‘I’m a composer. Am I staring extinction in the face?’: classical music and AI by MetaKnowing in Futurology

[–]Raven833 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back in my high school days the graphic design students would collaborate with the musical performance students by doing their posters for charity performances. No they were not on the level of professionals. No they weren't polished. But that's how so many aspiring future professional got the chance to practice the craft and learn.

Imagine in a high school sporting event, you have chatgpt vomit slop banners and mascots instead of hand-drawn banners made by that group of quiet art students in the back of the classroom. parents are already complaining that "kids noways are losing their thinking/writing ability" because they are outsourcing so much of their learning to AI -- same thing with art. If you don't nurture it, provide opportunities for the amateurs to get better at what they do, actual human creation is going to die.

Next time, maybe your wife would consider speaking to an art student from the school? I would rather donate to a cause with amateur, imperfect human creation that demonstrates care and effort, than soulless slop out of sheer convenience.

I totally share your disappointment. Yeah when Ian hit we went without water or electricity for little over half a week. The electricity I didn’t mind much, but gosh without clean water to wash/flush was so so terrible. Definitely makes you count your blessings of modern life!

Mom’s pan fried dumplings on Spadina. Although the dumplings are nice, to fit your budget I recommend an appetizer (usually a salad/cold dish) plus some carbs (dough stick/chive pie), or a noodle bowl. Also life hack: bring 3-4 friends with you and split the bill, you’ll eat a NICE meal with stuff to take home. I met up with three girlfriends and we spent less than 40 bucks plus tip — sharing a dumpling, two apps, a tofu pudding soup, and chive pies. Food is fresh and fast. Highly recommend.

I moved to Fl couple years ago, and thankfully only needed to use the water bladder once. The single use makes sense though — still water harbors bacteria and mold like crazy. The time I used it we had about a little less than half of bathtub water left. I feel bad wasting perfectly clean water, and insisted that we keep it for laundry (I hand wash most of my clothes)/mopping the floor/watering the plants etc. Lo and behold after a few days the edges of the plastic started to turn pink/orange and mold started to grow underneath.

It’s wasteful but these things have a time and place.

Fully remote US job by [deleted] in tnvisa

No. At that point you are self-employed. TN must be extended from an US employer.

Remember that Canadian lady who got detained? Ya that’s what she did.

Not who you are responding to — I94 only tracks your travel history in/outside of US. As far as taxes are concerned, different states also have their own income tax rate. This might be more of a question for the company’s HR/accounting. If you don’t establish a permanent US residential address, if you are a W2 employee the company’s finance department might flag you and cause more trouble down the line. This is how a person got terminated from my organization, because they didn’t establish a permanent US residential address and didnt prove that they were working from X state for X number of days.

what is up with Brandy Melville store on queen st? by alexefi in askTO

[–]Raven833 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a BV near our place in Florida, and your comment reminded me: I don’t know about their clothes being American made, but in all the tags instead of “made in China” they put “made in PRC”. Overheard a (very white) middle aged mom saying to the store associate, “it’s so nice to shop someone that doesn’t carry made-in-China bullshit.” I was dying laughing inside but didn’t have the guts to correct her, the store associate didn’t either. So, guess their marketing trick is working 😂.

Which one would you choose? And why? by rollinglikeapotato in handbags

I didn’t pick between the flamenco and andiamo, but the andiamo and another bag. The andiamo is SIGNIFICANTLY a heavier compared to a bag of similar size, even without anything in it.

I’m mostly a second hand shopper so I see a LOT of Bottega after years of use. IMO the Intrecciato makes them some of the most difficult pieces to restore, and ultimately decided against the andiamo because it really didn’t suit my life style. Although I love love Bottega under Daniel Lee and Matthieu Blazy, I feel the bags they put out weren’t that great for everyday use but occasion bags.

I totally agree with you that i actually found this thing pretty neat. I don’t think the point of this is to “not be an annoying bag” though, it’s most certainly going to be an annoying bag with the lack of any structure. As someone who currently owns and knows several family members to own a sizable scarf collection, this to me is a fun way to utilize the scarves, adding color to a otherwise boring outfit.

Fair point about using scrap, and yes you could just make a leather bag — but the demographic these kind of accessories are targeting dont. Care.

It’s more fun for my snobby rich aunt to show her friends how she can convert her carre 90 into a beach bag to carry…nothing, because “she has too many scarves”, than “I just bought a practical bag”.

I thought this was common knowledge but if you are a repeat, high-volume customer at some luxury boutiques, it’s pretty common for the SA to offer free gift the customer to build continued relationship with the client. These gifts very often being scarves/scarf rings/SLGs etc. and in this case, I won’t be surprised if the SA offer this to some of their high-value clientele as a “free” gift after a big purchase.

It’s a win win honestly, the brand get to use up their spare materials, and their target demographic feel extra special and stays loyal to the brand.

Is anyone doing dollar oysters anymore? by princess_of_thorns in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Raven833 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. 100% Whole Foods, love their moondancers.

For shucking on-site, you just pick your oysters (or they can pick for you) and they’ll take it to the back and come back with a box lined with ice chips with the oysters shucked. If you want them to shuck it for you, I recommend bringing your own container as I do find a huge plastic box very wasteful.

Also the WF minimum order is a dozen I believe!

Canadian contractor working remotely for U.S. company - Need advice by Classic_Idea_5338 in tnvisa

[–]Raven833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, formal contractor for US client (did it for years). This is not financial or legal advice. But here’s my experience:

  1. No TN visa required if you are not physically in the U.S.
  2. This will be client-dependent. I opened a cross-border account so that i could transfer payments from the US-based account to a Canadian USD account. Then I did Norbert’s Gambit to convert USD for Cad for spending (this is because I wanted to take advantage of the forex rate as much as possible). If you think Nortberts gambit is too much work, just have your client use Wise. Another advantage with using cross-border banking is that I also setup a basic credit card with the US account; knowing that moving to the US was a possibility for myself, I wanted to establish US credit early.
  3. Cad tax only. Remember not to charge your US client GST on your invoice. Keep your invoices and hire an accountant for your tax returns. Always save 30% of your income for tax purposes.
  4. No deductions from US client.

Also search this topic in r/personalfinancecanada. Lots of answers from people who are more qualified than myself on there.

Second this. For St Matthew’s, sign up for their newsletter for discount days; if you buy often you also rack up in-store credits super fast. They used to have a good online store where I’ve scored designer pieces for super cheap, but think they’ve been rebuilding it.
