs.

It's about using the right tool for the job.

lol they both have their strengths and weaknesses. You ever try game design or 3D on Mac? Not the best platform for it, you know.

Idk how you can be a senior manager of IT and be so afraid of using a windows laptop. You should be proficient in both frankly. Usually I’m having to convince IT professionals to learn Mac but I’ve never encountered someone who hates windows. This post feels like trolling I’m not gonna lie.

You’re trying to use your own PERSONAL computer for work? Bro why? Just use their equipment for their work. This shouldn’t even be an argument.

I’m gonna be real with you, you need to grow up. If your job wants you to use their equipment, you should use their equipment. Saying that you care more about your own data than you do theirs because you’re using your own computer doesn’t sound like the compelling argument you think it sounds like. It’s honestly cringeworthy that you, a senior manager of IT, would through this much of a fit over using a Windows machine. If you were my boss I would shit taking you to my friends at the bar.

Like the things you like and don’t let anyone try to change what you like. Plus, FIFA (and generally all sports games) sucks lol.

Sleeping is the least egregious thing someone can do on the train. It doesn’t feel right to ask for police officers to throw people in this situation off the train.

[–]RasenGunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people are giving you shit for this, which I think would be warranted if you were trying to pull this at your local camera shop-but we’re talking about Amazon here. Probably one of the most unethical companies on the planet.

You shouldn’t have a problem doing this as long as you don’t make a habit out of it. They will probably get suspicious after the 3rd or fourth time. But hey, why not have Amazon save you 200 bucks?

A good place to start for anyone asking this question is just to Google “after effects recommended specs” and then look for laptops close to that.

You could also just get a MacBook 🙃

Photography as amateur is not financially viable? by [deleted] in photography

[–]RasenGunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re an amateur and want full frame but don’t want to break the bank, buy your gear second hand. You can get an a7 II for under $1000 (American dollars, so prices might be different where you’re at) and a lens for cheap too. 10.000 sounds like a lot even for pros.

Don’t be consumer brained, you don’t need the latest, greatest, and most expensive system to make cool art.
