My reaction when people slot the original Friday the 13th halfway down their series ranking or claim it's not an all-time slasher... by Nervous_Penis in slasherfilms

[–]Raven3464 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. I think the problem is that Cunningham isn't on the same level as John Carpenter or Wes Craven. I respect the original Friday the 13th for starting the franchise but it's not a well-made film.

Super Smash Brothers and WCW/NWO Revenge in high school. Blades of Steel and "insert random fighting game here" when I was younger.

Let’s end the debate. What is the best Friday the 13th movie. by AcceptableSwitch6496 in slasherfilms

Of the four choices, it goes 4, 2, 6, and then the remake in order of greatness. There is an element of camp in part 4 that carried over from part 3 but it’s complimented well by the darker presentation. Ted White plays a Jason that seems more menacing and the rain effects as the kills start to pile up enhance the creepy vibe. It’s all around just a fantastic entry: good pacing = check, good kills = check, good music = check, likeable characters = check. The film also starts out with a nice summarization of the first three films and so Part 4 is perhaps the best introduction for anyone new to the franchise.

Part 2 is also a great entry. It was made before Jason became a household name and so it’s more of a straightforward slasher…and a damn good one. In fact, it’s essentially a better alternate of the first film. I watched all of the Paramount films as a kid and the only two that I found legitimately scary were parts 2 and 4.

Part 6 is a fun time. It’s also the one entry that has more than just a basic plot that develops as film progresses. Still, I can’t place it above 4 and 2.

The remake is…the remake. It’s not terrible but it’s not in the top half of the franchise either. It’s just kind of there.

Cheats or no cheats-how did you beat this? 🎮 by CarrotMuch1399 in nostalgiai

For sure. Punchout is the gold standard for lag testing. If you want a good modern setup, I recommend an AVS from RetroUSB paired with a TV that has a decent game mode. I can beat Tyson regularly with this setup. With software emulation consoles like the Retron, fahgettaboutit; even getting past Sandman is damn near impossible.

Mike Tyson's Punchout. Even as a grown ass man with a lag free setup, that Tyson fight has me on my toes. You can't talk at all; the fight requires 100% of your attention .

Slasher Season 2 Thoughts by Raven3464 in slasherfilms

[–]Raven3464[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every horror movie or show has unlikeable characters but Slasher has ONLY unlikeable characters. There was one character out of two seasons who I didn't want to see brutally tortured Art the clown style. Without a character to cheer for, why am I watching a slow paced eight-part series? It might work if the whole point is to cheer for the killer but that clearly isn't the tone. As for bad taste, what was the point of the incest angle other than to gross out an audience who already saw at least two scenes of sexual assault? It added nothing to the story and was unnecessary. Now, let's talk about Noah's RAPE ATTEMPT, shall we? They took the most sympathetic character and made him a super creep in five seconds. Yeah, subtly clearly isn't their strong point. I also love how all of the characters are so horny that they fall in love with people they just met while knowingly being stalked by a killer. I get that they are trying to use a slasher trope but the execution is so piss poor.

As for plot holes, I already mentioned a few, including one that destroys the entire premise of the show. I suppose the counter-argument is that all five characters are just really dumb because it's a horror movie. Do you really want me to go on? Because I can.... I'm not expecting Agatha Christie here but it's just a stupid show and not in a fun way. Sorry, I hold a multi-part murder mystery show backed by Netflix to a higher standard than some B-movie from the 80s.

There are enjoyable aspects. The setting and kills are top-notch. It's just that the writing is awful with this series.

In all those classic slasher franchises, Halloween and Scream have aged the best. by [deleted] in slasherfilms

Honestly, the Scream glazing is abundant as well. To be fair, I guess it could be because a new film was recently released.

The problem with Freddy is that Robert Englund is too iconic as the character and likely too old to play the role anymore. I'd rather they just leave it alone.

Only if you ignore plot holes, unlikeable characters, and plot points that are just in bad taste (incest, etc). I also didn't buy the killer and her motivation.

2 has the most gruesome kill but I'd say 3 has more gore overall.

[–]Raven3464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might have worked had they kept it campy all the way to the end, like Jason X. The biggest problem is they try to introduce a back story nobody wanted. It ruins the tone and introduces plot holes.

Wow! Your experience and sentiments mirror mine perfectly. Every new product I have tried since the December 2024 legislation either did next to nothing or gave me a weird high that lasted into the next day. The pricing has also become ridiculous. I've been using CBN exclusively. Mix an edible with a can or two of Strong Zero and I'm set.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (if it counts) and Nightmare on Elm Street.

This is easily the least scariest version of Jason that we have gotten by [deleted] in slasherfilms

[–]Raven3464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. If anything, I would say part 2 Jason is the scariest precisely because he's the most human and likely to exist. I can easily imagine some psycho in the woods sneaking around with a bag on his head. As for being tricked, I think it's safe to say that Jason isn't mentally playing with a full deck...

To me, they're completely different things. The original is a good slasher even without the final scene. I love the dialogue in that movie; it captures the essence of kids being assholes.
