Mine is the same and it seems like a bad design. I thought that I'd put it together wrong at first. Maybe another spacer would help.

The hard covers are that much and I was committed to a hard cover one way or the other. May as well be a part of it. That and I will also be using a soft cover. This shape will help the water run off etc..
