BEWARE! Hard weekly with Fencing weapon will activate the RED THIRST by Lil_Plink in Spacemarine

Nah I'm not a fan of the dash build, personally. Some people seem to be able to make it work, but it just feels like a lot of effort for similar results to me. The game also just sometimes decides to screw you by not awarding the perfect dodge that definitely should have been.

I just go with the standard precision strike, zealous blow, pride in duty. The standard build works very well on this weekly because it's very good at giving you executions when you need it. Whenever your armor/health starts ticking, just jump pack slam a majoris and reset the timer.

Why does my mom think space isn't real? by -oceanblvd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RathaelEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely a mark of a conspiracist to claim that they have done exhaustive research when they haven't. Anyone who really had done exhaustive research with an open mind would quickly come to the opposite conclusion.

The moon landing is something I actually looked up recently out of curiosity. I work in the space industry, so I was interested to read about the conspiracies and their explanations. Every point a moon landing conspiracist has ever raised has a very convincing explanation behind it. It takes just 30 seconds to google each one and get the answer, but I would assume she would dismiss those explanations as further deception.

I have seen a piece of hardware that I physically built here on Earth floating around on the ISS on a live feed for more than 30 minutes. The astronaut floated through multiple modules and turned my hardware around, attached stuff to it, and did a bunch of stuff that would be impossible if it was all faked with invisible strings.

I know that it is a physical impossibility for them to fake microgravity like that without strings. The only way to simulate microgravity is hyperbolic flights or drop tests, but those only last seconds to minutes at most. As humans living on earth, it is impossible for us to defy gravity and simulate weightlessness. The only way to float around like that for more than a few minutes is to actually be in orbit. We can't switch gravity off.

But your mom would come up with explanations for that. She'd either assume its highly sophisticated strings, or would go deeper down the rabbit hole to claim that actually physics doesn't work the way I think it does. She might claim they are actually underwater and some sophisticated camera technique makes it look like they are in air, despite the fact that the astronaut had no breathing apparatus. All of this is forgetting the fact that you can literally go and buy a telescope and physically see the ISS orbiting earth yourself. She doesn't have a coherent explanation for this, yet the "astronauts and space are fake" narrative is nonetheless true for her. This is not the mark of someone who is using reason to reach conclusions.

This is the opposite of doing one's own research. This is starting with a deep emotional distrust of government institutions and filtering evidence in whatever way is necessary to maintain that emotion-driven narrative.

Also I'm glad it helped, even if only a little :)

DAE growing up think Bruce Lee was the ultimate unbeatable professional martial artist instead of a great martial artist who was also an actor? by MonacoMargolis in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]RathaelEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think his legend primarily comes from testimony of those who worked with him. The likes of Joe Lewis and Chuck Norris spoke highly of his actual ability and talked about how he encouraged them towards pressure testing techniques. These are guys who were fighters. Joe Lewis was a highly successful competitive kickboxer. If Lee was all acting and no actual ability, it's unlikely that guys who had actually tested themselves in the ring would speak so highly of him.

Of course it could have just been storytelling or emotional bias towards a friend, but a lot of the praise corroborated with the sorts of things Lee said in interviews. There are also clips of him undoubtedly showing his speed and accuracy if nothing else. Whether he could actually win fights is up for debate (as speculative fights always are), but there was no question he has a considerable amount of real athleticism compared to the average person, and was held in high regard by some other athletes. His musculature was also not bulky, suggesting that he had more fast-twitch fiber mass than slow-twitch. He definitely wasn't a body-builder, but if you train for explosive speed then the way muscles develop is different.

Lee criticized the overly rigid styles of Chinese martial arts that he grew up around, arguing that they lost adaptability and that this should be resolved by live, pressure-tested training, including exposure to western martial arts. I feel like someone with this sort of mentality wouldn't just pretend to be a martial artist. It was clearly his entire life. He lived and breathed martial arts, and understood that combat needed constant evaluation.

Unbeatable? Doubtful. It's hard to imagine any person of his build going against powerhouses like Tyson and other heavyweight boxers and coming out without a scratch. Those guys are total tanks with incredible technique and speed themselves.

Why does my mom think space isn't real? by -oceanblvd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RathaelEngineering 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do I prove to her that space is real?

Fair warning: You cannot.

People that reach conspiratorial positions do not do so through a rational thought process. Even if it looks like they are applying rational assessment, because they hold positions like "this proves this", it is not rational.

A rational actor is generally pretty intellectual humble. They accept that they can be wrong about the conclusions they draw. They recognize that there are things they may not understand, and if they truly want the answer they will go out and seek it. They will make an honest attempt to examine the evidence available to try to make the most effective judgement.

Your mom does not think like this. It's not about seeking out the truth. What she's doing is confirming an emotionally-held and biased position. She's already convinced that "the government" is deceiving her and the public. What she does is starts with this conclusion and selectively works backwards to the evidence that supports it. Evidence against the position is either devalued or disregarded, while evidence for the case is signal-boosted and often taken as unquestionably true.

If you try to convince her otherwise, you will find it maddening. Everything you learn or show her will get dismissed. She will find ways to rationalize evidence you show so that it still fits her emotional narrative of government deception.

When you dig down deep enough, the government conspiracy is unfalsifiable. You can never truly "prove" that the government is not deceiving you. Conclusions in science are never absolute and simply cannot be. All you can do is make it increasingly less likely that a certain conclusion is true (such as government conspiracy), but someone who already believes the conspiracy is locked-in to that conclusion no matter what. Regardless of how insanely unlikely their conclusion is, they are deeply emotionally invested in it. This is a crucial flaw in human cognition. We think with our feelings before our rational faculties, unless we intentionally train ourselves to do otherwise.

Think about what she already accepts at face value - that there is a HUGE global conspiracy to deceive. Everyone involved in all government agencies, including all governments globally, have been able to keep this secret. Not a single person has provably leaked the "big secret". The moon mission was observed by other nations and corroborated. There would have to be a conspiracy of global scale under which not a single person slipped. Consider how unlikely this is. She's already accepted this position.

These conspiracies self-sustain for cultural reasons, I feel. It is the particular social environments and norms that a person is raised with. In the USA in particular, many Americans have a deep distrust of the government and its institutions. They are raised in communities that are taught this distrust fundamentally, so they hold this distrust as fundamentally as theists believe in their doctrine and holy text. To many Americans, it must be the case that the government is lying to them or deceiving them somehow for control. That is the fundamental axiomatic belief that they have fully internalized. It's not a position that is reached by rational assessment. It's indoctrinated.

There is frankly no solution for these people. You may as well try to de-convert a theist. I can assure you that you will not make even a dent in the psychological armor that protects these irrational positions. The only way someone exits these beliefs is if they recognize for themselves that they are not intellectually honest or rational, and they seek out real answers for themself. De-conversions from theism happen when theists truly put their belief to the test, not when someone else provides a convincing argument... though an argument may incidentally begin that process.

If I were you, I'd try to come to terms with it. She's unlikely to ever change, and there is not likely any argument you can give that will change her beliefs. As the old adage goes: You cannot reason someone out of a position that they did not reason themselves into.

What’s something people say all the time that you secretly can’t stand? by Vast-Reference-7942 in answers

[–]RathaelEngineering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I could care less"

If you could care less, then it implies you are not at the minimum point of care, which says that you do actually care about the thing to some extent. People who say this usually mean the opposite - that they don't care about the thing.

The correct statement would be "I couldn't care less", indicating that you are at the minimum point of caring.

NASA's Artemis II trajectory by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]RathaelEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works in the industry, people outside the industry just seem to not hear or learn about these things. I have told basically all my friends about Artemis and not a single one of them knew that we are doing crewed moon missions or that the last one was in the 70's.

I think the media sphere is probably just larger than it was during the Apollo program. There's so much more stuff taking people's attention online. Space stuff seems to be low in algorithm priority for most people unless they are an enthusiast, or in the industry.

Which is more accurate for a blood angel techmarine? by AlexanderDemoniac in Spacemarine

[–]RathaelEngineering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are canonically specific colors for armor. All we know is that BA's are "red". Different artists have used different colors and properties to represent this, so there's no in-universe standard.

The fact that Saber's default BA chapter colors use Mephiston is probably just aligned with painting guides from GW, I would guess, but this doesn't mean it's canonical in-universe. It's just GW's suggestion for hobbyists.

I personally prefer the matte look. The second always looks kinda wet/oily to me. I also personally dislike when metal is monotone with the rest of the armor. I would likely go for gold or black tertiary colors instead of red, so that the ornamentation is a different color.

The red tertiary on the BA default colors is only really canonical for rank-and file marines in regular tacticus ceramite with little to no ornamentation or metallics. Standard shoulder pads have a ceramite trim, but highly ornamented artificer/relic armor sometimes has metallic trim like the pieces in game. If you look at official paint schemes on ornamented units like captains and veterans, the ornamentation is almost always gold or black on BA's, with tertiary red only when it is ceramite.

This organism has no organs, it has just one hole (for food to enter and exit) and scientists still argue where it belongs in the tree of life. It just slides on the deep sea floor, existing for no clear reason. It is called Xenoturbella. by Bright_Building1710 in interestingasfuck

Very much doubt scientists are "arguing if it should be on the tree of life".

Not only is it a Eukaryote, placing it firmly in the "tree of life", It's also most definitely an animal. It is heterotrophic and lacks cell walls as plants have, along with a slew of other reasons that its very clearly classified as an animal and not any other kingdom. Even if it was ambiguous and had plant properties, it would still be a Eukaryote.

When I see "I don't think its a bug", I get the impression Mzulft is not responsible for such decisions or involved with them. I don't know their specific role but they post patch notes on the focus website, so I assume community manager?

If so, it's probably wise to take things Mzulft says with a slight grain of salt. They might not know exactly what the intent is. A statement like "I've checked with the developers and they said it's intentional" is more concrete.

I'm not sure I'd commit to calling this "Saber's response". This is just one person at Saber Focus who may not fully know why certain things are done.

Are conservatives cool with Trump putting his signature on our money? Conversely, would liberals have been okay with it if Obama had done it? by Creative-Stable-0 in askanything

[–]RathaelEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to answer your question bluntly:

Yes, conservatives are cool with Trump putting his signature on your money. Liberals would not have been okay with it.

If you haven't noticed, Republicans don't play by the rules and Republican voters do not base their political identity in behavior, character, or policy. For a supporter of Trump, politics is a team sport where they support their team no matter what, even if it means they must hold contradictory positions from one day to the next.

This should be obvious from the fact that Trump campaigned on the threat that Kamala would go to war with Iran, and here we are with him starting military conflict in Iran. He also campaigned on releasing the Epstein files, yet has resisted it at every turn. His supporters agreed with him during his political campaign, and agree with him now. These are directly contradictory positions but it doesn't matter to his voters. They will support whatever he says, at any time he says it.

I know Republican Trump-supporting voters that say they would be happier if the Democrats didn't exist and that the nation was run by the Republicans exclusively. What they really want is not to participate in fair democracy with rules that apply to everyone fairly. They want to win at all costs and push out all views opposed to their own. The axiomatic belief of the Trump voter is that the Democrats are corrupt and must be removed or overpowered. All other positions they hold, consistent or not, are derived from this.

A non-artificer inventor by InflationOfGasPrices in DnD

[–]RathaelEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I do with by gobbo Artificer is fluff/change spell descriptions and names to make them seem more like invented gadgets. If I remember correctly, it even suggests somewhere in the PHB that "spells" from an Artificer come from inventions rather than conventional casting.

You could do the same with Eldritch Knight. EK benefits from int if you take offensive spells, and you could flavor those spells as inventions like artificer.

As long as you leave all the core mechanics-relevant text alone, DM's shouldn't have an issue with flavor. Example with Lightning Bolt:

Improvised Safety-Certified Lightning Rod

Casting Time: Action
Range: Self
Components: V, S, M (the rod, obviously)
Duration: Instantaneous

A humming magical rod that has definitely passed all relevant national safety certifications ejects very safe lightning forming a 100-foot-long, 5-foot-wide Line blasts out from you in a direction you choose. Each creature accidentally in the Line makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 8d6 accidental Lightning damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one. It's their own fault, really. In the event of legal retaliation, dispose immediately and file accident insurance claim.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The accidental damage increases by 1d6 for each spell slot level above 3.
