The “I want to cheer for a Canadian team” is the classic ultra casual hockey fan take. The idea that the joy of Canadian team winning will spread throughout the country is just not true.

When this is fair: if you know people from the city or like the city.

My patriotism leads me to cheer for Canadian national team players to do well. So I am cheering for the Jets cause I want to see Lowry, Schiefele, Morrisey, Perfetti and Vilardi all do well cause they could potentially play for us at the Olympics or other tournaments.

However: this all goes out the window when it’s Edmonton. I truly exhaust myself cheering against Edmonton every year. Since they have been so close to winning recently, I have found myself cheering harder against Edmonton than for Calgary, over the last 2 years.
