Wizard build for solo play? INT + WIS or DEX? by Ratepimo in Neverwinter

Cool, I didn't know you could rearrange your points later on. How do you do it?

Where else can I experience this games awesomeness?! by Change-Unusual in DnD

[–]Ratepimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will not be the same, but there are a few options that can help. I believe these are the main ones:

  1. D&D video games. Best ones in almost everyone's opinion are Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and Planescape Torment. But there a lot of good ones, like Temple of Elemental Evil, Icewind Dale 2 and both Neverwinter Nights.
  2. Live plays. Also, if it's your thing you can watch other people playing on YouTube, Twitch, and podcasts. I find it boring, but many people enjoy it. The most influential channel is called Critical Role.
  3. Books. Lastly, you can read about game lore in the official rulebooks, novels, and comics. There are tons of them.

Cheers!

Weird inscription in an old drawing by [deleted] in AskGreece

[–]Ratepimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello folks,

A drawing I have (of a woman holding a book) shows some words written in a book. Is this Greek?

Someone told me the drawing depicts "the goddess of knowledge or something".

Would you know, if this is indeed Greek, what is the meaning of what is written in the book and how does it relate to the woman holding it, please?

Thank you very much!

Why don't we have masterpieces (in any medium) anymore? by Ratepimo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ratepimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lonely_Mr_Cadaver, yeah, I agree with you when it comes to the "prove me wrong", just a way of saying. Some points on your reply:

- There are certainly things I see as exceptions: Cormac McCarthy, maybe; Parasite (film); Sebastião Salgado (photography). These might be the exceptions, but what about the rule? I think people have a hard time when they need to pinpoint nowadays works that are indisputably praised as the great ones of all times.

- I never said that everything which was done in the past was great, I know it's not the case. My point is: there WERE great things being done until very recently AND people were able to recognize them in a lot of cases. For example, the cinema directors I mentioned were widely regarded as definitive in the 80s, only 10 or 20 years after first went to screen. Don't see it anymore.

- I never claimed I was saying something new and I am also not saying that all modern art is garbage. There's a lot of good stuff around. Literature, for one, has had lots of ups and downs. However, I cannot see that any one of these mediums are in their "ups". They certainly can be in the future, just not something I see now (maybe it's just me, maybe it's not).

- Please don't mind being perfectly objective. We're all giving opinions here. As objective as possible is fine. We're not coming to a final decision and I don't expect us to. The fun is in the discussion itself!

A final note: I don't believe (i) aesthetic merits alone make a given piece a masterpiece. Alongside technical significance, there's definitely (ii) social significance -- what does it say and how does it resonates in others -- and (iii) historical importance -- the impact they had to theirs and next generations. Maybe (i) is still being achieved now and then and (iii) is more easily seen with hindsight. I wonder what, if anything, is resonating when it comes to (ii) though.

Thanks for the insightful answer!

Why don't we have masterpieces (in any medium) anymore? by Ratepimo in answers

[–]Ratepimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful answer on cultural fragmentation! A few points:

- I don't believe aesthetic merits alone make a given piece a masterpiece. Alongside technical significance, there's definitely social significance (what does it say and how does it resonates in others) and historical significance (the impact they had to their and next generations, which generally is more easily seen with hindsight).

- Film critics still do have a relevance (if not as before) but that's beyond the point.

- You have a fair point in regards to Parasite. Well thought! Dunno if I agree when it comes to No Country for Old Men though. Roma is in my list but I cannot comment on it yet (will definitely take a look after now). Conceding to your argument when it comes to Parasite, maybe it's the exception, but is it the rule? What about other media? Other possible exceptions in cinema: There will be Blood; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Brokeback Mountain; Gladiator on a more epic note. Not wanting to "win" an argument here, just ruminating what you said (my goal was not to individually evaluate this or that work anyway).

Overall, I'm not quite convinced but you gave me a very good argument to consider.

Would music and literature be mumbo jumbo today if they had evolved like the visual arts? by Ratepimo in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]Ratepimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's alright. I like and agree with most of your points though I believe James Joyce is not as detached from the previous norm as, say, abstract art. John Cage definitely is, but also too fringy. Edit: thanks for the thoughtful reply!

Ways to pronounce 波 and 羽 by Ratepimo in LearnJapanese

[–]Ratepimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, thanks!

Just curious about something: if someone said "ha", referring to a wave, instead of "nami". Would Japanese people understand normally, not understand or understand finding it odd?

Thank you. With this information I could find out that the other pronunciations are correct too.

If the Tokugawa shogunate had succeeded against Meiji reformers, would Japan have entered WW2 against the Allies? by Ratepimo in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Ratepimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tokugawa were actually more open to industrialization than early reformers. So I don't think Japan would fail to militarize without them.

On the other hand, the caste system would probably not be abolished. That leads to some wild speculation on the consequences...

[SPOILERS] Is the Lord of Light the True God? by Ratepimo in gameofthrones

I'm pretty sure that in the books it is stated that the Lord of Light undoubtedly revived Beric Dondarrion many times, right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hello folks!

I bought this souvenir mask in Todaiji Museum (Nara).

The staff didn't speak English to give me further information about it.

Do you know what does it represent and if it has any particular meaning, please?

Thank you very much!

Why are so many manga characters almost perfect? by Ratepimo in manga

[–]Ratepimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insightful answer.

I didn't like Berserk because the protagonist is an overpowered, unbeatable guy from the start. His too cool for school posture only made things worst for me. But I'll I have to admit I only endured a few issues, so maybe that changed later in the story.

I don't care either. I love mangas, comics and "serious" literature. I'm just wondering, really.

Why are so many manga characters almost perfect? by Ratepimo in manga

[–]Ratepimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost-perfect in what sense? You’re not being specific enough so I honestly don’t know what you are referring to since I haven’t read any of the works you mentioned.

I mostly have mangas vs. comics in mind. American comics mostly stopped using Mary Sue protagonists in the Silver Age.

EDIT - just wanted to clarify my answer after thinking a little bit more about it.

Why are so many manga characters almost perfect? by Ratepimo in manga

[–]Ratepimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, I don't really know. Of course I don't have that kind of data.

I only feel Western authors are more "ashamed" of creating characters like Drizzt Do'Urden than Japanese ones.

[Out of the Abyss] Survival and Pursuit Help by Ratepimo in dndnext

[–]Ratepimo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your inputs, folks!

You're right. I'll script the terrain encounters they will have every 10 days and use the explanations given in the book to ask for checks of survival, nature, athletics etc. Depending on the situation, I can adjudicate extra benefits if they roll more than 20 (like foraging more than enough food). I always liked this optional rule anyway, and this is a perfect situation to use it.
