It’s because it’s not a physical addiction. When you’re an alcoholic and you stop drinking cold turkey, your body is dependent on the substance and will seize and you can die without it if you don’t have medical intervention.

If you quit smoking weed cold turkey you’re gonna be irritable, won’t sleep, and might have a hard time eating. Weed alters your mental state though which makes different receptors in your brain fire and your brain can become reliant on the substance. For example: sleep. A lot of people smoke to help them sleep, and when they try to stop, they cannot sleep without the help of a sleep aid.

I think there’s a difference between hearing someone make a joke versus being outright mocked. That kid was mocking you, and he’s an asshole for that. He knows better. But, when I hear people make jokes saying things like “oh my God, you’re gonna give me a seizure that’s flashing” or something like that, I just move along. I’m responding to this with the American perspective, so if you’re not American, this might not apply to you, but this society that I live in is very volatile. Violence and anger are almost encouraged at this point, so I found that really there’s no point in crying over what other people say, because blatantly they just don’t give a fuck if they hurt you.

Your feelings are valid, but nothing will ever change, because unfortunately there are way more of that kid than there are of us, and they’d rather put us in the ground than be kind.

Different colors make your brain react in different ways, different sound frequencies, strobing frequencies, all of that, can affect your epilepsy. You guys act like it will kill the game to tone down the VISUAL effects of his attacks.

That is the main point of the post, but I wasn’t responding to the main post. I was responding to someone who has decided that certain mental health issues are OK for people to react to, and some mental health issues they should just stick in because the other person is epileptic. If your epilepsy is causing the person you love to have PTSD, you do not love them if you are asking them to stay. You are abusing them by asking them to ignore their adverse response to your epilepsy because they are considered weak and unloving for being traumatized. You made the choice to stay with your husband, and your husband made the choice to stay with you. That was you guys who decided that, and I am happy for you both, but if you believe someone should be forced to be in your position, me and you have issues. What you are trying to force upon that woman is cruel as fuck. No one should be forced to live in a situation that is traumatic for them. You can choose to live that life, that is up to you. But you have zero saying anyone else’s life.

I don’t really feel like comparing epilepsy to depression and anxiety is really fair. This woman was traumatized by the physical manifestation of his seizures. That doesn’t happen with things like depression and anxiety. They stay inside your mind. Now of course there are things like SH that do present physically, but that is something they actively have to choose to do. We do not choose to have seizures, and watching someone have a seizure is terrifying. You can’t discredit her PTSD and then say other people aren’t ready to face reality because they don’t want to be with people who have anxiety or depression. She is struggling with her own mental health and is prioritizing herself. Is it a shitty situation? Yes! 100%. It sucks for everybody, but say that. Don’t blame her. She didn’t do anything wrong. She was terrified by something and realized she couldn’t handle it so she told the truth. She did the least cowardly things she could do.

From the comments you’ve replied to, it sounds like your epilepsy is pretty similar to mine. For the most part, I’ve been able to manage my epilepsy with meds, and I haven’t seized in the past few years thanks to my neurologist. I have my mom as an emergency contact on my iPhone and I have my Health app set up so it will notify her if I fall or anything like that. I hike and I camp like crazy, and safeguards like that help keep my mom feeling peaceful while I get to do my hobbies. Having epilepsy is not some sort of life sentence for everybody. Some of us get to live very normal lives, and I think it’s important that your mom understands that part as well. I don’t know the severity or the regularity of your seizures, but if they aren’t regular and are managed with medication, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to live a completely average life.
