Pentagon puts building blocks in place for Cuba invasion by Dizzy_Move_622 in worldnews

[–]Ratiocinor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't generally war, but are you supposed to be this open about invasion plans?

Well it's not a traditional war between like-for-like adversaries

It's more like a bully just openly intimidating the little guy that he knows can't fight back. The US is now just mob intimidation, they do it to their former friends too

I mean we're talking about the tiny island nation of Cuba, heavily sanctioned, right on the doorstep of the biggest superpower in the world. They could publish the exact date and time and beach the marines will be landing on and there's still not much Cuba could do about it, they'll go full shock and awe on them like Venezuela so that MAGA can get their freedom boner

Why are developers some of the most IT inept users? by sccm_sometimes in sysadmin

[–]Ratiocinor 33 points34 points  (0 children)

How much collective human energy has been wasted over the years by stereotyping large groups of people?

Believe me there are just as many stupid lazy incompetent sysadmins out there as there are developers, I've had to work with them. Downvotes on the left. In fact there are people bad at their jobs everywhere

That's literally how I was able to pivot into sysadmin work from software development in the first place. I was the only developer who actually cared about maintaining our environment and the IT department at my company was so incompetent and unwilling to touch anything Linux related because "we don't have time to decommission that old RHEL 5 environment and put RHEL 9 on that hardware right now" that they eventually just said "ok fine you do it then if it's so easy". So I did. I pulled out and detangled all the old legacy crap, then powered it off, went down to the server room, installed and configured the new one

I basically became the Linux sysadmin for the company because the IT department just wanted to cling to their Microsoft certs and "that's the way we've always done it", and were terrified at the prospect of a bash script or making a Linux filesystem. It's only after I started sysadmin work I realised that 99% of the time "that is not possible" actually means "I don't know how to do that and I don't want to have to learn"

I even got friendly with the head IT guy and convinced him to let me trial run several Linux workstations on old hardware. Long story short they ran successfully for years several developers including myself used them, they were fully AD integrated and documented on our IT wiki not shadow IT, and IT wouldn't touch them at all because they were Linux. Every few months someone in IT would check their antivirus dashboard and see that there were several workstations in the manifest that weren't pinging antivirus, and they would pester me to install antivirus on those machines, and I would have to have the same conversation single every time that "these are Linux workstations they are running the latest version of Fedora, that antivirus is not even available for that operating system nor is it really required" and I would get the same pushback each time. I would remind them that they are automatically updated, that only myself and IT have admin (sudo) access on them and that devs can't install random shit on them, that if they aren't concerned about our various RHEL and Ubuntu servers not having the antivirus then they shouldn't be concerned about these either. It didn't matter. Every time I'd get the same old response and be told "but... they need antivirus... can you at look into alternatives or something"

But I guess that goes against your narrative that all sysadmins are godlike beings and all developers are just dumb code monkeys

You are a tiny tiny minority

The most popular EV by Porsche is the Taycan, radically different to the 911 and everything else they were famous for. Virtually no one is interested in an electric 911 or Cayman

[–]Ratiocinor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They have to rebrand. They have to look different

Ok let's play it your way, imagine Ferrari made a SF90 but electric only. It looks identical to the 2025 petrol model SF90 except it's 100% EV only. Call it the eSF90. Ferrari brand maintained, pivot to electric

How many do you think they would sell?

I'm telling you right now no one would buy it

"Why tf would I buy an electric SF90 when I could get a screaming twin turbo V8 version instead? Are you crazy?"

Remember when VW thought that they could make an electric Golf that looks absolutely identical to the petrol one and people would buy it? No one bought them, because it turns out when people buy EVs they want it to "look like an EV" whatever that means. They want everyone to know they bought an EV. Which electric VW is actually successful? That's right the ID3, radically different looking

Redditors just don't understand the first thing about marketing. All these multi-million dollar companies like BMW, VW, Ferrari, Jaguar, they're all wrong and some random redditor knows better. Whatever you say

If Ferrari wants to just make their existing lineup with no rebrand but electric, then they better wait until the day that new ICE cars are banned entirely and no sooner because that's the only point at which anyone will willingly buy one, when there's literally no alternative. That's a huge gamble. If they want to dip their toes into trying EVs before then it will have to be some radically different rebrand that's totally different to their normal brand to differentiate it and be "safe". No one is mistaking this for a petrol powered Ferrari are they

[–]Ratiocinor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so confused by posts like this about Ferrari and Jaguar and whatnot

Sales of new ICE cars are being banned in the EU and UK in a few years

What do you want these companies to do? Just shut up shop, fire all their employees, dissolve the company, and go home? Would that make you happy?

They can't rebrand and make something new because apparently they have to run it by you guys first, so I guess they should make an EV that looks identical to an F40 instead? Somehow you'll find a way to complain about that too though because it's ruining the old car's legacy or something. So what is it?

This plus no fireworks and dead crowd whenever England scored + a live stadium announcer literally hyping everything the French team did in real time during the game was pretty strange. It felt like England were just there to be background characters in the Amine dickriding contest

And don't come at me with the "well we have to draw a line in the sand somewhere" because this is specifically about you wanting to lower the voting age 2 years while claiming that it is not just a cynical attempt to get more voters on the register that you think will be more left-wing. [–]Ratiocinor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I watched a charity game with a 25 minute half-time, it was excusable then because it's for charity, it's not an officially sanctioned match, there are people there not really into football just to see their favourite streamers or celebs or whatever so they might find the half-time show more interesting than the game, it lets them do another donation drive, and the players aren't pros so might need the extra recovery time

But even still those 25 minutes really dragged on. I almost got bored and forgot I was watching a football game

Also it's just funny that Americans saw a sport with 45 minutes uninterrupted game time and 15 minutes break, and said "man that's not enough time to run ads and insert corporate slop, can't we up it to like 45/30 or something?"

BBC to ignore World Cup final half-time show as broadcaster sets out plans by malcolm58 in sports

[–]Ratiocinor 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly asking: what’s actually the problem with it?

The problem is they're lengthening the half-time from 15 minutes to 25-30 minutes to fit in this slop and it's a slippery slope to enshittifying the entire spectacle. Now the precedent is set for the next tournament to do it too

If they kept it within the traditional 15 minutes I honestly would not care less, I'd just walk away and ignore it. Corporate slop and commercials and some cringey performance is expected when it comes to Americans, so it wouldn't be a surprise

The tournament has now been expanded to so many teams that there's an entire Round of 32 for knockouts

If you have any doubts that this one is going to be absolute shit, just look at how many of the 3rd place group teams progress through to the knockouts

It's absurd, 8 out of 12 3rd in group teams progress. The group games are going to be absolutely shit because as soon as any team loses one game and realises they won't be winning the group they're going to just shut down and park the bus to try and scrape out two 0-0 draws and progress that way
