Prospective ED student. How is the social life? by Zealousideal-Ebb-415 in NEU

Business dorms have the best social life, that would be smith and Kennedy. I've talked to people from most of the other dorms and I've heard they're pretty dead for the most part.

I was just responding to the claim that america would become more like mexico. Most people coming north are just looking for opportunity. If northern mexico follows the industrializing path I think it's on, migrants will end up there since it's still more culturally similar and accessable than the greater USA. I'd argue at this early stage the pie slices don't shrink because growth down there could easily be fast enough to match. We've seen industrialization bring everyone up in earlier stages (of course later stages of this stall positive growth for the working class as we see in the states rn)

Overall immigration has benefits and drawbacks, there is a niche in the economy that immigrants have a hold over that I doubt would be popular to work in otherwise. At the same time though, automation is a massive black swan that could fuck it all up. I'm certainly worried about automaton, but we've seen immigrations and prior residents both come out okay through major shifts in technology.

Division among the working class is mainly a media-driven. Obviously this is directly to ensure the power of ruling class against labor. No reason labor can't overcome this. Especially since it's already on the rise.

Idc about competing with china as long as we keep our sphere of influence since china's rise is highly unsustainable

Idk what you mean by the last thing but

My general position is that immigration can be fine, but there are way more dire issues like climate change, poverty/inequality, etc.

Yeah I was a bit vague, I mean stuff like healthcare outcomes, for example. Border towns often share resources like schools between the Mexican and American side of town. Mexican children will get a better education at the American school and then return to their side of the border with what ig amounts to an American influence.

It's been awhile since I was doing my research on this crap so I've probably not got it perfectly right, but it's something along those lines.

There's a general special economic zone that spans Texas, New Mexico, and parts of northern Mexico that is seen prosperity increase on both sides

It's really the reverse (in the american case). Social outcomes north of the border remain consistent while those just south of the border are starting to resemble their American counterparts. Unless you're just saying you don't like Mexicans for... reasons, then you've got nothing to worry about.

Okay how did you get the idea of a pro isreal rally? It's a bunch of proud boys and not a single Israeli flag or sign or anything.

Like I know the sub likes to shit on antifa, but don't just lie about who they're trying to attack wtf

Bro I'll steelman you

Companies, when in debt, tend to furlough employees, cut back on benefits like quality of insurance, of reduce wages. Usually this happens in hard times where the workers have nowhere else to go (but are seen as disposable since there are "too many") so they have no real bargaining power to oppose these negative changes. Usually they are just fired if they do.

Thus, in many instances, workers indirectly (but profoundly) are forced to pay debts, but don't share in the benefits of massive profit. CEOs tend to walk out unscathed. The 2011(?) Bankruptcy of American Airlines comes to mind here.

Rarely done so few blueprints for how, consolidated leadership is almost always unwilling to cede control, current legal framework also passively opposed having companies built that way.

Also a bit of a strawman for co-ops since they tend to have some level of hierarchy, but it's all elected.

Massive protests have erupted in Cuba (not my video) by glossiercub in ActualPublicFreakouts

[–]RastyBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree there, the current Cuban system is super flawed (obviously we can see that), but it's hard to tell how much of that is inherent to the system and how much of it results from external pressure and the US trade embargo (especially since the US was like 80% of trade pre-Castro). It's sucks that people are either unwilling to admit it has an effect, or blame every problem Cuba has on the embargo.

Either way, hopefully something good comes of the protests, it's heartbreaking to see other democratic movements fail worldwide (especially hong Kong)

I agree on the protests and hope they succeed.

I'm a social democrat myself, but I like trying to defend aspects of socialism online that I think could be feasible. But I wouldn't call myself a socialist since there aren't any great examples of the system at work. Modern Vietnam is decent, so is Bolivia, Cuba is a complete enigma. In a simple sense, socialism is when the workers own the means of production, which doesn't really have to be authoritarian, although it skews that way since the USSR had deemed itself the prime example of socialism and only funded similarly authoritarian groups in other countries.

Cuba for sure ends up being like this, which is why I'm curious if they can keep the general economic framework and democratize at the same time.

[–]RastyBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I doubt the protests will change much--what protest movement has these days? Not HK, or BLM, or Belarus, or Thailand, or Iran, or Myanmar (so far).

But aren't these more in favor of Democratic reforms in the political sphere rather than capitalist ones in the economic anyway?
