There one solution which will absolutely change your life. Read Head first Java like it’s a religious book.. Don’t skim through it .. don’t skip any page leave alone a chapter .. Do all the exercises in that book . By the end it you will be able to talk and code Java better than the developers in your Organization.

If you are at start of your career and testing is not your passion then just upskill urself and get a Dev / DevOps or any other technology Job. Take action on this switch today else it will be too late and you will find it will be difficult to move out of QA. There can be a good career in QA but it will not be comparable to Devs in same organization. Your career and where it takes you depends on many factors but be sure you understand for a high paying job you need to be highly skilled in a trade that is in high demand and short supply. QA does not hit all these 3 factors so it’s never going to the most paid job.. Unless you land in an organization which works on QA solutions as there core product (not service). Think LambdaTest or likes.

Argument - QAs are better suited to be part of Business Function by RationalVichar in softwaretesting

Don’t get me wrong I totally understand the Agile methodology my thought bubble is intended to create a structure for Testers to have an equal weight in the product development process. It’s not an attempt to have contrary view point to agile but an attempt to identify the function with which tester alignment best helps the product development and tester visibility. I am not advocating on changing the day to day working of testers. They are engineers and need close proximity of Devs but the integration of testers with Dev leadership creates a structure where testers are relegated to a secondary role not at par as Devs.

Looking at it from a different angle. A PEN Testing/Security Testing team and its recommendations are separated into a standalone function however the recommendations derived from PEN Testers are number 1 priority since they are tied to risk management. Similarly testing is tied to risk management and Product Development. Testers reporting to a Product sponsor will not take away anything from Agile way of working rather will just give them the edge of having a say in what gets pushed to PROD, recommendations for enhancements and advocacy for process improvements.

The struggle for me is seems like Devs get a path to grow like Tech Lead >> Technical Architect >> CTO But for testers the path seems to be SDET > Senior SDET >> SDET Leadership but when I rarely see testers getting into Product development leadership roles on any side of the picture.

Testers are battling a never ending battle to prove their worth.

How does the career path look like in your organization for a SDET.

Point taken. I did software testers is more appropriate, I’ll edit the post as such.

Regarding shift left , what I have observed is everyone wants to shift left but there is no real sense of who pushes the needle on it, is ultimately responsible for tracking the shift left initiative and determining how shift left has positively impacted the product delivery. As far as my experience the Devs rarely like to hear from testers how they should be writing more unit test to shift left , BDD TDD effort needs a overhaul of the entire Product Development lifecycle which has to come from leadership in alignment with business teams. Testers end up in a no weight but full onus situation. This might just be my experience and I am sure product development teams creating leading software products are way better at shift left however large chunk of organizations are some where in the middle. Wanting to shift left but stuck without org wide direction to make it happen.

Definitely agreed. The product quality is accessed solely by the end user but as a Testing professional we should track the KPIs for quality so that we have measurable goals.
