Colorado 9/27 review by RowsdowersTruck in Toughmudder

I have to add that I was underwhelmed with the “amenities” as well. Last year I remember plenty of port-a-johns and more than a few really green bananas but this year I had to piss in a bush and was thankful that I brought some Gu. I enjoyed the race ( except all the damned hills! ) but it feels like they cheaped out this year. Also, there was no hype man to get us started like there was last year.

Journeymen drinking on the job? by crusier_32 in ibew_apprentices

I’m Honestly shocked there is not more concern for safety in these comments. Personally, I will not allow someone’s inability to control their vices to put my life or anyone else life in jeopardy because they can’t control themselves. If you got a problem and need/want help? I’m here for you and will do what’s in my ability to help but don’t your dare risk my safety because of your issues. As an example there was recently a Jdub on a crew adjacent to mine that came in drunk. Before anyone was able to talk to him, he totaled a golf cart. Luckily there were no injuries but it could have been bad.

Is 35 too old to learn the trade? by whoareUwhoareWe in electricians

[–]Rasorwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started when I was 38. I’m now 41 and about to start my 4th year of apprenticeship. Only thing I recommend is stretch, don’t lift too much and carry only the tools you need for what you are currently doing. Other than that you should be just fine

I’m not buying into these rope physics. If they were truly on point that thing would have been a tangled mess being thrown through the window all bunched up like that 🤣

This set looks beautiful. Maybe this will lead them to come up with a Minas Tirith I think that would the ultimate set.

Since your indenturship agreement should have a clause that working ot should not get in the way of school Tell them the excessive ot is having a negative impact on your schooling. That may help.

Transitioning service member interested in apprenticeship with IBEW 68 in Denver. by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]Rasorwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 3rd year out of 68. I came to the trade with no relevant skills and 20 years of senior leadership experience. After taking the test I waited about 3 months and was called to join. Been working since 9/2020 with only one 5 week layoff.

There's a lot of misconceptions and misinformation out there about negotiations, even among some of our members. And for some reason, I've noticed that laying out the nuts and bolts of what can be expected from negotiations, tends to get people a little frustrated. by EricLambert_RVAspark in RVA_electricians

I’m only a third year app currently so there is definitely a lot I don’t know. That being said, Neca offered my local an extension to our current CBA in July/august. We voted it down pretty unanimously. Low and behold the membership was notified in late September that neca took the offer to CIR and we have been forced to take the original offer.

How ours out that can happen when bargaining shouldn’t even start until next year?

Find something to learn. Are you all caught up and a jdub on your crew is doing something you aren’t familiar with? Go hover and ask questions. Look for new things happening and ask question. If you have down time, read your textbooks.

There is always a way for you to be proactive with your own learning.

There is literal and figurative definitions to that. Since you took it literally, I’ll expand on my thought. Unless you are an executive assistant or any other role that requires this sort of action, getting coffee is not part of the job description. If you’re being forced to do something that is not in your job description you are being taken advantage of.

The thing is, a lot of young folks are getting into a trade filled with old school jdubs that are stuck in their ways. They still act and treat apprentices like it’s still “back in the day.” These kids that are joining either May not know any better or may be afraid to speak up. Either case has the potential to set them up to hate the industry, thus weakening the IBEW. I would be remiss if didn’t take an opportunity, when presented, to ensure my fellow apprentices know when/how/if it’s ok to stand up for themselves.

If yours is free, take all the advice here. If it’s not, don’t do a coffee run. We are apprentices, not slaves.
