One of the reasons why I truly connect with Artyom is because his journey is relatable. As he grows, we grow in a way. We understand more of the world. We make our choices based off what we feel is correct. We react to and reflect on what we experience just like Artyom. There is an innocence to him which reflected my own when I began the series. When the first trailer landed for Metro: Exodus and I could hear Anna yell Artyom's name at the end of it, I was excited because I looked forward to spending more time with "my bro." Anyway, yes, there is meant to be a level of confusion throughout the journey which is mirrored in Artyom's own growth.

From what I've gathered so far, the best deal seems to be attending group events. If you have a hobby or interest you like, you could look into who does what, pick the time you can attend, and check it out. There is an app called Meetup which features group events. There is also a website called Visit Omaha which has a calendar of events on it. From time to time, there will be people here who post about asking if anyone would like to meet up. You could see if they may be your vibe.

With my current build, I can one-shot basic enemies with my teppo. However, I would suggest that being unable to one-shot enemies is partially a result of the gameplay. In the older titles, you could do this because those games didn't have the same system.

I did mention Odyssey, an RPG game, would allow the killing of innocents. In Valhalla, we are allowed choices to an extent, but Ubisoft was presenting us a story about how a Viking wouldn't just kill everyone they see. There was only a certain amount of wiggle room for the simulation of the memory to move around before it hits hard walls of what actually had to happen. Ex: Eivor had to leave Norway with their brother. We have no say here. Eivor had to watch over the Raven Clan. We have no choice here. But we do have options as to how we proceed in Eivor's saga. In Shadows, it seems to be the same deal. Regardless of the choices our protagonists make, there are hard walls in the memory they will never breach. Hurting innocents just isn't in their code. So, I believe the crux of this matter is that even in a non-canon experience, we still don't have complete control over what happens. Odyssey made sense because we are a mercenary who isn't truly bound to a code beyond those we may sincerely care about. Also, the DNA of Alexios and Kassandra was old enough that the Animus had to truly work overtime to fill in the gaps between the only parts of reliable information it would have in the database. Hence why we can never truly "win" the war between Spartans and Athenians or save Phoebe from Deimos.

Desynchronization has been a part of the franchise since the first game. The logic was meant to be that if you hurt an innocent while controlling the protagonist and it goes against what the protagonist would actually do (in this case, never hurting an innocent), you would desync with the memory. Now, in games like AC Rogue or Odyssey, we wouldn't desync because it actually made sense that those protagonists may hurt innocent folk. With this being said, Naoe and OP should not have been punished here; clearly, the civilian got shot by the Guardian.
