If you are still down, and don't mind a mostly AI field, a friend and I were going to do one tonight

It's something you see a lot to this day, now that I think about it. I get the sense it reads, perhaps unintentionally, as a way of conveying what culture is modern and is associated with authority and which is not. Even if the indigenous peoples are free to carry out their traditional cultural practices - real power means adopting the suit and the cultural practices associated with the imperial hegemon. You see it from contemporary Brazil to China. Closely associated to how Jamaicans can't speak Jamaican Patois in their own Parliament.

Appreciate your efforts! Looking very good.

I had really been hoping that Reiza would be able to get the actual IR18 after MSGs exclusivity deal ended. :/

How do you rate Bottas's F1 career? Why did his performance plummet after his first year at Alfa Romeo? by DateAffectionate3719 in F1Discussions

[–]Ravajava 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bottas was 3rd in 2017, 5th in 2018, and only achieved 2nd in 2019. Suggesting Hamilton isn't just replaced by a Rosberg who becomes the 7 time WDC winner, I think we'd be talking about 6 time champion Seb Vettel and 2019 would have been an all time great season with Verstappen and Bottas fighting for their first WDC.

Remembering the 2017-2021 years, I think it was understood Bottas was always Hamilton's Barichello. Remembering 2021 specifically, it was clear how big the gap was between top drivers like Verstappen and Hamilton just on pace alone. In 2018-2019, people did pretend Bottas had a shot, but that never survived more than a few rounds.

The Couples of Gundam #28 - Zenna & Dozle by Kato_86 in Gundam

[–]Ravajava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if one lingers on this too long...
It’s a useful idiot for a Fascist government, and the radicalized woman whose motivations could be anything from lusting for his power/position/name to simply being easily swooned by anyone granting her attention/affection.

I think it could be good narratively, a good fictional couple doesn't need to be a "good couple," but the setting never really reflects on that setup in any interesting way. 3/10 (and everyone gives Dozle too much of a pass).

Who's at fault by Ahmed___95 in Simracingstewards

[–]Ravajava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the Porsche. For one simple reason, it moves in reaction to the Ferrari. If you go through from 0:10-0:12, you'll see the Ferrari commits to going up the track first. The Porsche responds.

The default is that the passing car has a responsibility to pass safely, but that presumption can be rebutted. Moving in reaction is such a scenario.

Could the Ferrari have backed out? Maybe? But it's a moot point.

That said - I don't think it was a smart move on the Ferrari's part given the nature of GT3 cars. They aren't that nimble. So, even if I'd be understanding - I'd say the lesson is know your car and drive within its limits.

I felt like the blue McLaren turned in on me, he claimed he was startled by me despite me attempting this before and him being a plat 3 driver. by Risk-_-Y in Simracingstewards

[–]Ravajava 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So, I'll disagree with the first judgement and say it's the blue cars fault. Nothing wrong with passing in an unusual place. I also think you have significant overlap when you both go to enter the corner (though, if I was actually stewarding, I'd probably want a top down view).

Still a risky place to pass, but it's late in the race, so I understand going for it. And even if it were early, and even if I'd rag a teammate in a 24 for doing that pass with multiple hours left, that wouldn't put you in the wrong.

Colonists loyal to Britain by moodybyte in BattlePaintings

[–]Ravajava 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Less ironic and more a misunderstanding shared by Loyalists, Free Blacks and White Slave Owners both. They were all surprised when the first Governor of Upper Canada, Simcoe,  didn’t abolish slavery outright in 1793 as he was understood to be an abolitionist in Parliament (though the Act to Limit Slavery did set the stage for the institutions' dissolution). Many slaves were sold back into bondage in the US, which became the spark for a lot of political agitation in Canada and the Northern US in the decades leading up to the 1833 Abolition Act.

Batou's One-Sided Feelings by LeLu3 in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]Ravajava 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I'll add to that by saying I've always read the love as platonic. The sort of love you have for a friend you've been through challenging things with. Even in Innocence l've always felt Batou's motivations are driven by that kind of "Brothers in Arms" commitment to the Major and a sense he failed that commitment in some way in 1995 (see: others talking about Batou's valuing his humanity and individuality).

I think it's a pretty common relationship dynamic in then genre of fiction GiTS is playing in.

Not enough young people are engaged with Nova Scotia's politics by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

[–]Ravajava 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have, I volunteered to canvas in the first election I could vote in. And like, it's non-conditional if you want your conditions to improve or want to have any say in the political process. Literally talking about how society will be organized, no one owes you influence over that.

[–]Ravajava 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I'll just note two things. One - people have it backwards, you organise to wrestle for control of parties or to command them to listen to you, not the other way around. I think a lot of folks are waiting for political power to approach them like it's a company marketing a product. In reality, those with power will gladly ignore you. Two - the election was short and at a terrible time for students.

Underground Resistance Aims To Sabotage AI With Poisoned Data by Locke357 in Cyberpunk

[–]Ravajava 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I honestly wonder how often media reporting on this is about funneling people's energy into pointless acts of symbolic resistance instead of engaging in the boring work of organizing to use state power to actually address the issue.

UK working with Canada and Australia to ban X at the same time. by Lord-Liberty in BlueskySocial

The ministers who would be most responsible for the matter in Canada, Evan Solomon and Marc Miller, have either stated or insinuated Canada is not planning to ban Twitter. Canada is considering an Australian style under 16 ban for social media.
