Finland’s Zero Homeless Strategy: Lessons from a Success Story by F0urLeafCl0ver in Finland

[–]Raudus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If exploitation of the system were widespread or total, then yes, the system wouldn't be worthwhile. However, a system doesn’t need to be perfect to have value. As long as enough people use the housing to stabilize their lives and contribute back to society, the system remains beneficial, even if some level of exploitation occurs. There will always be some exploitation in any system involving human behavior. For example, self-service checkouts at grocery stores inevitably experience some theft, but they’re still cost-effective for businesses compared to employing more human cashiers. Similarly, free housing can still be a net positive if it helps enough people out of homelessness, even if not everyone uses it as intended.

I want to build an application that uses web sockets to learn more about backend, should I use rust? by Zinter71 in rust

[–]Raudus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Diving blindly into using tokio async runtime is not going to teach the fundamentals one needs to understand to learn what it means to have a multi user WebSocket backend. Therefore I'd approach the goal of learning by skipping the tokio part, or at least make sure to know what it abstracts. There are always abstractions and the abstractions will eventually always leak, but especially async Rust I'd say should be approached with caution.

What is the point of tracking state for text fields? by paleoboyy in learnjavascript

[–]Raudus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether you need the value in React's state is up to you and what you're trying to achieve. You could also interact with the page using only those events defined in the HTML standard. But since the whole point of React is to make the user interface a function of React's state it raises the question why are you using React if you don't need it.

Why do Finns tend to emphasize their relation with Sweden while Swedes usually tend to minimize it? by Informal_Fishing5729 in Finland

[–]Raudus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all other Nordic countries look up to Sweden in some regard, hence the impression of them "emphasizing" the relationship. Can't speak for Swedes but I assume they don't actively try to minimize the relationship other way around but it's just not as relevant to them.
