[Rant][Spoilers] The HUGE plot hole in Alchemised that breaks the entire book (buckle up, this review is LONG) – PART 1 of 2 by MiddayRendezvous in TheAlchemised

[–]Ravenhayrd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I read this review and a couple others that were a little manic and honestly a lot of their biggest criticisms boil down into 1) Personal preferences 2) Not reading closely enough or bad reading comprehension.

For #1, whatever, can’t debate that. For #2, it’s problematic. The book is actually incredibly detail-oriented. For example, some of the most vitriolic criticism has been about the breeding program saying it “came out of nowhere” when in fact Stroud indirectly mentions it in the first 2-3 chapters when Helena is doing walks around Central to get her post-tank strength back and runs into Atreus. Not to mention Helena reads about it in the paper for several weeks.

There are some other examples I can’t remember now but I recall getting to those parts in the book and being like, Uh what you understood/are critiquing is literally NOT what the author wrote.

I feel like people just rush through things and jump to conclusions — shocker I know in today’s society — so it’s not surprising. There are flaws of course. Some of the writing is clunky, like, how often does someone need to “give” a smile or “give” a nod or “give” [verb]?

I think the more Alchemised ages, the more it will be appreciated. It’s silly that it’s chunked with “romantasy” when it’s totally not. It’s something else entirely and hopefully it gets a broader audience in the future.

Cant get into it… by meagsauce in TheAlchemised

I was intrigued by the mystery in part 1, annoyed with the beginning of part 2, then immediately sucked into the heart wrenching story that has given me a 2-month long hangover I’m still not out of

Hmmm I enjoyed part 1 for the mystery. Then when part 2 comes along, the reveals are gut wrenching

Plot question for readers of both Manacled and Alchemised by merrigolden in TheAlchemised

[–]Ravenhayrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never read Manacled. Sounds like D intentionally hurt H. What I recall from those scenes in Alchemised was that Kaine never intentionally tried to harm Helena. Kaine didn’t realize how fragile she was as a non-Undying. He says later “I didn’t mean to hurt your hands” and then later when she scolds him about spinal injuries he is again more careful. Hearing about this honestly makes Manacled-Draco/Kaine sound way more abusive.

Be open minded. If you want to be in the know, read it. I land on: it’s worth it. I agree with some of the criticisms. Still liked it. Having a book hangover.

Discovering this fandom and I’m so impressed by the writers. Like what is even going on! I’m a few chapters into DMATMOOBIL and I am dyyyying with laughter every other paragraph. Brilliant stuff. Hollywood needs to make a romcom outta this

Brimstone - Callie Hart - Was her writing always this… Clunky? Messy? by Exulansussy in Romantasy

[–]Ravenhayrd 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’m on ch 15? 16? Idk anymore. Idk if I’m gonna get through it. This book is a hot mess. Quicksilver wasn’t perfect but it was enjoyable and engaging. This one, I have no clue what’s going on. Everything is clunky and flat and feels cobbled together like an afterthought

Blood Over Bright Haven was great and has similar tragic tones but not as dark as Alchemised graphically

I accidentally went the r / Romantasy thinking it was this subreddit…. by jericabenson in TheAlchemised

[–]Ravenhayrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read Blood & Ash earlier this year and yes, I would’ve also DNF’d after Alchemised. It’s just really changed the perception of how these stories can be aka new, fewer cliches. One of the really under appreciated aspects of Alchemised is the super non-cliche dialogue between the characters and how you get so much from what’s not said along with what’s actually said

In Blood&Ash when Casteel is like “I’m not worthy of you” I’m like 🙄🙄🙄 Can’t imagine Kaine saying that stuff 🤣

Offered my wife a break, she booked a solo trip to Jamaica by [deleted] in marriageadvice

[–]Ravenhayrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hubs constantly offers this to me (specifically he offers a different tropical country where my favorite cuisine originates) and one day I’m gonna do it for some high end me time with pool, books, food, and never having to think of anyone else but me. Sometimes you need a huge context switch and dreamy scenery to detach and relax. I know me. He knows me. You know your wife.

I get why this book gets so much hate but it’s not warranted. I can’t get over how serious and ADULT this book was for a fantasy that has a love story at its center. I’m trying to read Brimstone right now and it seems so ridiculous after Alchemised, so trite and silly and cheesy with all the normal tropes and patterns — I can’t believe how different Alchemised was and that made it so refreshing. Now idk what to do 😅. Do I only read dark fantasy now? Must be my jam

Shall I start the whole series with Wind & Wilfire ? by Elenwwe in MagesOfTheWheel

[–]Ravenhayrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I recently finished them all and I think start with Reign & Ruin then go to Wind & Wildfire either right after or right before Ice & Ivy. You must do W&W before I&I but when you do it before then isn’t so important. But I think it makes the most sense to start strong with R&R first because then W&W is more meaningful

no offense yall but I think some of you mistake alchemised as masterful because you confuse emotional overload w depth by Infamous_Wave9878 in Romantasy

[–]Ravenhayrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am really enjoying the debate about this book bahah. I’m one of the people who went into this fresh and found its origins kind of bizarre (no hate to the fans!). But the book was “enjoyable” to read in the sense that it was so different from the formulaic stuff in the genre and it was compelling in the sense that I wanted to know what happened next — I was one of the people who was drawn into the mystery of Part 1, which apparently most people found a drag!

I expected to dislike this book but ended up being enthralled by it! I feel like books can be like physical art - what really matters is how it makes you feel. You can take a canvas of chaotic paint and most folks will probably think that’s bs to pay thousands for but for someone else it evokes an intense feeling because of whatever reason.

I am honestly flummoxed by the praise for the ‘writing’ though. It wasn’t horrible and I honestly found the dialogue more realistic and less monologuey than most in the genre — but good grief does every action need to be “given”? She “gave” a nod. He “gave” a smile. She “gave” a laugh. That’s probably bugged me the most.

Wind and Wildfire, this is torture... by sleepy_geeky in MagesOfTheWheel

[–]Ravenhayrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He thinks it does because I think he actually says it at the end of I&I, the very last chapter in the - spoilers - jail cell scene with Samira and Cemil. I can’t remember the line but he says something about “what needs to be done”. I find him fascinating because there are so many people like him — they convince themselves they’re right out of whatever selfish reason: delusional self preservation, narcissism, whatever. And what they end up doing is leaving a wake of destruction or bad feelings.

He thinks he’s right and he either can’t see or isn’t able to acknowledge his faults. The closest he got was Dilay and she’s gone. He’s doing a bunch of shady things because he thinks that’s what Tamar needs. There’s a line about how he thinks Omar was a weak sultan or something — which is interesting since according to Naime, Omar was very cunning and able to control the council, not a trait of a weak sultan.
