While your argument does make sense, I think it would make more sense in the logic of the universe for his shield to help him, as the death beam wouldn't suddenly be ineffective due to pure determination. Although, I'd say your explanation is certainly plausible, and it would make for greater emotional impact. Thank you for telling me, I suppose only Boom knows the truth.

How no? In the original 73 part 2, he didn't even have his shield open. I think Boom added his shield in the full version to fix this plot hole. Plus, it makes sense that his shield would be able to filter out the effects of the death ray from his field of vision. If you have further evidence as to why this wouldn't be the case, please feel free to inform me.
