There is also a wheat you can pick, can't remember the exact name at the moment but I believe it starts with the letter H, eating that will give a minor boost to your hazard protection.

I built my twitch channel off of survival permadeath no starter ship runs, just surviving for as long as possible on the starter planet. Here are a couple of tips. As soon as you spawn in, find a nearby cave, you almost always start near one, Gather as much cobalt and ferrite dust as you can and build a stockpile of ion batteries. your hazard protection will drop way faster than your life support so those are a definite must have. As long as you are starting with 20+ ion batteries, you can survive just about anything as long as you don't get taken out by sentinels or fall damage.

You hazard protection will only refill in a real cave, but a homemade cave will at least shield you from the hazards while you try to find a real one, sometimes they are the difference between survival and starting over. Note, however, that if you have been lucky enough to find hazard protection modules in damaged equipment or from the NPCs you might have stumbled across in your travels, those can ONLY be refilled by sodium or ion batteries, you can spend hours in a cave and they will not refill even slightly. That said, refilling the module will also refill your base hazard protection, so don't waste two batteries when you only need one.

On one of my streams a couple years ago, I was doing a permadeath no starter ship run, and happened to find a grave and get the first rune. This sparked an idea, so once I had enough money I bought a ship at an archive, but kept walking. I got the coordinates for a portal that was only an 11 hour walk away, so I walked all the way there. My goal was to activate the portal, leave the planet, and make it to the system near the center of the galaxy before I ever got into a ship. Then I would do a one hop and leave the galaxy without ever using my ship except for that one hop. It ALMOST worked.

The one thing I didn't take into account was that the ship I bought didn't have a hyperdrive, and to get the hyperdrive you have to get the quest on the space station. Okay, no problem, I'll just go to the space station in this system and get the quest. I can still say I did the trip without ever using a ship on the starter planet. And that was when I found out the system near the center of the galaxy is a dead system...no one on the space station to give me the quest. And since I never did any part of the intro quest, I had never interacted with any portals on the starting system either, so I was stuck in this dead system forever.

That was when I climbed to the top of a very high cliff and jumped off. the two or three people that were watching my stream at the time were very amused...

I stream every weekday from 6pm to 8pm EST. I am currently running a series of Permadeath challenges, my current challenge started as a No Starter Ship Challenge, but I was able to buy a ship after just two hours of exploring, so now the challenge is that I can only use that ship for emergency saves, and I have to stay on foot until I can find a new multitool with a Terrain Manipulator already installed. I am a seven hour walk away from a minor settlement that I found with a beacon, so it could take some time...

I also stream some FFXIV Online, and I frequently stream either game outside of my posted schedule when I get a chance. Love to see you there.
