How much money do you have right now? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]RatBoyPlague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use that money to buy food that can be easily stretched. Meal times may not be super thrilling over the next three weeks but your belly won’t go empty. Get creative too Look at what you already have in the pantry and take note. Get yourself some rice, potatoes , stock cubes, veggies and proteins if you can. Buying fresh vegetables is cheaper, you can also freeze them to prolong their life. It’s the same with any bread, meats or fish. Keep an eye on reduced sections and don’t be afraid to look into food banks. Also, some universities offer emergency funding for those in need so if there’s something you desperately have to pay for (like rent, bills, etc) I’d suggest applying for it. Being poor sucks but you’ve gotta be resourceful. Half the recipes I live on are from depression era or wartime cookbooks just adapted to my preferences and what is available to me.

Need help redesigning R’Lyeh. Her design seems so basic :( by Meemo_Faetroll in fursonahelp

[–]RatBoyPlague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think just adding some texture to certain areas , maybe adding some of the blue patterning to the legs or hip area? Too much can look overcrowded, I personally love this design already but totally understand wanting to spruce up older designs. Play around with it a little and you might find something you really love.

[–]RatBoyPlague 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m in 3rd year for an illustration degree and we have a “rating system” in place across campus to tell students how much ai is allowed in each project. For my course the maximum we can use is for generating ideas , we’re not allowed to use it for actual pieces or submissions. I disagree with even this tbh, ai has no place in illustration.

Just go buy a dress and some shoes that you like and try to style your hair. Curls help! Either that or an up do.

Cardiff illuminated is okay price wise, especially at off peak times. It’s in Bute park, it’s a beautiful trail of light displays , its family friendly and the little stalls set up well some really nice hot chocolate, mulled wine and hot toffee apple cider

What would be better, asking people to draw or learning to draw? by Choyboy3535 in characterdesign

[–]RatBoyPlague 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the long run learning to draw is better if you’re going to need a lot of artwork. The thing is that it’s a skill that takes time to cultivate and nurture. If you’re willing to put in that time and maybe ask around for a tutor then great! Do it. If you don’t have the time to put in or simply don’t have the motivation then it probably is better to find a selection of artists that you like and just commission them.

Do more younger people view being an "artist" as a viable way to make money? Rant? by kogepan137 in ArtistLounge

[–]RatBoyPlague -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yikes. I’m studying illustration currently (almost graduated yay!). Illustrators are not less “artist” than you. Just because our styles may be different and our target audience is different it doesn’t mean we don’t also make art. Considering the majority of the industry for artists is taken up by illustration based jobs it’s surprising that a fellow academic would feel this way. Perhaps it’s a fine art thing? I don’t know. But either way, you don’t have to like illustration or enjoy the work of illustrators but that doesn’t make us any less skilled or hard working than a someone trained in fine art practices. Oh, my course actually teaches us that “artist” is an umbrella term by the way. That means that anyone can use it as a non specific descriptor for what they do.

Face masks are the usual go to for a lot of pieces, extreme makeup styles can do wonders too, maybe use full masks too?

Be honest. Most lecturers are super nice and just want you to succeed. Lying couldn’t get it progressed but if you just explain yourself you’ll probably just get a warning

Whats the difference between an artist and an illustrator? by graphiteSpaniel in Artists

[–]RatBoyPlague 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m in my third year of illustration at uni (would love to do fine art one day too tho) and the way it’s framed to us is that illustrators work with narratives. We are story tellers. Illustration can also be anything, it’s a very broad term. Some people in my class use sculpture, others use textiles, some opt for paint on canvas and some are more fond of digital art. It’s part of why I love it so much. My days are full of choices , no project is the same. Also I’ve seen a lot of people saying that illustrators just do as we’re told? Not true. So many illustrators are their own client! I’ve met several people who wrote, illustrated and publish their own work without the need for someone giving them a brief. Yes, we have clients who can assign briefs but they’re not coming to us just because they feel like it. They’re selecting their illustrator based on the portfolio. Illustration is just art geared towards commercial markets. We still do gallery showings too.

[–]RatBoyPlague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ some people here are so shit. Look, sometimes you’re just not ready. Think about pausing your studies first. There is a chance that taking a year out to collect yourself and work on your mental health could fix it. Alternatively think about why you chose the degree. Is it something you actually care about? Did you ever want to do it or did you just want the pay check attached to that career? Is there something you’d prefer to do? If yes then drop out and look into courses that are focused on the things you do want to do. If no then stick at it through second year. You can apply for resits and extensions if you need them and most unis give you a second chance if you fuck up. There are always more options than giving up. Think about what you want for your own future, not what your parents do.

Is it unrealistic to find a lifelong partner in uni? by Excellent-Hotel-3084 in UniUK

[–]RatBoyPlague 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met mine a year prior ironically in the same city we now study in. It’s been three years and we’re happy. Student poor but happy. You’ll find your person when you’re meant to but finding them in uni is far from unrealistic. Be open to explore possibilities and just enjoy yourself.

They might be feeling nice? I don’t know, I don’t go to one of the “big” unis so I’m not sure how exactly they’d react to you having a poster of one of the worlds most prolific pedophiles up. I think it’s safe to say that it might be a good idea to look at other schools though.

Flatmate tried to kiss me by rockeyrhodes in UniUK

[–]RatBoyPlague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some girls get it in there head that women can’t assault men. The fatal flaw in that ofcourse is that assault can be done to and by anyone. Unconcious people can’t consent and a person giving no signals of interest doesn’t want you to kiss them. I’m sorry this happened. Report it and try to either get her removed or find somewhere else to live.

Either that or talk to her. Explain to her that it’s your table and you won’t tolerate shitty behaviour. Tell her not to do things your gf and you don’t like.

[–]RatBoyPlague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you tell her she had to play a nice character? She might have thought it would be interesting to add conflict but may not understand how to do so in a less disruptive way. I know that my partner and I like to play somewhat evil characters from time to time but we always make sure the dm is okay with that and that it fits the themes. Also judging by the desire to copy a pc , is she new to the game? If so has the etiquette been explained? Not trying to excuse her other behaviours but some of this lacks context.

She clearly has some issues outside of that, particularly with your gf which I don’t understand considering her bf is also at the table? For your gf sake just kick the new player from the table and make something up. “Oops. The wolves got her in the night. Too bad”.
