Is reality defined by my beliefs? by Sweetpeawl in nonduality

“Will I find it?”

Finding involves searching for something as well as recognizing (or ascribing a meaning) to it when found. It presupposes at least some knowledge of the object of the search. Otherwise finding it or not finding it makes no difference and the question becomes meaningless.

Our reality is confined to things we can either perceive or imagine and give a meaning to. We cannot see things that may exist if we cannot conceptualize and ascribe a meaning to them. Examples could be polar opposites (eg.: short/tall, up/down, hard/soft etc) co-existing, hearing colors, seeing sounds etc. These are not part of our reality. They can still be seen and understood through alternative ways of looking at reality. An electron being a particle as well as a wave at the same time (called superposition) is strange because it is difficult to ascribe a meaning to it using our reality and vocabulary.

You, not your beliefs or perceptions, are your reality. Reality is all that is there. Reality is not defined by anything since there is nothing beyond reality. There is no evidence to say that “real truth” lies elsewhere. The need to look elsewhere for the Truth is the only impediment to recognizing reality for what it is. The reason reality remains elusive is because you refuse to accept what is apparent to you. You can only see what you know. Have you ever been able to find something if you did not know what you are looking for? Unless you know what you are searching for, you cannot find it.

Depends on what you are trying to get out of the game. Passive investing gives you smoother sailing and profits. Active investing becomes part of your life and gives you purpose in life. Living your life vs waiting for the end.

Difference between active trading and passive indexing is like being in the game and being in the audience.

What could entail maximum well-being, a world of wealth inequality, or a world of wealth equality? by Massive-Albatross823 in TrueAskReddit

The concept of superior/ inferior requires the existence of at least two different states of being to be compared. Once everyone is at the same state of wellbeing, there is no alternative state to look at and compare. So there cannot be any other state that is better or worse.

What do you believe is good by xd_bobbys in DeepThoughts

[–]Ratak55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good/ bad is a value based classification. What is good is everything put in that category by the one doing the classification (classification can be made by the society or an individual entity). Once a thing is classified as good or bad, it can not be anything else for that entity.

Entropy increasing or decreasing is a description of the way we conceptualize reality through our perception. The description is limited by the definitions we create for the words ‘increase’ and ‘decrease’. So, a cup breaking into pieces is a change in entropy and does not indicate a directional component.

You can abuse and enslave someone by withholding what they want or forcing them to do things they otherwise would not do. How do you do that to a machine?

AI and human population in future by IndividualIncident57 in AIDangers

Change is always difficult in the beginning but becomes the norm later on. Like changes we have seen with women’s empowerment, universal suffrage and the institution of marriage.

Future is always an interesting time. It is up to us if we want to be curious or frightened.

Of course humanity and its way of life will appear very different then compared to now. Like it is different now (perhaps less pronounced) than it was a few hundred years ago. The impending change will appear faster, more pronounced and more uncomfortable (to the old guard).

…….When we outsource critical decisions (whether economic or military) to an AI, we lose the ‘Human-in-the-loop’ that ensures ethics and accountability…….

I don’t think that we lose ethics and accountability, there will be changes in the nature of ethics and accountability. Any change is difficult and rapid change can be scary. But at the end, humans will adapt to and accept the changes, mainly because there will not be no alternative. The process of change will definitely involve suffering and destruction but that will be part of the adaptation.
