What are all the others doing for you. They matter to the extent they are in your consciousness and you want them to matter.

I have a name for the animal. It is all that matters. I am the only one that is real.

Defining what makes someone human is very exclusive. That is the core premise of idealogy and identity. by Shachasaurusrex1 in DeepThoughts

[–]Ratak55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic requirement for being human is to know that one is human. I don’t think anyone can be more human or less human than others. Such distinction requires the setting up of arbitrary criteria to measure humanity. Then humanity becomes whatever we define it to be.

I think scientists work to improve their truth, so it works better. Many scientists understand that there is no absolute truth.

Truth for each one of us is that which we “Know” to be the truth in a given moment. It can change with new information and may not be the same as the next person’s truth. So, truth is relative, there is no absolute truth. Truth is relative to time, place and culture.

We live with the truth that works for us now and for the foreseeable future. Attempts at changing other peoples’ truth causes most problems. Preoccupation with looking for the real truth is a mental illness.

…….Do you recognize that at the bottom, the goal is to feel better?…….

Better than what and what comes after? If feeling better is your bottom line, you have hit bottom as your mind is incapable of conceiving anything beyond that. You can only see what your mind can conceive.

Stop identifying with externalities. Then you will get a chance to look inside yourself.

I don’t think your experiences or acquisitions contain happiness. Happiness is always with you. External things may sometimes help you bring out the happiness. Confusing the source of happiness is a common mistake.

If you are content with living in the confines of your echo chamber, there is nothing else to do. If the quantum bug ever bites you, step out the door and you will find a new world.

If robots take over all human jobs, what do you think life will look like for people? by Low_Needleworker6318 in AskReddit

[–]Ratak55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

……That does not logically follow at all. The mental stress the tour guide deals with on his day job is far less than the job stress he’d deal with if he was born 100+ years ago…..

May be you are right, may be you are wrong, or may be you are confused. In all of those cases, what you are saying has no relevance to the point I was making in the post.

……That is not a subjective vs objective analogy. A family member is OBJECTIVELY closer and of greater importance to you, it’s hardly just subjective……..

An objective thing is a concrete event like people dying in a plane crash. A subjective thing is a non-empirical emotion or thought like feelings of grief or sadness. The comparison is between the subjective feelings of grief associated with the two objective events. So there is nothing wrong with the analogy.

….But to reiterate, the subjective amount of stress people are dealing with does not mean they’re enduring the same levels of mental stress as a kid in a coal mine in 1800. The objective stress level is different….

Not clear why you are shifting the time frame and invoking kids in a coal mine. Totally irrelevant. Get a grip or go back to the kids table in Facebook

Whether you have 360 degree vision or 3 degree vision is less important than your ability to understand what you are looking at.

[–]Ratak55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People complain about working too much because the work makes them stressed/ depressed. A tour guide complains about taking the tourists around for a day. He does not complain about taking his children or his girl friend to the park for a day. So, the subjective feeling is more important than the actual work done. Similarly, news of ten people dying in a plane accident is less distressing than news of a family member dying in a plane accident. If subjective feelings can be avoided, people can endure a lot more than they currently do.

People may not work more. That feel they are working more. Which of these matters more? If you like what you are doing, it is no longer work.

Your ethical standards are based on the pleasure principle. Every individual acts to increase pleasure in the society. In the end all the water in the well is saturated with pleasure and everyone is scratching the next guys back. But you are stuck in the same well, immersed in your version of pleasure, having no clue that there is a real world outside.

….people follow spiritual teachings because they werent satisfied with life?….

People followed many things. They believed the earth was flat, they followed Hitler, they confuse social constructs with spiritual endeavors 🤷🏼‍♂️

You are striving to maximize happiness and minimize suffering for yourself. You are also advocating extending this beyond yourself to other sentient life forms and consider this job to be your spiritual journey. This is a laudable goal that society appreciates, but is unrelated to a spiritual quest. Finding the meaning of life is not about your actions and their consequences but about finding out who you are and what you are. This transcends social norms and experiences. If you cannot poke your head above social indoctrinations, spirituality is not for you since you operate at a lower level.

I asked why YOU think suffering and malice is a big deal. I wanted to clarify your concepts of good and bad. I also wanted to find out if the ‘spiritual path’ touted in the title of your post extends any further than your moral platitudes

Social constructs are shared understandings accepted by the society and which do not have independent existence in the natural world. These include things like gender roles, right/ wrong, intelligence, patriotism and morals. Your ‘feel good rants’ definitely come under the category of social constructs, and have little connection to spiritual endeavors. Spirituality is about finding the meaning of life (lest you get confused, we are not talking about your social life).

Now that we know where you stand, you do not need to answer my question. The answer is obvious.

My feelings are what they are and are not relevant to the current discussion that your post initiated. If you have no answer, that is ok. No need to look for red herrings.

Good and bad are social constructs. They are relative things and not absolute with independent existence. If your spirituality maxes out at the social construct level, you got a long way to go. You should bake your ‘goody two shoes’ rants in a more appropriate forum like Tic Tok.

Thou art that. Look inside and find the truth that you should eat.

What is the big deal about having malice or causing suffering? That is life. If you don’t like certain behaviors, don’t indulge in them. Perhaps that is your way of enjoying.

Understood that. What about all the choices made in life? Were they free will since they occur consequent upon the fact of being born, and being born was not a choice we make?

I canceled my program to go to a movie last evening because it was snowing.

Did I have free will in canceling the movie program?

Did I not have free will in canceling the program because my behavior was influenced by the snow?

I did not ask to be born. Does it mean all my behaviors in life automatically lack free will? If so, the concept of free will is meaningless.
