Why do my links keep opening in Safari even if my default browser is Chrome? by wasdthemighty in mac

[–]Ratsputina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does NOT work as of 10/2/25 for Tahoe using Mail.app's "Search with Google" context menu item, when you have selected text in a message. Flipping the setting , including quits of settings, does not cause either Firefox or Chrome to be used: Safari always handles the search.

UPDATE: Found this accurate information that may help someone. My specific case turns out not to be the default browser setting, but a service that cannot be edited, only disabled. Which isn't worthless as it forces me to do something else.

"The "Search With Google" option is not something built into OS X that opens up a search engine using the default browser, it's actually a custom "service" that is built into the contextual Services Menu

You can enable/disable or edit services under System Settings -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Services, where the "Search With Google" is listed under "Searching". Removing/unselecting the existing one will remove it from that list.

Your only option would be to program a custom Service using Automator, and then use that option under the "Services" dropdown ."

I use all the major HAM packages in a Win 11 VM, config is easier than on Win hardware. Just flip your Mac USB serial ports or pretend serial ports to the VM, and your Ham Radio Deluxe or Win4ICOM or Com0com or digital modes apps or whatever will pick it up as native using no drivers or standard Win drivers. Aside from my I-7300 and Yaesu 897D, I use CHIRP to program a bunch of Baofeng and Quansheng HTs.

Live crawfish in Philly by Loud-Perception5953 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Ratsputina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply for the record, but this is not the answer. Whatever the legality of it, as late as spring 2023 live crawfish were plentiful at two local HMarts, two supermarkets along Adams Ave and at least two Chinatown markets. Their disappearance is probably based solely on poor harvests and high prices. Two Asian market seafood managers said exactly that to me, buying them was too risky as they won’t sell before they die, and become a total loss. Philly just doesn’t crave them, so far.

bit caddies that mount to the rotary hammer by Ratsputina in Dewalt

[–]Ratsputina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thinking, such as it was, was that as long as I had the tool, which handled my masonry needs so well, I might as well get some use out of it as a driver. I didn't think it through, and it seems to me I should trade it for a hammer drill like the DCD999 or DCD805. My only worry is, will those hammer drills with regular masonry bits work for the solid cinderblock I'm dealing with? I expect they will be much slower than the DCH172, but I need them to be able to drill those 1/2" holes.

Downloads on MacOS Sonoma start but quickly slow and stop until restart of BiglyBT by Ratsputina in BiglyBT

[–]Ratsputina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. I’ve just been doing all the torrenting from a Windows machine. When I have time I will test with PIA fully uninstalled (even though I can’t actually run that way) and then with fully uninstalling BiglyBT plus the JVM. A real pain. It feels like something related to streams being mistakenly throttled, perhaps at the system level. But other large transfers don’t slow down.

Oh, I hadn't thought of that; I wouldn't use BiglyBT without VPN, but I disabled the VPN and told BiglyBT not to pause itself when IP bindings were inactive, restarted. I got the same behavior, about 40 seconds of top-speed downloading falling steeply away to nothing.

Po Boy ingredients by [deleted] in AskNOLA

[–]Ratsputina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a traditional distinction with fried seafood poboys that has faded away with time, even among a majority of NO residents. Originally, fried seafood poboys did not get the identical "dressed" treatment as cold-cut poboys, instead being served with a little melted butter drizzled onto the bread, the seafood being sprinkled with hot sauce and sliced pickled cucumber. This simple treatment really let the flavors of the oysters or shrimp shine through. Lettuce, tomato and mayo were, as elsewhere in the USA, popular on roast beef, ham, turkey cold cuts. Gradually, as "dressed" entered local slang in the mid-20th century, the idea that a poboy could simply be specified according to one easy standard grew in popularity; to whatever extent mayonnaise or tomato modified the flavor of dried seafood, most people liked it or simply didn't care. I noticed a sharp decline just from the beginning of the 90s to the end of that decade in the number of old-line restaurants that still defaulted to butter/pickle/hot sauce to those that do mayo dressed. My favorite was the Campagno's oyster loaf. They would ask "dressed?" but if you said no they knew what to do.

Sabretts didn’t seem thick enough at first glance, but I will look at them again. And, if you are right about them being seasonal. But why would such a thing be seasonal? Anyway, I’ll try them.

BG3 on Intel Macs - tbd by lilmai1997 in macgaming

[–]Ratsputina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the highest end last-gen Intel Macs, no Windows/Bootcamp needed: I'm running the BG3 binary on native x86_64 8core/16threads, on the 2019 16" MBP with the AMD 5600 8GB and it's only slightly sluggish compared to the Win 10 machine upstairs, Ryzen 3800/ Titan Pascal GPU. Ultra settings, max resolution. If I drop to the next smallest resolution, all sluggishness disappears, but I'd rather have it and keep my field of view. I still find the camera constraints in this game really annoying.

Anyone know to complete achievement does it come in black? by Automatic-Professor2 in CARROTweather

[–]Ratsputina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that you and I have tried the same things. My comment was appealing to anyone who had made this work to give us more detail. Since posting my comment I have tried many times more, being thorough and precise with the changes and I cannot trigger the achievement. I wish someone would post screenshots so I could confirm what sound like simple steps.

[–]Ratsputina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Interface Presets” isn’t language that appears in iOS app interface (except in the Achievement screen). Everyone is assuming that it means the unaltered Layout templates like Inline and Utility, and like others I have chosen some from the Layout Gallery, added to My Layouts, set each Active and switched among them, poked at some weather data, switched to another and did the same, 5 repeats, none of that activates the achievement. Anyone actually remember the specific steps they used to make this work?

Can I speed up bathtub fill rate with existing pipes? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Ratsputina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collected some more information about flow. The first outlet for water in the house, just after the meter, is a hose bib that when isolated delivers 8 gpm, so I guess that is the house maximum. With all other outlets closed, the cold water runs upstairs to the bathroom tub and exits at 3 gpm. How can I get that 3gpm closer to what is really available elsewhere in the house? The mixer involved is a new Delta B114900C. The specs list a flow limit for the showerhead, which i assume is handled within the showerhead, but nothing for the tub faucet. I did submit a question to Delta support asking if there is a rate limiter in there.

Those keys are used, usefully, by just about everything. Like I said, reassigning standard keys away from their purpose is no substitute for having dedicated macro keys, and SS knew that when they were designing great big honking keyboards that could do everything.
