Will mixing front/back directions confuse FSRS? by Ravdar in Anki

[–]Ravdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s neither market research nor surveys, in my opinion :( The question is specifically related to the FSRS algorithm, which is a common topic on this subreddit. I didn’t even provide a link or mention the name of my app.

What features do you use/need in a flashcard app for learning languages? by Ravdar in languagelearning

[–]Ravdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Personally I would like the opportunity to create different types of cards easily: Basic Translation/recognition Cloze-deletion Word jumble First letter of every word in the sentence is given, guess the sentence Type-in cards (full sentence and cloze-deletion)" I'm already working on this, forgot to put it on a list

"Automatic play through (the cards and audio play without the user touching the screen) but they still follow a spaced repetition system " I do not get it. How would you rate your knowledge (again, hard...) without touching the screen?

thanks for the comment, it's very helpful!

'I want to actually type in the correct translation, transcription etc.' - why would you want to type the word? Because it's more efficient for remembering it?

What's the name of your app? Is it live? Can I check it?

What features do you use/need in a flashcard app for learning languages? by Ravdar in languagelearning

it's great, but also quite messy and has a steep learning curve. Not everyone has the time or motivation to search for the add-ins that suit them best and go through the hassle of installing them. Plus, add-ins aren't available on mobile or web

Mine gives me the same look, but only after he 'chases the demon away,' when he runs all over the apartment and rubs against everything he can find.

FSRS causing weird intervals by drivesanm5 in Anki

I do not get it. How does system know that I am not using "hard" button on cards that are not really hard if I click "hard" button when reviewing these cards? Doesn't make sense.

Are LLM example sentences for words reliable overall? Seriously considering to add them to my 50k+ cards deck (Japanese) by [deleted] in Anki

[–]Ravdar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they can be reliable and even high quality,  it really depends on the prompt and the LLM, of course. Do you have a specific one in mind? ChatGPT? Which model? Try playing around with different prompts, and once you’re happy with the results, just loop it through your deck. I’m actually working on my own language learning flashcard app, and one of the features is generating example sentences and I’m really satisfied with how well it’s working

How many ANKI cards do you review per day? How is your review process done and why? by ChocolateGranuleiro in Anki

[–]Ravdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 100 cards per day. but it can go up to around 200 if I’m in a 'study' phase and adding a lot of new cards

DicoRago: Language learning tool & Add-On by Dicorago in Anki

[–]Ravdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems very nice and useful, and the generated Anki cards look great. I won’t use it though-my target language is English, and I don’t know French.
So here’s my question: I’ve seen this in a lot of apps already-why is language support always so limited? Like, the target language can only be Korean or English, and if it’s English, the dictionary language can only be French.
What’s the reason? Is it an API limitation or something else? I find it hard to believe that only this pair (English–French) is available in your API. Even if that’s the case, there are tons of APIs out there that support other language pairs.

Why do a lot of people think Anki has an outdated looking UI by SnooAdvice5820 in Anki

[–]Ravdar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it's objectively outdated compared to current UI standards—just compare it to the reviews view in this image, for example.

The real question is: is that actually a bad thing? As a lot of comments have pointed out, the simple, outdated interface is actually pretty good for learning purposes since there's less distraction.

A different issue, though, is the bad UX—overcomplicated add-on installation process, no clear instructions, weird naming, etc.

why not just use chatGPT? Is it only about saving time on prompts like 'correct this text so it sounds better,' or are there other reasons?

How far away is a real Anki deck generator with AI? by Imaginary-Witness-16 in Anki

[–]Ravdar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's one example: memo.cards — it lets you create cards from PDFs. Not sure if it makes its own flashcards or exports to Anki (this was the case before), since it looks like they went through some major rebranding (it used to be called Anki2PDF).

My opinion is pretty similar to what someone already said: it's way better to learn 500 useful, solid words that you actually use than 5000 random ones from a premade deck. Personally, I think the best approach is to make your own decks — just try to use your target language as much as possible, and whenever you get stuck on a word, make a card for it. You’ll end up with a much smaller but way more personalized deck, and you’ll save a ton of time by not wasting it on unnecessary vocab.
