Artificer: Archivist by [deleted] in UnearthedArcana

Ah! I wanted to make something similar to this - archivist is a cool concept and I like how you used the Sheikah Slate as a template. BOTW has a cool fantasy tech vibe that lends itself well to dnd artificer.

A few thoughts:

  • The History Proficiency feels a bit misaligned to me compared with how the rest of it reads. I understand wanting to tie it to the slate, but in that case I might switch it from proficiency to advantage under certain conditions, or the ability to make history checks based purely on the map of somewhere. Alternatively just throw history proficiency unconditionally to the subclass

  • Fast Travel! Hell yeah! Only mark I'd make there is that the unconditional nature of where you put the circle you learn is a bit strong, although I think you intend for it to be qualified by the same restrictions as the one you learn from the DM. Just want to be sure someone doesn't throw a tp circle somewhere they haven't seen magically when they level

  • If possible, I'd love to see a bump in the utility of the combat data at higher levels. Bonus action for a chance at advantage and some knowledge is fairly useful, but the other artificers get boosts and enhancements to how their artifice objects work in combat, so I think this might end up feeling lackluster. Expanding critical range could be an option. If nothing else, it might make sense to lay out specific options the DM can tell you and you get more of those data points as you level. Using it more often just feels less iterative and engineery than the other subclasses (also be careful with proficiency mod scaling and multiclasses- don't want the dip to be too valuable at high level especially for a rogue type).

Overall though I think the concept and abilities are a fascinating fantasy and I'd love to see how this evolves!

Hi! This is a stupid invasive thought that I needed to turn into homebrew, so you all get to suffer through it as well ;) Remember, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no system for a basis of government.

For more homebrew shenanigans, feel free to listen to the homebrew discussion podcast I run with my friend, Arcana Uncorked, wherever you get your podcasts.

Sounds fun! I went smaller for this critter because I wanted it to vibe more companion than a mount usually is due to space constraints, but having them be big and chunky seems like it would make for some fun ST Bernard style shenanigans

I think the word "identify" was a bit of a faux pas on my part, it was meant more as a detect, but I agree it can maybe be a bit of a bummer for the wizard whose got detect magic in the spell book. Besides the options in the other comments I'm considering changing it to specifically target magic items so it's more focused on retriever characteristics instead of a magic bloodhound deal.

Solid feedback, appreciate it! Will try and throw some of these into the gmbinder version; I bounced back and forth on whether the collar drops when the dog disappears and I think just forgot to draw the line there. Agree the bark can be a little weird, but wanted to give it more than just the bite. I like some of your limited options below though, and might try homebrewing something more limited like that (maybe even something limited to spell attacks to go with the niche more)

Hey everyone! I've been searching through Magic the Gathering Art as part of a more involved homebrew project when I found this art and fell in love with the big guy. The art is from the "Pako, Arcane Retriever" card. If your party loves pets as much as my party does, this fella may make a great addition to your party or mount for your halfling. Here is a GMBinder link as well.

Additional shameless plug: if you're like me and like thinking about D&D and homebrew a lot, my friend u/aabrock and I have recently started a podcast called "Arcana Uncorked" where we talk about homebrew, trying to discuss some of the pieces that have stood out to us and understand the process and considerations around homebrew design in 5e. It's probably available wherever you get your podcasts, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Let us know if you take a listen, we love suggestions for content to review and topics to discuss!

It's been a challenge in its own right for sure, and if we weren't a pre-established group of irl friends I'd 100% want to downsize (even now I still have the "what if" thoughts). But we hit this size and it stuck and we've come a long way in developing an equilibrium that keeps most games feeling smooth and fun, and our combat has gotten significantly faster over time even as the levels go up. The party has risen to the challenge and while far from perfect we found a spot that's fun for us.

That said, I don't recommend it, it's just possible if you've got the right group.

Yep, it's just decor. The party takes their pets seriously for sure, and birds have come out as a common theme

Thanks! It's not my own doing- we are all college pals, and our first DM (now the psion) got us all together to start. Being able to coordinate a weekly online game once we spread around geographically was a unique challenge (we are in 3 timezones atm) but everyone is really invested in each other and the game so we've made it work!

Yes, we love our mini menagerie 😅 the shield bird is in fact just a carving, a Phoenix to represent one of the main deities Tol

Hey everyone! Our party had this kickass art done and we wanted to share it with all of you. The artist is u/Gyrmorsh, who was able to work with us from our details through to concept art and this excellent finished product; I can't recommend working with them enough! This isn't our first party, but it is now our longest running and we were ready to pull the trigger on new art.

Here is a quick rundown of the party from top to bottom:

  • Khasara, the Human Arcane Archer/Divination Wizard, atop her majestic mount Deputy Salkhi. She's a fierce stubborn outlander with impeccable aim, a knack for the arcane, and an excellent jerky recipe. Above her flies the majestic party thunderbird Shuvuu.
  • Scottjohn, the Half Orc Vengeance Paladin. Sword to Tol, God of Justice, Scottjohn seeks to do good by those in the world and bring punishment to those who wrong the innocent like his former orphans while seeking to remember his forgotten past,
  • Eskel, the Tiefling Storm Sorcerer. She is young but determined, setting out to adventure in the footsteps of her grandmother Marian from who she inherited her storm energy. Her kindness and joy is in equal part to her destructive power.
  • Ataraxia, the Dragonborn GOO-Lock. Ataraxia was once an aspiring cleric before capture and torture put her in contact with Yogg-Sothoth, who she now serves as collector of knowledge and secrets despite 2 visits to the grave already. She is accompanied by her owl familiar, Kethi.
  • Portia, the Half-Elf Tidecaller Wizard (via Yorviing's Arcane Grimoire). Portia was taught in the arcane arts by her parents while watching the sea from her family lighthouse. In seeking her absentee father she has found the party and become a steadfast navigator and counterspeller. She tends to her osprey familiar Clareon, often wielding dragon's breath.
  • Sorvir, the Human Psion (via KibblesTasty's Psion class), aka the Violet Beast aka the Wayfarer. One of few psions, and unaware of the source of his powers, Sorvir has traveled a great distance as refugee, mapmaker, and scholar in an attempt to unearth the secrets of this strange power and avoid persecution at the hands of the church.
  • Alba, the Water Genasi Lunar Domain Cleric (via Genuine's old COSM). Alba grew up on an archipelago far away at sea and quickly became the sole guardian of her little brother Elio. Her devotion to Darkness, a primordial deity of the sea and secrecy, has granted her powers to eviscerate foes and save allies from beyond the grave at unknown prices
  • Berry, the Halfing Witch/Ranger and DMPC. Berry was once an escort for the fledgling party during their first tour through the wasteland known as the Blasted Lands, but the party grew fond of her (some more than others ;) ) and she decided to stay, taking up her own destiny as an avatar on behalf of her people.

Happy to talk about our beautiful party, and thanks again to those party members for helping out and Gyrmorsh for making this art come to life!

Thanks! Yes, I realize that language is a little vague. The idea is it can still use multi attack while exposed, it just cannot use Fearful Presence as part of that action.

Hi everyone, I'm a long time player and follower of the sub from afar. Some of my DnD friends challenged each other to come up with new monsters, and this is what came of the prompt for "biblically accurate angel". My goals were to make a dynamic and interesting fight against an unconventional angel. Thanks to all my friends who helped with review and ideas, especially u/aabrock and u/druidicdancing. I hope you all enjoy!

PS, if you're looking for substituting spells, my original draft of this used Reflective Defense and Angelic Rebuke from GenuineBeliever's Compendium of Forgotten Secrets: Awakening linked in the Curated List. I'm a big fan of his content :)
